Couldn’t agree more with your post, but I got a chuckle from the bolded comment. There’s never been a player as aerially adept as Howe and probably never will again. I reckon he’s got Howe covered for reach as well which is more important than height, IMO.

It also kind of ignores the fact that we won the flag this year with:

  • Howe missing for half the season
  • Howe being more "grounded" than he has been his entire career

Oh calm the f**k down you massive baby. Christ.

It's no secret that Hine seems to almost never recruit key position players and it would be nice to actually see us pick one up here and there.

It's not about not wanting TJ. But our key position stocks are in a werid spot.

Moore is 27
McStay is 27
Murphy is one concussion away from forced retirement and is undersized anyway
Dean has literally been injured since he walked in the door and has played 2 VFL games in 2 years
Kreuger can't seem to get into the side
Cox probably has one year left realistically
Mihocek is undersized and is also probably a year away from retirement

It's not a stretch to argue we should be looking at bringing in some young key position players for succession planning

27 is young for a KPP. They've still got another 6-7 years at least.

No point carrying average developing talls if they're not good enough to displace current best 23 KPPs. You'll just get another Kelly situation of carrying a list clogger for 5+ years.

If we need KPP depth in our current window, we should be targeting mature talent through trade/FA, like what we did with Frampton.

Hine. The dude that gave us the mighty short people like Ben Kennedy, Tim Broomhead, Cooper Murley.
I don’t believe a single player drafted in 2022 played a senior game?…. Correction, Ryan lasted 10 minutes before Rayner snuffed his lights out.
Thats a terrible take on player development. We won the flag so naturally we weren't blooding kids this year too often. No point playing them if they aren't ready

I’m not overly excited by this.
Sorry.
Would’ve preferred a solid key defender like Ollie Murphy.
Nathan Murphy is punchdrunk, Howe is long in the tooth, Dean’s body is made of glass, Frampton is a spud and if Moore gets injured we are screwed.
Wow - if the you think the kid would be our savior under this scenario then he should have been Pick 1.

Correct.

correct. And what happens this year will bear no resemblance to what will happen in the future. I don’t think a 190 cm guy (tops 80 kg) is going to be the centre piece of your future defence. It’s also unlikely Charlie Dean and/or Billie Frampton are likely to be your future, either.
So which player did we overlook that would have been the “centre piece of our future”?.

Just learned he was Hawks NGA but they couldn't match as pre- pick 40.

To be honest - if you didn't;t pick him Essendon would have and we hate them way more than you so it doesn't worry us.
also his brother is the better player and we still have him

I'm pretty confident that we'll take one or two as SSP.

I haven't scrolled through the rest of the thread to see if anyone responded to you Sco, but two players can train per spot.

Dekka said they'll take two spots for SSP, allowing four players to train. Call on Kelly will be made after tomorrow but I haven't heard outside of this board that Eyre is actually confirmed to be training with us.

On SM-S916B using BigFooty.com mobile app

There was an article stating that Eyre might train with us. With Kelly, my assumption is that he'll be looking elsewhere for train on opportunities, but may train with us if no one else is interested.

exactly

we are one serious head knock away from losing Murphy for good
Dean is totally unproven, missed almost 2 years of football now?
Krueger has a history of injury as well
we going to play Begg as a key back? unproven in that position but i hope he can

then , age factors with our senior key postion players is a concern over the next year or two
only thing that may happen is free agency and us targeting a big gun, but who would be available

investing in a key forward or back once and a while would be nice
hopefully we can rookie someone like Weckert today

but i doubt it

Maybe 10-12 of all the kids drafted will play a decent amount of games. Jiath ain’t gonna be one of them. He’s built like a tooth-pick and only came good in the last month. He’s smaller than Pendlebury. A decent key player over 200 cm is worth their weight in gold. Particularly when Howe and (probably) Nathan Murphy are finished.

Geeze way to go to the dark side. I am forming a picture of you

We play a defensive system that doesn't necessarily rely on height. It prefers players of mid size that are elite at intercepting. No point picking a junk KPD between pick 20-40 for no reason. Far better off going best available such as HD and TJ.

I won't speak for the club but they draft what they see as the best available talent at that pick, within the context of the team's needs.

If a Moore was available at 37 this year, they would have taken him. Tew was seen to be the best defender available at that pick, I back them. You disagree and that's cool too.

Gone Critical will vow that 10-12cm growth spurts are a common occurence. Tew might still break the 200cm barrier!
True….
Very true…
