I worked with a guy called Taryn and went to high school with a girl called Taryn?? (Spelt the same way)

I am glad for my over-used over-popular name. It always gets shortened, but at least it is never misspelled or misinterpreted!

On a slightly related note, Taryn seems to be a fairly popular, boganish girls name. Don't think I have ever seen a Taryn who wasn't hot, though.

My Wellingham name would have been either Mob or Bay. I could probably handle being called Bay. Maybe.

I do like how Billie Joe Armstrong gave his son the middle name Danger. So cool to be able to truthfully say "Danger is my middle name."

An old mate of mine whose surname was Kelly married a girl called Kelly...

Is he lucky enough to be married to this?

At work there was a girl named Bubble. I actually couldn't believe it.
Bullshit. Was it her given name at birth, or did she change it? Or do you not care enough to find out? :p

Swear to god man, I actually thought it was a joke. She was in her teens and their family seemed pretty damn smacked out so it wouldn't suprise me if she was given it. I was putting stock on layby for her and I asked for her name and she replied with "Bubble.". I told her we cannot accept nic names or anything like that and we needed her real full name, and it was bloody Bubble.
You don't happen to work at Monsoon PR do you?
nahh man just a shit kicker in a department store, something to pay the bills while im at uni.

Has to be a new thread leader. That's ****ed up. Surely you could never actually call her Bubble to her face, instead just talk in her general direction, haha.

There was no way in hell that I was calling her by her real name, I just cannot wait until one of the old part time bats in layby have to get it for her when she finishes the payments, the look on their face will be priceless.

I've come across that too  That would obviously be pronounced something like Shuller. Just spell it Skyla, Skyler, Skyelar even, but not Schuyler!

Isn't that a Dutch name? I'd rather people spelt it correctly than phonetically.
Like Neve - it's actually supposed to be spelt Niamh (those crazy Irish!).

I disagree - phonetics is better for everyone. There isn't really "correct" English spellings for names or words in other languages, especially those which don't share the same script. So you might as well make it easy for people to pronounce rather than make up some "correct" spelling that makes no sense to your average reader

As a teacher I come across lots of weird names, but the strangest at the moment is Cashew Contractor.

Contractor is such a weird surname, I'd love to know how it came about. The kid is south asian so maybe his folks changed their surname when they came here?

Heard another good one on the radio today driving home from work, some woman named her daughter "Kaysea" instead of Casey because she likes the ocean. U WOT M8?

I believe that it dates back to when India was ruled by Britain. Another occupational surname that you can find in India is Engineer.

I have a boss who's married to a lady named Chelsea. I'd asked her once how she felt about that and she replied she would never call a child after a place you would live. Then to my surprise they named their first born ( female ) Sydney. Correct if i'm wrong but thought Syd or Sydney was a mans name anyway.

I think it was originally, but it's become a fairly common name for girls.
