If I may ask, you're a little bit older than most probably are? (im 36 by the way)

was there any obscure guys, the ones who were around for 2 - 5 years who could have dominated had there bodies held up?

Ryan Harris is the first one to come to mind.. bloke could genuinely do it all. Body held together like duct tape at the end
Bruce Reid is one that comes to mind. Probably as tall as Joel Garner but a left hander….and as many back injuries as Scott Gumbleton.
Reckon he took 7 for 1 in one spell. Wikipedia says he was the player of the series I. The ‘91 Ashes (27 wickets at 16 in 4 tests)
Not in the same league as the others mentioned but definitely a “what if he had a good run with injuries” guy

Also the worst batter ever…I’m sure it’s on YouTube somewhere but he once played out a maiden in the 50th over when we needed 2 runs to win 😆

Terry Alderman is an interesting player.
‘81 Ashes took 42 wickets (in a horror tour for us)
Did his bowling shoulder tackling a drunk Pom in the fist test of the ‘83 Ashes in Australia that cost him at least 12 months and cost him his pace/zip.
‘89 Ashes was the best wicket to wicket swing bowling I have seen (not very quick by then…probably 130kmph)
Two series of 40+ wickets in England…wonder what he would have done in’85 if he hadn’t taken the South African blood money.
170 wickets at 27 from 41 tests. Not exactly obscure, but what sort of record could have he had if not for 2 moments of madness

I saw Ajit Agarkar put on the best display of swing bowling I've ever witnessed live in Adelaide in the 03/04 tour. It was a game where Ponting and Dravid scored double tons and VVS scored 150 odd.

The match was quite evenly poised after the first innings where both sides made 500+ with a draw looking likely, Ajit made the ball sing and ripped through us with a 6-for to give India a chance which they took.

Reid was brilliant, would be an all time great if his body held up

Agree with the sentiments about the Indian bowling but some of our guys are also horribly out of touch. How long can you carry all of Smith, Buschange, Head and Marsh doing two fifths of stuff all and all 30+?

For me, it’s time to move on from Marnus. Get Ollie Davies in to change up the age profile of the squad.

Ollie Davies is currently lucky to still be in the NSW side let alone test side. You could drive a semi trailer between his bat and pad. Marsh in fairness has been in form before today. Smith got a good one first up. It happens.

Smith has runs on the board over the years to hold his spot, marsh is in because green isn’t fit so where does that leave Head and especially Marnus who I was suggesting needs to go.

Ollie might have flaws but he’s averaging 45 so far in his career and was in the top run scorers last year. Most of the other guys banging down the door at state level are all 30+ so I made the suggestion based off age profile but I would be happy with literally anyone but Marnus right now.

Marsh was probably our best bat last summer. If Green were fit he'd be opening with Ussie.

I'm not throwing the baby out with the bathwater yet but I don't mind if Marnus and Head get dropped this series if their poor form continues. If either get dropped I'd be moving McSweeney to 4/5 and bringing in an opener though. If both get dropped then Inglis keeps and Carey bats 5.

I think that’s a reasonable take, I think there’s room for both Carey and Inglis but I would love to see them just back McSweeney in for all 5 tests and if a tough call has to be made it’s Marnus (assuming he doesn’t perform)

I think Marnus holds the record for the bat who has had most catches dropped during his innings for his first 20 tests which massively inflated his numbers.

What I do love though, is seeing bowlers dictate a test and not the bats for a change. Very spicy.

Some of the older blokes at our club had to face Malcom Marshall early eighties in sub district cricket.
They would have some amazing stories.
(On and off the field 😉)
Found this article talking about his stint

This is why it was stupid to give Warner a farewell season last year. They carried him through the Ashes then gave him 5 more tests when they could have been giving the likes of a youngish Renshaw a decent run at it.

Great read that, thanks for sharing

I think they come up against Warney at some point (against Moorabbin as well)...although he was probably more interested in footy at that point. From memory they said he was more of a batter who bowled a few leggies but could rip them.

LOL
That was a Shane Watson level bad review by Marnus.
Come On Wtf GIF

I'm old enough to recall Marshall, Garner and a little later Ambrose, Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram all in their prime (though a little too young to recall prime Holding and Lillee).

This guy is right up there. And I agree on Steyn, the guy was brilliant.
I'm old enough to remember Lillee and Thomo and, on the other side Michael Holding and Andy Roberts in the great Windies sides captained by Clive Lloyd. I remember my father telling us about an up and coming young bowler from WA who used to run in from the boundary line!

This Agarkar spell is on Fox right now, showing a test mini on Fox and it's the 03/04 Adelaide test

However many years ago Maxwell plays a reverse sweep and gets out. Gets flamed.
Konstas brining the T20 shots to test cricket and looking like a national hero.
Just shows how marginal it can be and just how the selectors ****ed up Phill Hughs career .
Certainly entertaining.
