As a long time and committed North Supporter I've been following the goings on involving the club I love with great interest and angst l might add. There seems to me quite a bit of circumstantial evidence that enables me to come to a number of conclusions. Even if some are wrong, I'd still like some serious questions asked of some people involved -specifically Duff and a number of the shareholders.

Firstly a few things we know (Elaborated version of my initial post)

-The AFL is keen to expand the 'brand' to an ever widening potential audience throughout Australia. They've shown in the past they don't particulalry care for the rank and file supporter in Melbourne and are willing to sacrifice them at the alter in order to acheieve these goals.South Melbourne and Fitzroy supporters have already been sacrificed in this quest and can lay testimont to this. The AFL have expressed an intention to make the Gold Coast experiment work, and are willing to throw upwards of $200m at it.

-Southport are a committed buyer. They've expressed serious interest over a fairly lengthy period in getting one of the highly valuable 16 licences. We also know they are well cashed up (some say to the tune of $30million) and have a serious cash cow in their pokie club to support a likely financial struggle over its first few years in the competition.

-Recently the AFL has spoken to a number of our influential shareholders (the '8') with a view to potentially buying out their shares. Vlad stated his interest was all about giving the club back to the members, but that doesn't wash with me. MY assumption is the're doing this on behalf of the committed buyer, that being Southport. Potentially they could be acting as the broker to the deal and being the major beneficiary for it to happen, ie fulfill their blueprint for the future for QLD.

Meanwhile a few goings on within our club.

-Duff and the Board of that day decided it would be financially prudent for North to agree to 10 games over the next 3 years, receiving a fairly genourous $400,000/year "to help shore up our finances - to make us more viable financially for the future so as to stay in Melbourne"

-Our CEO resigns, taking up 'new opportunities' at Collingwood. Having dealt with Geoff in the past, the decision seemed very quick and reactive. One might suggest he didnt want any part of what may be going to occur over the coming months after getting wind of it.

-De Rauch (along with Ronnie J), seem to me the only one of the few major players in this 'game' committed to keeping the NMFC at our spiritual home. It seems he begins to smell a rat and attempts to buy out any more shares loosely avaiable for sale. Unsuccessfully l might add.

-De Rauch then builds a ticket of potential boardmembers that he can trust to challenge Duff. De Rauch holds approximately 35% of the voting rights to the election, but even a holding that large doesnt guarantee he gets on the board.

-There appears to be 3 camps. The De Rauch Camp, the "8" Dawson Camp and the Ansett Camp. Greg Miller, one of the shareholders allocated B shares by Mr Ansett during the float expressed to USC in the media that through a long standing loyalty to Ansett, he'll vote the way Ansett deems fit (or words to that effect). My assumption is that balance of power lies with Ansett and his posse.

-Considering Ansetts long time commitment to the NMFC and the size of his 'control' he remains astoundingly silent through months of media speculation. This morning was the first real sign he is willing to show his hand to some extent. Where he sits on it all is still a mystery. He goes on about protecting the club but doesnt really divulge too much of where he sits and what he thinks may or may not happen.

-The shareholders proceed to vote Duff and his ticket (some of them amongst 'the 8' who were at Mondays meeting with the AFL) back onto the board.

-Last Sunday Joeseph calls together a forum to discuss Norths intentions with about 400 concerned supporters. Duff is suprised at this and reluctantly attends. He speaks some vague placatory double speak about how North is committed to staying in Melbourne.

Goes on about how the AFL are wasting their time buying shares as it doesnt deliver them what they want. If this is true, then why do the AFL persist and make themselves available for such discussions. They are not in the business of throwing money away to line the pockets of shareholders without it coming at a price.

- Not 2 days later some of these same Duff ticket boardermembers, as shareholders, meet with the AFL to discuss selling their shares. De Rauch the major shareholder, and Joeseph (out spoken pro Arden St. advocates) are not invited. Meanwhile,Duff is indisposed ,playing golf and castigating a greensman.

My question to my fellow Shinboners and to the media who don't seem to me asking the right questions in my opinion are these

-How long has Duff known that some of Norths shareholders are willing to sell?

