The bigfooty top 25 games of all time *voting*

I don't see it that way personally. I've been gaming since the early 80's and have owned a fair majority of the consoles that've been out over the last 25 odd years (including an atari 2600, commodore 64 and some Tandy thing - can't even remember what it was called).

If I was to list my top 25 games of all time, a large majority of them would probably be 5 years old or less.

Simple fact is, I just enjoy the games that are around these days.

As an example, my top 3 would be Resi Evil 4, Half Life 2 and Ninja Gaiden, all within the last 5 or so years

Surely you have to factor in when games were produced when you are thinking "Top x number of games of all time" type topics though. That's why i still can't go past UFO: EU as no.1.

I have played games which are far prettier with almost as brilliant gameplay, but when you consider it was published in 1993 it becomes crystal clear that it will take something beyond sensational to knock it off on my personal list. And yet i'm not surprised that it's only on one other list here when i see that most people dont go back further than 5th-6th generation consoles.

Was it the TRS-80 by any chance? That was my very first computer, though it gave way very quickly to a Commodore 64.

That's fair enough. All the listings for Nintendo 64 games made me think most of the posters were young 'uns.

As an aside, I occasionally catch Good Game on ABC2. In the segment where they ask you to guess what the classic game is, most of the games shown seem to be for Nintendo or Sega systems, neither of which I've ever owned. It's almost as if they're unaware that video games actually pre-date both Sega and Nintendo systems.

Back to this here list: I think a more interesting list might be the Top 5 games on each system/console. Games made twenty years ago are always going to suffer in comparison to whatever the hot new titles on current gen systems are.

That's the one! http://www.1000bit.net/lista/dati/trs80coco2/trs80_coco2_2.jpg

It took a carteridge in the side and saved games on to tape.

We only had a couple of games for it; Dungeons of Daggorath - the Father of FP perspective games; and another I cannot exactly remember what it was called, I think it was Ice Castles.

Yes, ours too soon made way for the C64.

I think when talking classic gaming people tend to talk NES and Sega, it's because these are the systems that really seemed to send gaming to the masses.

I mean if you look at the sales figures of Mario Bros, it is just staggering.

Of course you have to take into account when they were produced. What certain games did for the industry is just simply amazing.

But I guess I'm just not a sentimental kind of guy....I like the newer and shinier one.

For the record, games such as Super Mario Bros would in fact make my list, but going back any further than that, probably not

anyone who hasnt played them is simply missing out. Not just great gameplay, but amazing and complex storylines. I spent 3 hrs doing research about the storyline, to prepair myself for the IV. ppl who have played it will understand lol. I STILL play the first one from time to time.
I think the fifth one will be set somewhere between Snake Eater and the 1st one... or possibly even a remake of the Zanzibar Metal Gear with Snake's old man.

You know, I'm pretty sure that DoD was the first game I ever bought for the TRS-80. Believe it or not, I found an emulator for it a few months back that you can run on a Windows PC.

I seem to recall also having a baseball game (imaginitively titled Tandy Colour Baseball if my memory serves me correctly) and something else with spaceships (wouldn't have a clue what it's called now). Dungeons of Daggorathwas definitely my favourite game on the system.

Also, as you'd recall, you could only buy them at Tandy and they were quite pricey. I seem to remember the joysticks were pretty poxy as well. They were kind of Atari-like, but the actual stick part of the joystick was very thin and flimsy.

I also remember that you could change the colour of the screen by typing something in at the command prompt, but as you filled the screen with text it would revert back to the original colour of the background (you were basically typing over the top of the new background colour). I seem to remember it being this sickening green colour, but I might be wrong there. It was a long time ago.

Yeah, I suppose that's true. I just get slightly irritated that the earlier systems tend to get largely ignored. This is particularly true of the Commodore 64. While, yes, it was actually a computer, I'd say I spent 95% of my time on it playing games. In a sense, it really was a games console (most people I know bought one to play games on it). Same goes for the Commodore Amiga, IMO.

It's an interesting question. I've been getting into emulation over the past year or so. I've downloaded a lot of old games I used to love 15-20 years ago. I have to admit that I find most of them incredibly poxy. Some systems I've revisited have been so laughably bad by today's standards that I found the majority of games simply unplayable (the Atari 2600 springs to mind).

On the other hand, there are a number of old games I've revisted that I simply can't stop playing (in all cases they were games I used to love playing back in the day). I like to think that I'm no misty-eyed nostalgic and that I'm judging the games on their relative merits, but sometimes I do wonder...

Both great games (though the NFS version I had was on the PS2, but probably featured similar gameplay). Hot Pursuit is without a doubt the best game in the series - and I'm pretty sure it's one of the earliest in the series as well. I've found most of the subsequent games in the series pretty samey and ho-hum.

As for Duke... we had that game installed at work roughly 11-12 years ago. All four of us (it was a small company) would have mad battles as soon as the clock ticked past 5:00. Really good as a multiplayer game, but almost as enjoyable as a lone experience.

I found a torrent for this a while back with a new, modern graphics pack included. With a bit of visual spit and polish, the game holds up really well by today's standards.

I do the same and agree with all you said. The fact some 10-15+ year old games stand up by today's standards at all I find quite incredible, however. But yeah, some games I loved i have found laughably bad on revisting them :p

Kung Fu on the NES springs to mind.

The tandy colour was an awesome computer for its time. some of the games like lunar rover and mega bugs were absolute gems and were my first experiences of computer games. is there an emulator for Tandy Colour games?

I here ya. UFO was just an amazing game. Was certainly on my list. And as I always harp on here, gameplay is KING. That's why so many games on my list aren't of this generation. Sure I love some of the new games coming out, but so much emphasis is put on how great the graphics are. Graphics are variable, as time goes on even Crysis will look crap one day, but gameplay is forever. That's why I still think Quake 1 is just the best FPS ever made. It was just such a fluke of design that it played so well. And if you pick it up today it still plays as well.

Ahh well, I do think though that (generally) the newer generation of gamers value glitz and polish more than the older gamers do. It could be just an old school thing...

Anyway, as a whole, I do think games are probably getting better overall, but still, there are some absolute gems out there that so many people overlook and will never play because they look 'crap'. The old addage is true: Dont judge a book by it's cover ;)

But I agree with what horsehead said. A LOT of games pre NES era were very basic and pretty much suck to play them now. They were just WAY TOO basic to be fun nowdays.

You mean this one:

I actually d/l'd this a number of months ago and still got chills playing it :thumbsu:

Gotta love Wacky Wheels. Clocked it!

Im pretty sure it was #2... i stand corrected if it wasnt.
It was the first version where you could drive holden/ford and first time u had to get away from the coppers. Lambo police car was awsum

Double Dragon 2

If this is the NES version you're talking about, you are on the money, DD2 on NES was AWESOME. I still play it nowdays with my mate occasionally, we enjoy it as much as we did when we were 12!

Thats the one :thumbsu:, my favourite game on NES. How can you forget the spinning cyclone kick, the drop knee you can only pull off when you land from a jump, grabbing goons and kneeing them in the head and then flipping them off a high rise building...this game had it all.

The NES version also had the extra 9th level it was cool fighting those shadow brothers even better when the game didnt end.

What was your rating?

I think I got to 1820 once...

on supremacy my best was 1704.. before everyone else learnt how to play it well... lol.. im not hovering between 1530s to low 1600s... i suck at suprem..

on dm i was 1750s.. now hover between 1650s and 1700...

x300_spartans if ur ever on...
