The Bulldogs and Umpires: Time for a Royal Commission?

Successful clubs like Richmond dgaf about free kicks. That's the mindset Bulldogs need to consider otherwise last night will keep happening and Weightman's goals will dry up further.
I'm unsure what you mean by "last night will keep happening".

We've played in two grand finals in 6 years and won one flag, and each year we've generally been at the top of the free kick differential ladder.

From my biased observation I took issue with only 3 free kicks last night:
  • Naughton holding - if all of those were paid - especially downfield, the game would turn into a bit of a farce. Attending games in person, that shit happens all the time, and with comfortably more force than the one last night.
  • JJ free for holding against Stephens - arguably there, but also could have been a free against JJ. 50-50 and should have been play on.
  • Stephens running too far. But that was also 50-50 and only annoys me because you'll see players run close to 30 without getting pinged all the time, and looked like he ran 15m exactly by comparison.
So there's 3 there and only 1 that I vehemently disagree with.

For the most part, I thought the umpires stayed out of it last night, and I think if both teams are getting sub-20 free kicks per game for the rest of the season, we should be pretty happy with it.

Have you seen the chart that shows the correlation between free kicks and scores?

I'm happy to post it but trust me, there isn't a correlation, so it literally isn't an advantage to have more free kicks. With that being said, why does having more free kicks annoy you?

More free kicks are no advantage?

New game plan guys, just give away loads of free kicks!

It's clear as day a conspiracy against the Swans.

I'm calling it now, Swans to Tassie, to become the Tassie Whine and diners.
Pffft do you really think the AFL will move the most supported club in the country (as per Roy Morgan's indisputable survey)?

I am happy for all those to be paid...players will stop soon enough.

This game is hard enough to umpire as it is, asking umpires to determine force of the jumper tug before deciding just adds another grey area. It is against the rules so just pay it if you see it.

Does this really warrant a main board post? There's more than enough places to post this already, and it just comes across as needlessly sinking the boot in for mine.

I thought the umpiring was good last night.

I'd be happy if they weren't paid downfield, just think it's too harsh a price to pay when it will happen minimum dozens of times a game and the umpire won't see it.

Yawn. "Where it matters most" (cliche Sydney fan logic), in actual fact it doesn't matter at all so probably not even worth the time to post about it.

Also lol that this chart domain starts the YEAR AFTER the most umpire assisted finals series of all time.

Run it for 2016. I dare you.

You dare me? You realise the remaining 3 teams who made the prelims that year all had a negative free kick differential >-40 so the chart for that year won't show what you're hoping.

Maybe you just don't understand how the chart/stats work. Or maybe there is no correlation between free kicks and score differential, except when it's the Bulldogs but no other team? Sounds plausible.

This is just the most stupid thing I have ever read in my life.

That data is absolutely irrelevant.

I mean seriously, I'm sitting here with my head in my hands shaking with disbelief as to how utterly idiotic this 'data' is in terms of how you're interpreting it.

My god.
The data that is irrelevant is the free kick differential ladder.

Thanks for the “most stupid thing you’ve ever read” comment before. You just proved to everyone that you never read what you write before you post.

It's a s**t spectacle. Spoils enjoyment for the game.
It's still cheating.
And Dogs fans should be concerned about the direction the coach hs taken this playing group.
Why? We won a flag with this coach and played in a grand final last year. We’ve had a down season this year but you telling me your club has had a better six years since you choked in the grand final?

This common mentality that free kicks should be distributed out evenly really highlights how poorly some people see the game tbh
When you walk through a shopping centre and see one of those extremely challenged and drug affected people causing a scene just remember, they to can purchase phones.

It explains a lot of the posters on this forum.
