Great to see Sam Reid been given a game. You always know you have a great player when they come from the Sunshine Coast. Interesting to see how he goes and if he grabs his chance with both hands.

Are there any possible late changes? The emergencies are all smallish type players, so is Gilbee a definate starter for Saturday night?

Rocket must have concerns on Tommy's form if he hasn't brought him in for this match. I was half expecting him to be brought in to line up on Buddy.

When asked about him in his post match conference last week he said anyone who saw Tom play at Willy the day prior would have realised he wasn't ready to step up to AFL level again, and that he needed to get confidence in his body more than anything.

Williams will be back, but leaving him to get some confidence in his body and touch for a couple of weeks is a good thing.

Great to see form being rewarded at VFL level. We could have gone for an Addison or a Callan but obviously they see Reid's form as warranting selection.
On another topic i dont see why we are all so concerned about Franklin and Roughhead? They should be the ones concerned as their defenders have been sloppy, slow, error riddled and with our speedy, crisp forward line i think this match has 'cricket score' written all over it. Midfield is the key in this match and on form alone we must be the strong favourite.

Too right - no one played well last time we took on the Hawks. But Welsh dropped off towards the end of year, which is probably why he didn't come into the side until about round 7 this year.

However last week he played more of a quarter back role in the second half, floating across and cutting off forward entries. Hard to see him single handedly stopping Buddy - that job will probably go to Morris.

We all remember franklin and roughhead destroying us in september, the reason being the supply to them was overwhelming that night
hawthorn spanked us in the middle...if the balls not down there end as much guess what happens?

Our mid's on paper do look the part over the hawks
from memory dogs are top 4 in clearances, hawks bottom 4:thumbsu:

Our defence looks a little thin on paper in terms of size and depth, but as with the last couple of games we will roll the dice and hope our midfield can get on top.

Thats what I was thinking as well. Geez I hope Williams is fit and firing come September. We really need his type at the moment. Okay, I take posters comments onboard that he is not in great form at the moment and needs a few weeks at Williamstown to get his confidence back, but fingers crossed he can hit the ground running before the finals.

Gotta love Welsh. BOG in my opinion last week followed by Gia. But 4 this match, we need Welsh up forward. Good luck 2 Reid in his 2nd game. 1st game in his debut againt Adelaide in rnd 22 last yr wasnt crash hot. Hopefully he'll come out starring tomoz night.

As for the matchups, Lake on Roughead and Morris on Buddy. Hawks are going downhill this yr. Last time we played them was in the finals and i went to the game and saw us get belted. This time, they'll be terrified of us. We're the favourites!

GO DOGS!

Morris will get killed by Franklin, just like he did in the QF last year, Lake was moved onto him later and beat him, so I'm thinking Lake ----> Franklin and Morris ----> Roughead.

I would be worried with Morris on Roughhead. Roughhead is a big strong boy. I am not sure that Morris would have the size and strength to beat him. Maybe I am underestimating Morris. Besides, we don't have an abundance of choices apart from Lake.

Roughhead is playing better footy than Buddy and is more of a traditional forward so Lake would be the perfect matchup. I'd like to see hargrave have a crack at Buddy. Has more height than Morris and will be able to keep up, and hurt him the other Way, no doubt we'll have someone drop back when the hawks have the ball so he'll have help.

Lake on Roughead is as sure a bet as you are going to get. The connundrum with Buddy boy is either directly being opposed by Morris, with Shaggy or Murphy or Welsh (or all 3 if they rotate through the back half) given implicit instructions to sacrifice a little attack to ensure a 3rd man is always on hand for contested ball involving Franklin. Otherwise, sans Williams, Shaggy gets the gig, with the same instructions to the others re 3rd man. The LAST thing we need is to be the team that allows Buddy to play himself into some form, and we all know that can occur in 5 minutes of footy.

hooroo....
