The Swans have been extremely pleased with their top two draft picks, Matthew Ling and Tom McCartin, who have both showed exactly why they were targeted by recruiting boss Kinnear Beatson. McCartin has an exceptional pair of hands and has impressed the coaches with his aggression at the ball and his bodywork for such a young player. Ling's speed and ability to break the lines off half-back has shone out, as has his disposal, both qualities the Swans went after at the draft. Riley Stoddart and rookie Angus Styles are in the same boat as Ling, with all three runners adding pace to the squad. Athletic big man Joel Amartey has done some exciting things on the track, highlighted by his agility and prodigious leap, while fellow rookies James Bell and Jake Brown have slotted in well after coming through the Swans academy system.

The standout: They don't grow on trees, so as an athletic key forward with some physical presence, Tom McCartin looks an exciting prospect. - Adam Curley

So reading between the lines

Ling - Looking really good
McCartin - Hard at it, can't find the ball
Stoddart - Looking promising but can't tell for sure yet
Styles - Better than expected
Amartey - Has no skills involving the actual ball
Bell and Brown - Friendly guys, everyone likes them, but they won't be around in a year.

The club isn't going to make a definitive judgement on kids they drafted 8 weeks ago. It is probably as much for them as it for supporters, to say the things that they have.
Theyre not really gonna come out and say this kid isnt as good as we thought hed be.. either way im probably being a tad critical, as long as they are healthy and really putting in right now is as much as we can ask of any of them at this point

Why would they say a kid is not good enough , after deeming them good enough 8 weeks ago?
They've just had a small part of pre-season and no games. Kids who train the house down might not replicate it in games, kids who don't train the house down might set the house on fire in a game scenario.

It must be so sad to be such a cynic.

Meh, plenty more when that came from. He's pretty much 100% right in this case. Far more draftees fail than succeed.

I have always thought we did pretty well. Sure we have some draft failures, but our rookie draft more than makes up for it. The AFL Prospectus 2018 made the following comments on our drafting, rookies and development plan:

'In the last two years they (Sydney) have uncovered eight AFL-calibre players despite finishing in the top-four in each year between 2012 and 2016. They haven't had access to high picks in the draft. They AFL system is designed so they shouldn't be able to do this.

Tom Papley, Nic Newman, and Lewis Melican are typical Sydney rookies. Aliir Aliir has shown promise and George Hewitt was a late pick who hasn't missed a game since debuting. They nailed their picks in last year's draft with Hayward and Oliver Florent. They were also gifted Callum Mills out of their academy.

Their work in the rookie draft is just unbelievable. In their best 22 they have nine players who have come off their rookie list. The premiership winning Tigers had only two.

Since 2004 Sydney's success rate in the rookie draft is unrivaled. They could almost fill a full team from their rookie selections. Their ability to turn someone into a player no other club thought they could be is the real secret at Sydney.

Sydney's rookie drafting and development is so good that Collingwood handed over a future second round pick for Sam Murray, untried Sydney rookie.'

That last line sums it up really.

Would love to make an unrealistic attempt at Gold Coast Tom Lynch. Reckon he will be the highest paid player ever by the end of the year though.

Maybe, or maybe he'd just like to be in a team that plays finals every year, and will grab the flag in 2018!

He's 25 (26 in October), so I reckon this is the time. Be a might fine Tippett replacement! :D

Both are desperate for a FF and both have plenty of money
We should have a bit as well. Few should be out to pasture at the end of this year and if we don't win the thing we should be having a bit of a clean out.

Not saying we should go after Lynch as such....not saying we shouldn't either :)

I think going hard for Lynch would be a mistake. Buddy is good for another few seasons, Reid (not in the same class to be sure) is a contributor about to hit the best few years of his career, and between McCartin (hopefully) Blakey, and Pink, and to a lesser extent Aliir and Maibum we should be able to manage the next few years fine in regard to KPFs. If its a Buddy situation and he seeks us out obviously we have to make it work and get him, you just can't turn down that sort of player. But at the moment the core of a list that will see us there or there abouts for the next decade is coming together, I hope we keep our powder dry so that we can keep this group together (Jones etc) or make a jump for any deficiencies that become apparent in time.
