But he was playing?

But he was used differently.

Im no tactical expert but my read is that Liverpool’s defence works best when they have Fabinho ss holding mid and Henderson tracking back from a more forward mid Position to support the defence.

This allows TAA and Robbo to go forward as much as they like and leaves 4 players still able to create a proper defensive line.

I haven’t watched last nights game yet but I do know Fab came on for Hendo - they did not play together.

I think Henderson and Liverpool are their best when Fab is on and Hendo is on at the same time assisting the defence from a more forward position.

I think it mainly that we didn't start with Fab - plus fair play to Leeds they seemed absolutely deadly up front. We didn't defend great with VVD with some mistakes and Gomez not near the action but some of the Leed's goals were top shelf.

Curtis Jones was excellent when he came on, made a real positive difference. I think we’ll see heaps of him this season.

He looked a class or 2 above in the U23s last season. There would be times when Klopp would give Lallana a run around off the bench, and I thought that Jones would have been a better option.

The U23s play their first game in the PL2 tonight (Mini-derby vs Everton) at 10pm melb time on LFCTV.

Interested to see who plays as there is a handful of players with first team experience that didn't make the squad of 18 vs Leeds.

We have a lot of players that could be going out on loan or sold before the end of this window.

Notable players outside the squad of 18: (Also not including Ox, Shaq, Kostas, Wilson and Kane who are unavailable for selection)
GK: Karius, Kelleher, Grabara
LB: Larouci
CB: Koumetio, Phillips, VDB
RB: Neco, Hoever
CM: Grujic, Woodburn, Clarkson
LW: Millar
ST: Brewster, Awoniyi
RW: Elliott

Our midfield presses very high but teams are getting better at bypassing that press and run straight at our back 4 who are often caught very square nowadays
I noticed the other teams do awkward chips to wide areas forward.

So we adopt a new strategy on corners with Virgil running in from the edge of the box, to prevent him from being held and virtually mauled by opposition defenders, as had happened last season.
It's kind of ironic then, that Curtis gets pinged for holding back the Leeds player who followed Virgil in that disallowed goal.
I like the tactic though, it should make opposition defenders more accountable.

If we can't get enough money out of any combination of that lot to pay for a proper 4th choice CB or even dare i say it Thiago, then i don't know what to think anymore. A quality wide forward is just a pipe dream.

Yes. Tactics evolve. We will have plans to counter that, but I would have loved to have seen Thiago for example, in action today. We would have reduced our reliance on our fullbacks and have someone like him provide searching and more incisive forward passing. It would have made Bielsa think about his murderball strategy.