-Now that Duff knows there are sellers, what is he doing about it to ensure he acts within the mandate he inherintly assumed when he became chairman of the North Melbourne Football Club. He may be appointed by shareholders but his mandate comes from rank and file supporters.

-When did the AFL start sounding out these shareholders with view to purchasing? Who is the protagonist behind this?

-Why did our CEO resign for a lesser job at Collingwood-did he get wind of somnething?

-The big one for me- Why hasn't Mr Ansett who, if you do the numbers and consider that no one shareholder has more than 5% of the vote, not stated his position in regards to merger/sale/relocation when he seems to hold the balance of power in his hands. If he was aligned to De Rauch then De Rauch's ticket would have got up at the election. So is he aligned to the Dawson 8?

-Why has Southport recently sacked its long time highly successful CEO and AFL negotiator seemingly deemed "not suitable to deal with people from North and the AFL" ?

-Where do the Brayshaws sit on all of this. They have been remarkably quiet over the last few days.

My belief is if we the members can get some answers to some of these, to me, perplexing questions - maybe, just maybe we can do something about trying to stop the AFL moving our beloved club lock stock and smoking barrel to SE Queensland (as De rauch has suggested "as early as next year".)

l know alot of this has been done over and over, but its all there in one post. Be interested to see if anyone runs with it, ie Mr Barratt? We need answers, real answers, not motherhood statements or politically correct statements that feed the lemmings and keep them at bay.

Bob Ansett supported Mark Dawson's ticket (Duff) at the election. If he'd supported de Rauch instead, there's a strong likelihood that Duff would have been out.

How can you be so sure pharro? But on the flipside the strong likelihood also that the missing board members at the members forum shows how lack of unity & leadership is clearly evident. :(

On the subject of Geoff Walsh leaving the club it had nothing to do with the gold coast and everything to do with the $500,000 a year that eddie threw at him.

I wonder what the late NMFC great Ron Casey would make of all this???????!!!!!!!!

T'toes

Do you know I can still see the devastion on his face when the merger was not allowed to proceed. :(

Ron Casey loved North with a passion.

If there was someone like him with his vision and commitment to North, all this rubbish would be solved.

mmm interesting stuff Wrath. Good to see it all in one post.

A few questions of my own. What was the guy on SEN talking about this morning; that a 'dairy company' was 'prepared' to fork out millions to be a part of the Roos move north. Too many conspiracy theories for mine.

You are right Wrath - we need answers, truthful answers to clear this up.

Now that is going to be difficult. No doubt the AFL and other pro GC interested parties are going to be very tight lipped. Surely there is someone there that isn't 100% on board, who prepared to come forward?? Just a matter of finding out who that is.

Now I voted for Ron Joseph and the Brayshaws and feel we have a direct avenue to ask them to work for us the members to find out and report back what is going on. Hopefully these wheels are already turning.

What I would like to know is what can we rank and file members do? Currently we have over 19,000 members. Has anyone ever actually asked us what we want? What influence can we exert?

Just to be clear I am absolutley pro staying in Melbourne.

As a former Fitzroy fan i say dont trust the afl!!!! They would screw over their own mother to make a buck! I do follow brisbane, but i can tell u that a relocation or merger isnt the same as following the club that won your heart in the first place.
Do whatever to keep your club, guys and girls, stand up to those thugs in the AFL!

Ron Casey's devastation was due to the fact that in his mind the opportunity to save North as a Melbourne based club, was lost when the merger fell over. Oh so sadly all indications are that unless something major changes in the current debacle, he looks like being right.

Thanx for outlining the saga Wrath.

It's all been a hidden agenda after all. Duff should step down immediately. Credibility shot to pieces. Rick Aylett's ploy to pepper the members with NM this, NM that, has been a valiant effort to keep the flame burning but eventually will be snuffed out. Is the board living in denial...?? that seems to be the sad outcome.

How can we think for one second that an amalgamated club, destined to be based on the GC still be distinctly related to the NMFC??

what an insult if they (AFL:mad: ) think we NMFC members will believe it's the same team with the NMFC on the back of the jumper.

