I wonder if this has legs from Maddock, or whether Minamino will be it for January? I recall a few other journos hinting along similar lines regarding Nike and high profile signings, though no confirmation anything would happen until the end of the season.

Orstein said we're unlikely to spend big money on the likes of Sancho and Mbappe and will more likely look for bargains like Minamino, he has been getting it right to be fair

Well only sign a Sancho or mbappe if one out three leave. Will strengthen attacking left mid imo.

I don’t doubt that’s what Ornstein has heard. Heading in to every transfer window Klopp and the club posture that ‘we don’t have any money’ or ‘x player is too expensive’, but then we go out and spend £50m on Keita, £65m on Alisson, £75m on Van Dijk. The money is there and we’ll spend it for the right player.

I think he’s probably right that Mbappe is unlikely (unfortunately!). No idea when but I suspect we’ll make an offer for Sancho. Telling that the usual suspects who piss on any transfer rumours haven’t pissed on that one and have acknowledged we’re interested.

I‘d also like us to look at a young apprentice left back to support Robertson.

If Lallana, Lovren, Wilson and Brewster move on at the end of the season then one or two reasonably big name signings could be a possibility. Mbappe seems unrealistic though unless Nike is funding most of it.

Here's Ornstein's latest thought bubble

Him branching into Liverpool news is interesting, he works with Pearce at the Athletic nowadays so he would know stuff

It's funny how Ornstein has emerged as a Liverpool ITK. He's broadening his horizons since joining The Athletic.
As always though i'll wait for Pearce,Reddy and Joyce for now.
In any case, it's not Jurgen's style to splash out on marquee signings unless there is a specific need, like Virgil and Alisson.
But as ADL9798 said, there were those suggestions (expectation from Nike) that there might be a big signing to coincide with the announcement of Nike as our kit supplier.
Who knows.

Not that it would be needed, but if anyone needs a reminder of how well the club has been managed checkout our player contract/wage deals as opposed to the league in general:

Us -> https://www.spotrac.com/epl/liverpool-f.c/payroll/
League -> https://www.spotrac.com/epl/rankings/contract-value//
This list loses all credibility for mine when i see Sadio at 100,000. Really? Especially after contracts were improved preseason by FSG?
No one knows, it's all guess work, but in any case it's been reported elsewhere he's on 150,000.

Yep fair enough, I wasn't sure how accurate they would be .. Even allowing for some swings here and there it would suggest we've been more sensible and thrifty than some others, but like you've said or inferred, it could be way out of whack I guess? :shrug:

I think Brewster is still highly thought of and will be retained. I can see the other three leaving though. Should get a tidy sum for Wilson.

The Nike deal doesn't kick in until June and I think there had been groundwork already laid for someone to come in on the summer. I think when the deal was being struck that would have all been a part of it.

So I expect a big name in the summer (hoping for Sancho) to arrive at the same time the Nike deal gets unveiled and announced. It's how Nike do things.

Exciting though.
