When was the last time you remember a solid bump being laid, for me it would be Franklin's on cousin where he was suspended (imo unfairly due to height).

The AFL has stealth killed it and yet no one cares, for me it was a big component of the game no contest took more courage then one where 2 players run head on for each other knowing full well the other is going to take them out with a huge bump.
This rarely happens if at all in the modern game am I the only one who misses these collisions, does the game not generate enough interest/$$ that we still have to pander to the Sydney mums who the AFL are trying to swoon with the softening of the game?

In all honesty where do you see the current game in terms of physicality and do we really want to see the game turn into a glorified Gaelic match? Which is where the game is headed.

Bit early for the first "THE BUMP IS DEAD" thread of the season isn't it?

You think it's not?

If it isn't dead it is on it's death knell, rules are far too tight on players who play this way.

@Steve ^^ was a bump but you have to admit it is very rare to see (also wasn't the biggest hit I've seen but none the less acceptable) :)

Lenny on Chapman in prelim 2010

What was amazing about that bump was that Geelong were playing Collingwood in the 2010 prelim, so Lenny shouldn't have even been there. :p

Seeing as Chappy was on the ground in immense pain I'd call Lenny's definitely a bump. Franklin's hit Cousins in the head so I wouldn't call it a good bump.

Mate Cousins slipped into it and I wasn't saying it was a great bump it was just the last full on attempt I remembered.

Also it's hard not to hit him in the head when a) he slipped b) he gives away what 12 -15 cm in height.

The rules are too tight on the application, fair enough taking out the elbows and head high hits on players bent over the footy but a lot of the others are unnecessary and more due to the receiving player not protecting themselves and sometimes deliberately.

Franklin was reckless though- he knows he's got about 16 cm on cousins so that's something all tall players have to learn to deal with, in saying that i'm not sure he should of been rubbed out.

Apart from sanitising the game, I think it's the right decision to reduce the bump. Although it's a great spectacle, I'm happy to see less of it if it means less injuries. You wanna see the best players out on the field week in week out. If that comes at the expense of the bump than I'm happy to see it gone.

If the best players can't handle the true physicality of the game then they aren't really the best players.
