"Snake takes the lead", played that game all the time years ago, dld not long ago and it's still as enjoyable as ever.

NBA Hangtime would have to be up there, best basketball game by far.

Good old N64 days.
I hadn't bought a new game for 7 months until yesterday so I can't judge the past few games that came out. Far Cry 2, COD5, FIFA 2009, Tiger Woods 2009 and GTA IV would probably be on the list after I play them.

off the top of my head. honourable mentions to Gabriel Knight and Police Quest. (and peasant's quest.)

1.Sid Meir's Civilisation (playing this as a kid, even now is an all night affair.)

2.Half Life:Counterstrike (started playnig in beta, watching it evolve was amazing)

3.Call of Duty 4 (this game is FPS at its finest today. SP is short but had me in awe)

4.Master of Orion 2 (stupid game was so hard, I struggled as any race but the rock people as you didn't have to feed them but, god I loved this game.)

5.Sid Meirs Colonization (very underated game that involved alot of micromanagment)

6.Sid Meir's Civilisation IV (you can play this civ how you want. 3 was too complex but this game was easier whilst still providing a challenge)

7.Diablo II (Bring on D3, many hours of no sleep and magic finding here.)

8.World of Warcraft (3 70's, a marriage almost in tatters... addiction personified)

9.Kings Quest VI (as a kid when Dad was away with the Navy I used to spend long hours playing this with Mum. When we finally got out of the desert Dad took the day off work to come see and take over!)

10.Leisure Suit Larry 3 (My brother and I figured out every single answer to the adult lock at the start so we could play this raunchy little number.)

Stiff to miss: Police Quest, Transport Tycoon, Space Quest, Roller Coaster Tycoon, VRally2, Tekken 1,2, Dune 2, Wolfenstein 3D, Starcraft, Prince of Persia, Sonic 2, Super Mario Bros, Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, Heroes of Might and Magic 123 and sooo many more it isnt funny.

This is making me want to reinstall a floppy drive in my pc and DosBox some of these gems.

82 posts and not one person has mentioned ... Bubble Bobble.

Really poor form ppl.

Where is Sid Meiers Pirates?

And The Last Ninja?

What is wrong with all you people??
Giving away your age, methinks. ;)

Yeah, Bubble Bobble was a good game back in the day.

Pirates is good on any platform (64, Amiga), but I especially enjoyed the (relatively) recent PC incarnation. Amazing.

As for The Last Ninja... I've always thought this was a bit over-rated. Not a bad game, but I didn't think it was the bees knees like most other people seemed to.

Pirates is best in its original Commodore 64 version.

I love The Last Ninja.

The C64 dominated!

I have to admit the gameplay on the 64 version is the best overall. I didn't think much of the dancing with the Governor's daughter ad infinitum in the PC version (aside from that, I loved the updated graphics etc.).

Yes, it was a hell of a machine for it's time. I've recently gotten into emulating it via CCS64. Well worth checking out if you fancy stepping back in time (and Winuae for emulating the Amiga is brilliant as well).

My days on the 64 will be blatantly obvious, but anyway...
Ask a gamer born in the 1970s what a "64" is and he'll tell you it's a Commodore 64.

Judging by the games mentioned in this thread so far, I get the feeling I'm a bit older than the majority of the other posters here. Hell, I've never even owned a Nintendo console...

1. GTA San Andreas
2. Street Fighter II
3. Mortal Kombat 3
4. International Cricket (NES)
5. GTA Vice City
6. Alex Kidd in Miracle World (Sega Master System II)
7. Aussie Rules Footy (NES)
8. Canis Canem Edit
9. Sonic the Hedgehog
10. Gran Turismo

couldnt squeeze in Tiger Woods 04, Madden 03 (?), GTA the original, Goldeneye, NHL 04, 2Xtreme, Abes Oddworld Odyssey, Theme Park.

tough to compile a list. from 4-10 they could go anywhere pretty much.

I don't see it that way personally. I've been gaming since the early 80's and have owned a fair majority of the consoles that've been out over the last 25 odd years (including an atari 2600, commodore 64 and some Tandy thing - can't even remember what it was called).

If I was to list my top 25 games of all time, a large majority of them would probably be 5 years old or less.

Simple fact is, I just enjoy the games that are around these days.

As an example, my top 3 would be Resi Evil 4, Half Life 2 and Ninja Gaiden, all within the last 5 or so years

Was it the TRS-80 by any chance? That was my very first computer, though it gave way very quickly to a Commodore 64.

That's fair enough. All the listings for Nintendo 64 games made me think most of the posters were young 'uns.

As an aside, I occasionally catch Good Game on ABC2. In the segment where they ask you to guess what the classic game is, most of the games shown seem to be for Nintendo or Sega systems, neither of which I've ever owned. It's almost as if they're unaware that video games actually pre-date both Sega and Nintendo systems.

Back to this here list: I think a more interesting list might be the Top 5 games on each system/console. Games made twenty years ago are always going to suffer in comparison to whatever the hot new titles on current gen systems are.

1. NBA Jam
2. GTA San Andreas
3. The Sims
4. Road Rash
5. Sonic the Hedgehog 2
6. Uncharted Drakes Fortune
7. Age of Empires 2
8. Spyro the Dragon
9. Total Annihlation
10. Assasins Creed
