Wouldn't mind seeing Matip come in to replace Gomez. Gomez for all his talent still hasn't learnt to time a challenge and tends to dive in and get beaten a little too easily at times. Matip is a lot better at knowing when to make a challenge and knowing when to just jockey/hold his ground. Not sure Klopp will do it this week but I can see it happening at some stage.

Don't get me wrong I think Gomez is still going to have a big part to play for us but I personally never felt as safe with a JoGo/VVD combo as I did with VVD/Joel. We need to think back to the 2nd half of the 18-19 season and how solid we were defensively.

You say that, but Jota is only 23 and which is young. Hoever is fighting for a spot with the two youngest members of the first team (Gomez and TAA) - so I don't think it's not without some forethought that these specific players are being sold. We've still got Jones and Elliott on the books, both of whom seem a lot closer to the first team than Hoever or Rhian. Nor realistically would I say that both of those players represented our future, they are two talented youngsters sure but it's not a crippling blow to lose them.

I think that’s a sign of a strong club they’ve built though that we can do that ...

What good does it do Chelsea and man city spending 150+ net every year .. I much prefer the way we do our business and our owners have built that culture from the ground up
