Multiplat The Callisto Protocol (From the creator of Dead Space)

This game is a perfect entree if you want to play scary games but normally too much of a wuss. You quickly desensitise to the jump scares and the rest is just the background sound scape. I actually found myself starting to laugh at how brutal some of the gore was.

Dead Space is a definite step up though. IMO parts of that game are truly terrifying and I'll never get used to a necromorph bursting out of a random vent.

There are some guns but they're later. The game was mostly designed around melee combat. Glen Schofield said this was because he wanted you to be up close to the enemy hoping it would make it more scary than just being able to pew pew them at range. They spent ages working on third person melee combat with how dodging and stuff works but that was also a bit of it's undoing. It's kind of cool and involved when you're fighting only one enemy, but it kind of works against you when you're fighting more than one. Hard to explain but anyone who has played it should understand what I mean.

Really happy to read this. I played Dead Space a month ago (not being a fan of horror games/movies at all), had heard about it being one of the scariest games around and didn’t get scared once. I thought maybe I had misread what sort of genre the game is haha. So it’s nice to hear that Callisto Protocol is a step down in the horror lol.

Callisto is just a creepy vibe and really pretty to look at. It's also more just pure gore than any real horror.

The devs that made this game are capable of making a classic. The bones are there for a really good game, I’m enjoying myself and they could learn from this and improve upon it to create a better experience.

I would comfortably give it a 7.5. They’re capable of making a 9 or 9.5/10 game here.

I agree. First game from a new developer and I don't understand why it was received so poorly. It definitely wasn't ground breaking but it was never meant to be. It has also been one of the most polished games to release for some time. Now we'll never know what the future of the game could have been as Glen Schofield left the studio just recently.

This ended up being a really fun game. It took me about 3 chapters to realise that I had to stomp on everything I kill for ammo/health drops (probably mentioned in the turtorials which I of course glossed over lol), but when I started doing that the game became so much more fun.

My weapons of choice were shotgun/melee weapon, both decently upgraded. The final boss I had enough money to purchase and upgrade the assault rifle, which made the boss an easier kill than the shotgun which was slow as **** to reload and then it became a close quarters fight… not a great idea lol.

All in all I enjoyed it and happy there is a NG+ mode. It makes the game an easy replay.

Does it have an easy mode?

Normal is the lowest difficulty. You need to choose one of the difficulty settings with Minimum, Medium or Maximum security. I did Normal/Minimum and it provided a very good challenge.

I reckon I am going to start a NG+ playthrough after Spiderman 2. I had so much fun playing it. I had a look at if this will get a sequel and unfortunately it sounds like it won’t because it sold poorly. Being a PS+ game now so soon after the release date is a bad sign as well. Pretty disappointing.

Tell me the biggest jump scares in the game were the holograms without telling me. Those always caught me off guard. 😂

What's going to unfortunately get looked over the most by normies who might not understand as much about development is how technically adept this game is. The skin materials and the way light interacts with them is absolutely amazing. Unreal has a really advanced material system but you need to be really skilled to get the most out of it. You can grab any decent looking skin material from the UE marketplace or 3D modelling communities but they've made their own and the way light shines through it and highlights the edges red (like when you hold a torch behind your hand and turn it on) is like nothing I've ever seen before.

Then other things that might seem simple but for some reason is overlooked in lots of current games. It had really tight animation blending where the lerping wasn't obvious and they expertly utilised Unreal's level streaming system. It's a shame the game wasn't received well in the end and Glen Schofield quit because they had a really solid base to work off.

Yeah, it was hard not to notice just how fantastic the character models looked. I have seen nice looking games and graphics but this game is just something else. Hopefully this is the future of gaming and it’s this way in more and more games.

I was put off with playing this initially, mainly due to a combination of it looking a bit average and my dislike of the main character actor. Dropped a couple of hours into it this arvo and it's almost identical to playing Dead Space. My earlier post mentioned not being a fan of the melee heavy aspect of the game but the way it's combined with the dodge and range weapon is pretty cool.

The lack of map/objective tracking is already shitting me though.

Being super linear helps without the need of a map though. Except when you find the occasional fork and you don't know if you've found a hidden area or about to progress the story.

That's precisely where I realised that I needed the map. 😂

Wandered off and had no idea where I was and found a "secret room", so I'm a bit wary of exploring without the map now coz I don't want to miss a secret.

Okay finished it this morning.

Glad it was a shortish game as it got a bit tedious towards the end. Dead Space (DS) was fun in that it gave you a novel way to kill the enemies in aiming for their limbs, the enemies in this game were straight up bullet sponges. Also the entire "climb up here, oh no the platform I've climbed all the way to the top of has collapsed when I was almost there now I must find a new way up" story line is so weak. Probably didn't help that I played the DS remaster only 6 months back honestly.

Worth playing, however completely unsurprised it didn't too too well.

I thought this game did some pretty impressive stuff with tech. The skin material for example is the best I've ever seen outside of something like Reallusion's SkinGen for Character Creator which isn't really optimised for games.

Since Glen Schofield is no longer associated with the studio he has said some pretty scathing things about the publisher and development. Maybe it's just excuses as the game didn't get the reception he wanted but he is after all pretty experienced.
