But but but Abbott started it. MUUUUUUUUUUUUM
The fact is, the standard of public commentary both between and about politicians declined markedly between 2010 and 2013. Some would say earlier even, but there was an appreciable and sharp decline from 2010 onwards. That was reflective of the tenterhooks and precipice that the political climate lay on once we had such an evenly balanced parliament.

Was that Abbott's fault solely? No, of course not. But as Opposition Leader at the time (along with Hockey and Pyne especially as sidekicks), he has to shoulder a decent proportion of the blame. Not for a second does this mitigate Gillard and co. in their shortcomings in this regard either.

Gillard was subjected to some shocking media behaviour- witness that dickhead radio DJ in Perth who taunted her about her partner for just one example. And now Abbott is copping it too. What's happened recently with the excesses of the coverage of Abbott isn't okay, and nor should it be written off as such because of what happened when he was in opposition.

Pointing out that it is a continuation of a sorry theme is not deflection or an excuse, however- it is fact.

The media on either side are grubby and have many questions to answer about their conduct. Or at least, they should, but they probably won't.

No need for inverted commas there, but personal attacks, like the shite directed to her husband, have nothing to do with her ability or otherwise as PM. Just like they don't for Abbott, or for Hird. But go ahead, keep picking and choosing what's acceptable based on your personal biases. Just don't bother complaining next time some bottom feeder like Wilson goes after Hird out of context. Or when some two-bit hack at News Ltd puts in a cheap shot about Gillard.

The inverted commas were for it being a quote. Ok, so when Gillard's partner was being attacked, or her father, or her personally by News Ltd and you attacked News Ltd for the Essendon stuff but sat quietly when all that happened to Gillard, how is that different?

What? Your post makes literally no sense.

News Ltd haven't ever cried foul about being criticised, so I've never had any reason to call them grubby hypocrits.

You know your whole position has morphed from it being about Fairfax complaining about being attacked by News Ltd into this current debate about when it is acceptable or not for the media to attack individuals.

What?

I called Fairfax a pack of campaigners for their slander of Essendon and Hockey and their character assassination of the Abbott family. You and others cried foul about how it's fine to abuse Abbott because Gillard was abused as well.

You really can't see how ****ing moronic your position is?

Nope...

A bit ****ing rich, given you're content to ignore the stink of corruption wafting around the highest offices in the land and pretend it's nothing but an attack on poor young Bridget.

This is every bit as legitimate a story as the AWU slush fund business from way back (or, say, concerns about Therese Rein's business dealings), if not more, given it directly impacts current politics and policy

It's a world away though from the bollocks about Mathieson (apart from very marginal issues with his use of public assets) or Papa Gillard, which had about as much relevance as, say, that saga about Abbott's maybe/maybe-not son. To suggest it's even vaguely comparable to the press going after Tanya Hird though is a pathetic attempt at playing to the sympathies of this forum.

yaco55 are things as bad in HK as the press is making them out to be?

Absolutely not. Spent the previous week in thailand ( just as this started ) and it was the number 1,2,3 story on Al Jazeera,BBC World and Fox News. There are some traffic diversions but it is 100% safe. I have no idea why these people are protesting - HK is a great city with abundant opportunities and freedoms. Think its a case of young people having little understanding of the world.

Because maintaining those freedoms requires vigilance, and letting the mainland government do whatever they want is not that.

A typical ill-informed comment who has no experience of Hong Kong. Hong Kongers have all the freedom in the world - Free press, free education, freedom of speech - My experience is that they have more freedoms than in Australia.

Life is good in HK. You are exactly right. Freedom wise, there is little to no difference between Hong Kong and Australia. I honestly have no idea what they are protesting about.

Off topic how long have you been living in HK?

Now. And they would like to maintain those in the face of a Chinese government that has shown it is intent on taking over control of the governance of HK, despite promises to the contrary. As for the snide insult, elections and democratisation happen to be central to what I do for a living.

The Chinese government have flagged their intention to essentially rig the upcoming HK elections. The people of HK are entitled to kick up a stink about that.
