No. Be an adult - be responsible for your own lifestyle choices.

I can gamble without becoming addicted. Why should millions like me be punished because of people that can't control themselves?

How about some personal responsibility once you hit 18.

how is the removal of betting advertising from (hypothetically) all forms of AFL media, penalizing you?

I don't gamble, period, never have, not 1 bet ever, I don't begrudge you your right to bet, go for it, but why when I watch, listen or read anything to do with AFL, is it accompanied by an add for a betting company. Conversely, why am I "punished" and made to endure the betting ad's for your benefit.

It isn't just ad's anymore, they pay so much money the networks give studio space and segment time to this cash cow.

this is the AFL's dirty secret that half of the Victorian teams rely on poker machines to remain solvent.

as opposed to Fremantle who have a mobile betting company as a Platinum sponsor.....

crawl back in your hole

I think the ban needs to come from the Federal government first. No betting odds or advertising on TV in kid friendly time slots and this would filter into the AFL games. It doesn't worry me about jump sponsors or sign board logo's as they aren't directly communicating to children. This would be a step in the right direction and they can apply the rules to other vice industries too eventually.

It's beyond a joke

AT least in the UK the FA have the balls to cut ties with gambling companies

interesting reading

They have balls? Half of the premiership clubs have a gambling sponsor on the front of their jerseys oppose to the AFL's 1 team. As well as major competition sponsors being betting agencies. Gambling advertisement in the UK is so far worse then Australia you've got it wrong.

Whilst I agree the federal government should legislate - the AFL seems to think they are the moral leaders in our country.

So let's see them show it by banning gambling sponsorship and promotion in the AFL. Let's see how good their moral leadership is when it actually hits their hip pocket.

The new tv rights agreement is the perfect time to do it too. Put it in the contracts.

Yep - it needs to go beyond that though - it needs to come off clubs/jumpers/ground signage etc

And it would be a massive hit to the TV rights - as those broadcasters aren't going to be able to sell as many ads

They will still fill all the ads, it'll just be a tier down in revenue though since other industries won't pay as much. Sport use to have Smoking ads too and they all survived once they were banned.

Yep - but sport didn't willingly give those up

The AFL try and take moral leadership positions on a whole range of social issues. But those social issues don't cost them money.

I want to know how deep their moral conviction is when it impacts their bottom line

On apparent evidence - it's not very deep.

Agree, no business is going to give up cash. All the moral high ground stuff is because they think it is a long term strategy to make more money. Banks are the same, they are all the same and the AFL is a business.

Government needs to act first with advertising in certain time slots and dilute the cash. It then becomes an easier decision with the small sponsors etc once the direct relationship is cut.

How can the AFL regulate advertising on TV, newspaper, radio, ground and internet when it had no control over any of those?

I don’t like the betting ads because they’re stupid. It is worth noting though that the world is significantly different than when tobacco advertising was banned and getting replacement sponsorship will be difficult

i didn't realize Carlton Breweries were a mobile betting company.

Fremantle are solvent without the requirement of feeding off other people's misery in the gambling industry. Feels good.
I must have misread, but is it much better that they're diamond sponsor.......

I don't know if this has been said already.

Nick Dal Santo on radio last night said that the AFLPA had talks with the AFL a few years ago about gambling sponsors, the AFL said if the players are willing to take a 25% pay cut, they would get rid of the sponsor.

At the rate of how things are going, won't be long until clubs are fighting for the BetEasy Premiership.

I'm not sure a TAB sponsorship is quite the same as having a heap of pokies...

True but there is no doubt the gaming industry contributes to the coffers of all clubs, including the WA ones, although at least I respect how both clubs don't rely on pokies.

Just noticed on the AFL ladder on the AFL website now has an “odds” toggle button. Much the same as the live ladder toggle button.

What an absolute disgrace. Not sure how long this option has been available, but I only noticed it yesterday. And the default option is to display the odds - disgrace.

My 8 year old likes to get on the AFL website to look at the ladder to see where the Hawks and Crows are coming. Do I now have to explain to her what the odds means. Does that start the next generation of problem gamblers.

The AFL should be ashamed. Don’t have to look to far to see gambling problems in their own ranks. Why do we need to expose kids to this same.

I will be writing a letter to the communications and Sports Ministers, and I encourage anyone that feels the same to also write.

Enough is enough.

It's been there since the start of the year or close to it and I agree that it's an absolute disgrace.

I also get irrationally irritated whenever Nathan Brown pops up because I know it will be a footy anecdote followed by a segue into gambling. I guess though that money talks.