The Fitzroy fans that didn't follow the Brisbane amalgamation (Lions name is the only trace), are the orphans fans. Seems like most of us will be too.

I've lost MUCH faith in the AFL. The usual suspects will be regarded as the last bastion that represented our club.

No, the Lions name is not the only trace. That might be the only bit you notice from the outside. There's quite a bit of Fitzroy in the Brisbane Lions, which is why many Fitzroy fans follow them (including myself)

Otherwise I concur with dannitori's comments. It's not quite the same and yes, you should resist as much as much as possible.

Wrath - I think these are great questions. And once again, we have loads of questions, and no answers. Why are the shareholders talking to the AFL and not the members? Why can't the board accept that we don't need them to have all the answers - we would just like to know what their vision is! What are the plans? Where do they see the future?

At the meeting for members, I asked a club official why the board was so reluctant to talk openly about their dealings with the gold coast. The answer? They don't see the membership as 'ready' to hear it. Well, I'm tired of being treated like a child by this club, who seem to think that they are able to judge what I need to hear, and when I need nto hear it. And at the same time, assume that my undying loyalty means I will continue to unquestioningly buy a membership in whatever model they propose going forward. I love this club. But a bit of love in return really wouldn't go astray! (and if love is too much, how about just some respect for our views as members and supporters????)

An excellent post and one that highlights how deep this issue is.

There are still a couple of minor points I'm not clear on. My recollection of when RJ was thinking of nominating for the board he meet with Ansett beforehand and later said that he could get on with shareholder votes or go via members. I assumed from this that RJ had the support of Ansett which would now seem contradictory to Ansett supporting Duff(8).

As for the shareholders selling to the AFL that idea was first floated and reported before or around the time of the board nominations, so apart from the fact that only a few shareholders meet with the AFL without knowledge of the others I'm surprised that it has caused such an uproar this week.

Although to supporters this board situation is all about the GC situation. I'm sure there are a hell of a lot of other things that are dividing our board at present.

And on Duff's mandate from the members. Well I would disagree that he has one. In fact he can't he is mandated by law to do what is best for the shareholders.

So the PR exercise was a complete and utter farce.
Even more unforgivable considering all the 'whoo-ha' statements by RJ (..."over my dead body" ) will look like
a embarrassing joke waiting to biting him in the backside.

The re-development funds for a shrine? is the last ounce of gratitude that will remain for the NMFC members. You know if those hard earned memorable trophies get shipped interstate...then it's kaput.

Roylion,

Just a matter of interest, do you know where the Fitzroy FC Premiership Cup trophies are kept?

The only premiership cup (1944) that Fitzroy won that is in existence is in Melbourne.

In fact six of the eight Fitzroy flags are lost. The first five premiership flags were destroyed in a fire at the Fitzroy Cricket Club's member's pavilion in 1913.

That's tragic. I didn't know that. How often has the Bris Lions played in the Fitzroy jumper since amalgamating. I can only recall once vs the Pies. (I went to two Fitzroy final games in early 80's btw...barracking for the FFC on those games).

Is there a annual supporters function that keeps you loyal ROY fans united?

There's the Fitzroy-Brisbane Lions Historical Society which have regular functions each season. For example the first Fitzroy-Brisbane Lions Historical Society function for this year will be held on Sunday April 22, at 11:00am at the Fitzroy Bowling Club, Brunswick Street. All Roys supporters are most welcome to attend. Former Fitzroy players John Barker and Neville Taylor are speaking.

There's a function every month.

Also the Fitzroy-Brisbane Lions Historical Society and the Fitzroy-Brisbane Past Players and Officials Association along with the Brisbane Lions will host one of the largest scale reunions of VFL/AFL players ever at the Melbourne Convention Centre on Saturday 11 August 2007. Every Fitzroy, Bears and Brisbane Lions players or a relative (if deceased) will be invited to attend.

Three times so far (once in 2003 and twice in 2005). They will wear it another two times this year....in Rounds 14 vs. West Coast and Round 19 against Hawthorn.
