There absolutely nothing about Clearys game that excites. Lacks height and size. Not quick. Not great defensively. Ok skills.

Cleary has looked good at afl level every time he’s played . Played he’s role and defended well , not every player has to have flair speed and height. Look at Dylan grimes he just carved out a great career and is pretty much exactly the same height as Cleary and played very similar.

Bloke just needs to be given some continuity.

Dylan Grimes was one of the best key defenders in the game.

Besides them both having two arms and two legs, there’s almost nothing similar between Grimes and Cleary.

I think a player who gets to the right spots and can use the ball well can carve out a career.
He does have good poise and his kicking is better than average.

You can't have stars in every position. Right now I have him ahead of Gags in defence simply because Cleary didn't turn the ball over 2 out of 3 kicks.

I thought Cleary was really impressive in the practise game. Was rock solid in defense, composed, used the ball well. Deserves to play firsts after that. IMO.

Zaine Cordy, Jordan Roughead and Fletcher Roberts are all premiership players, and I'd argue none had a truly elite trait (just various things they were quite good at). I think Cleary can still be a productive member of our side with his "decent at everything, bad at nothing" profile

The three examples you’ve given are all blokes that had one elite trait for a footballer… big enough to be ruckmen/KPP. Would Fletcher Robert’s be a premiership player if he were the size of a half back? Cleary is just an average sized footballer that is average at everything. It’s not a crime, it is what it is.

Cordy and Roberts are like 3-4cm taller than Cleary - I really don't feel that makes that much a difference.

Cleary has very clean disposal. That's something alone that can earn a place in the side when most other traits are average, especially when we bemoan our players' foot skills a lot.
