Looks absolutely ridiculous.

I have warmed to this somewhat but I still think it's one great big marketing exercise. Especially the "L. R. T." thing, what a load of shit. If he never got called by that nickname then I can guarantee it would have said "Roberts-Thomson" or "R-Thomson" on the back. It's just the AFL trying to make an extra buck.

And E92_ is right that from a practical point of view, it just doesn't work. But seeing the groundswell of online support – from what the majority of it appears to be by "fairweather" fans – means that this will almost certainly become permanent by next year. The AFL has no qualms in messing with tradition.

What was the general reaction to numbers being introduced over 100 years ago?

Thanks for confirming that he will play in DreamTeam this week.

Doesn't he have brother as well?
Yep, at Geelong. I wouldn't be surprised if they made one for every listed player, though.

Right now the execution isnt perfect but I like the look and idea. It will grow on us and soon enough the jumpers will look weird without names.

I can imagine saying to my kids in 20 odd years time: I remember when the AFL jumper didn't have player names on the back.

Like someone said previously, at first back sponsorships looked weird but now a jumper doesn't look right without one. This will be the same case for names eventually.

For me, as only a casual fan, being able to associate a number and name is key to learning new players and teams, and having them together, even if only visible in a closeup or newspaper shot, is such a help

It's so easy to access a database on the club website or the AFL website to look up the player, and you won't even be able to read the names at the game or on TV unless there's a close up.

I just don't see the point. It doesn't make the jumpers look better either.
