Dunstall is an aloof chap though...not rude, just doesn't relate to people he doesn't know. Derm loves everyone.

This is a perfect example of public perception. You're spot on, Dermie is a great bloke, has time for everyone. Dunstall is an entirely different person to Dermie, and yet the two were devastating together as players, and work together well in the media. Dunstall once said he likes Dermie but they don't socialise as they are two completely different people. Being different and not socialising doesn't mean you hate someone.

I recall the first time I met the two of them. You'd see Brereton the flamboyant, controversial character and suspect he was slightly up himself. Then you'd see Dunstall the no-nonsense all business player who just got the job done with no bells or whistles. The two men I met were almost the complete opposite of what I expected. Dunstall was rowdy, dominating the conversation with locker room humour, whereas Brereton was just a lovely guy, so easy to talk to. It was a real eye-opener to me that things are not always what they seem from the other side of the fence.

I can sort of see both sides. Everything you and others say is true of course, but I feel like the comparison to local level teams would apply more to players that played together for several years.

It's one thing to cross paths and have friction with a teammate for 2-3 years, but invariably you'd go your separate ways soon enough. Matthews and Scott probably lined up in the same team close to 250 times, including three premiership teams. Of course it doesn't really matter that much, but you'd assume that players at our local clubs who have played together for that length of time and had that sort of success would get along pretty well, even if they weren't best mates. And it's notable when they don't, either due to a falling out or they've just never seen eye to eye.

It is funny how Derm is perceived. All I have ever heard from people (& 1 very close to that group of ex Hawthorn players) who have met him have said what a ripping guy he is. Genuinely has the time for anyone. Yeah he is confident in himself but he isn't a d*ck. Just a fun friendly bloke.

Dunstall is just not a people's person. He can come across as rude. Just doesn't have time for alot of people basically. Total opposite to Derm in that regard. Brilliant footy mind though & probably one of the more intelligent ex-footballers going around.

I can’t remember if it was him or Brodie Moles, but one of them tried to sell gear to Brad Johnson one mad Monday. Of all people to try and sell it to.

I’d heard it that a young player told Johnson that O’Keefe had tried to sell to him, Johnson grabbed O’Keefe by the throat and told him what we he thought about it.

Reimers is one of the least endearing players going around. I remember pre draft as a junior one of his coaches from Bunbury had to go and drag him off the couch and get him dressed to go for a state trial, or some sort of pathway selection session. He was either to arrogant or too stupid to motivate himself to get there.

I do, but it’s a private matter.

Kyle didn’t leave Essendon with many friends at all.

My favourite story was when he was sacked (but then reinstated almost immediately) after threatening to fight Adrian Hickmott because he gave him a spray.

Nah, that incident was in China and with a female EA who travelled with the club IIRC.

These two (Jasper and Dom) punched on at training on more than one occasion and generally didn’t like each other.

He spent his time knicking packets of chips n soft drink from behind the bar

Came to work in purple velvet suit even tho he was meant to be doing footy clinics at local schools.

Also spent time on the track lining up junior players trying to make the reserves team thinking he was tough.

very well ( ex Roo also ) when he was in Geelong, & he told me that one day Cameron Ling was following Thurley into the club & saw him brush off two kids trying to get autographs, once inside Lingy apparently gave him an absolute verbal barrage saying something along the lines of “never again do you ignore our supporters like that”....Apparently Thurley was so taken aback he felt the need to go back outside & see the kids to say sorry and sign the autographs.

Doesn't surprise me re: Thurley, given he came from Clarence originally. A whole club that basically thought their s*** didn't stink and reeked of arrogance.
He actually had a terrible fall down a flight of stairs at a Hobart nightspot some years ago, hit his head and was put in an induced coma for a period there, and retired from footy after that.

Don't surprise me, as players they had very different mindsets. Chappy would always make the right percentage play. He wouldn't have enjoyed Stevie's "creative" kicks and no-look handballs etc.

is the only ex-teammate (from Geelong at least) that he stays in close contact with. Haven't read it for a while, but I think he talks about the Steve Johnson 'feud' being overblown: just two very different personalities clashing from time to time. Not hard to see how that would have manifested itself: the underachieving Cats of the mid-2000s practically driving Chapman insane, while Johnson was running amok off the field and throwing his potential down the drain.

Credit to Johnson, he made an extraordinary turnaround with his career hanging in the balance, following his club imposed suspension to start 2007, but early impressions last with this sort of stuff and I'm sure the famously blunt Chapman would have struggled to bite his tongue when Johnson would have one of his regular careless brain fades even after Johnson had become a bona fide star.
