We couldn't have been expected to rebuild a list overnight. And as it was, we had a horror run with our young recruits. Think of all the kids who have had long term injuries ...

- Ramsay has missed the best part of two seasons. (One with a wrist, one with shins)

- Freeman has missed the best part of two seasons with soft tissue injuries.

- Broomhead has had (at least) two LTI's - glandular fever and a shoulder injury

- Scharenberg has had two LTI's - a foot problem (which he was recruited with) and an ACL.

- Both Witts and Grundy missed a fair amount of time with stress fractures to their back.

- Frost missed most of his first season with an MCL

- Kennedy has had awful problems with his shins and missed a lot of footy / training

- Marsh had a horror hamstring

Imagine if all those players had enjoyed good fitness in the way players like Langdon and DeGoey have? We would have gotten a lot more development out of those players.

I don't buy it as bad luck, it might not be Buckley's fault(and I don't think it is) but the buck has to stop somewhere. Missing finals next year is a failure, the degree of which would of course depend on the season itself. Do you really think that if we finished say 10th and for whatever reason we could have Clarkson as our coach the following year that Buckley would still be the better choice?

My point is that if there's someone obviously better available we should go with them, if not I'd give Buckley one more chance.

Me neither.

The objective is to have a program that brings future Premiership success.

How often does buying a successful coach in buy future Premiership success? Of course we did it (eventually) with Malthouse. There are a few other examples, but it is rare.

Sure, but I don't think we should chop and change trying to chase success either ... in the way Richmond did hopelessly for many years.

Perhaps, I think that if someone with vast experience and success is floating around fresh out of the game we'd be crazy not to chase them. Best case scenario either way is that we do make finals and this conversation is moot :p

That's what Carlton said about Malthouse :p And Pagan :p

Indeed!

Buckley is starting to build a very nice list of talented young footballers, new contract on offer for Buckley very soon I think!

derek is building the list.... I don't think we should attribute things to buckley that he has no control over.... btw bucks will need to keep the injuries to a minimum next year so he can get the best out of the troops..

That must be where Buckley is going wrong, causing all these injuries over the past 2-3 years

Football is a results based business. Any movement to extend Nathan's contract over the summer has been shelved.

Finals or bust for Nathan in 2016. You can't have 5 years of successive regression and keep your job.

Damo said on The Footy Show that Buckley won't be offered an extension over the preseason. Board won't make a decision until after season 2016.

Oh well....damo says it....must be true.
Did you hear Leigh Matthews say that Hawthorn offered him the job after Clarko's first three years??....wonder where Clarko would be now if that had happenned?

He didn't sign because of Bucks he did it for the dollars.

amidoinitright?
No you must give bucks a bigger serve
He can never ever do anything right

If only he could acquire 10% of genius floating in these parts he would be fine

these things are fine lines
Fortunately the club is not mass panic merchants

Not enough appreciation for the deliberate, delicious irony of this post.

Matthews would probably have 7 premierships as a coach by now if that had happened. It's amazing how coaching can be a matter of right place at the right time. Often successful coaches are beneficiaries of the work put in to building a list and getting experience in to it that their predecessors have done. The Hawks and Geelong proved that persistence pays off long term with both Clarkson and Thompson.

I'm sick today, I blame Bucks.

Another year and we have someone who we pinned a large part of our rebuild wants out. Everything isn't rosy at the club.
