The best teams at NOT going back to back

I'd probably also say Collingwood 2011, but Geelong from that era was better and that's who they lost to.
That being said for a massive part of 2011 the Pies felt like a machine team - ended up having a really bad run of injuries if I recrecall
Yep. Copped injuries at the worst possible time for us and the best possible time for the Cats. Right before the finals. That's why it's never a good idea to get ahead yourself . No matter how good you are there's always the possibility that injuries are gonna sink you.

Carlton 1980 and 1983.
Should have won 79-80 back to back but Jezza left for political reasons so a clown stepped in as coach called Percy, like out of Blackadder comedy show and a year went to waste.
1982-83 but suspensions to Bosustow and others right before finals and a few injuries saw us fall well short.

Cats 2008 would have been 2007 and 2008 but bad kicking is bad football.
Percy's entire pre match address: "Just go out there and win."

Richmond 2018 is still the best football team I can remember in my 42 year life, except for one disastrous half of footy and the 2m yank ruined it.. They were completely dominant and no one looked close to touching them.
Our backline was crook that night.
WE did peter out in games late in the season, scraping home with wins.

Pies treat that game like a flag.

#rentfree

And now their coach an ex Tiger.

Gastro ruined totally ruined their chances of going back to back and three-peating.

At least 15 players who played that night were sick as a dog all week.

Melbourne 1958. End thread.

Runner-up 1954
Premiers 1955
Premiers 1956
Premiers 1957
Runner-up 1958
Premiers 1959
Premiers 1960

1958 was one of our most dominant seasons in that period, finishing three games clear on top of the ladder. Beat eventual premier in the home and away season, and the semi final, but was pipped at the last post. Realistically should have won six in a row.

West Coast 2018, the lucky one off premiership
Don't think Richmond won away much in 2018. Their MCG streak was gonna end sometime.

Kissed on the dick in 2019 being given last 7 games at home at MCG before finals after winning premiership & finishing top in 2018. I think it was drop 1 game and wouldn't of even been in the top 4.

2020 15 game shit season due to Corona World.

Richmond most 'meh' dynasty evers.

Ah I miss the Richmond / Eagles supporters banter. 2018 was a nice Bradbury flag for your mob, but you gotta take them when they are there.

Yeah who knows.
Personally thought Buckleys coaching was supreme that game. Contrary to what many seem to remember it was Sidebottom that killed us that night. But Cox was still very impressive up forward.

So 2019 has an asterix because we got to play too many games at the MCG, and 2020 where we played almost the entire season (including every final) interstate also gets to have an asterix.

We often talk about the great dynasty teams etc which can get very boring as it’s obvious who they are

My question is a little more nuanced - which teams are the best NOT to go back to back?

I’m going to start with Hawthorn 2015. To this day it shits me.

What are your thoughts/examples?

Essendon 2001. Should have won 1999 too, but the brain box melted for that year.

Cats 2008 also mentions.

/thread.

No asterix..... just kissed on the dick in 2019 (seriously bullshiz after previous 2 years results)

2020, who knows where you would of finished in a full season.

Still a great team. Just Nothing on Lions/Cats/Hawks
