Well now that there is a 2 week self isolation policy in place from people landing from overseas, I'm in a pickle. 2 week south African trip over the school holidays now means that I'd have to take 2 weeks leave once I return from south Africa. What I have to work out is if self isolation considered sick leave?

I'd imagine yes.

It seems to vary. My workplace has said I could take annual leave, personal leave or just "work from home" during a quarantine period. My partner's workplace is meaner and has said that if you aren't sick you have to take annual leave and if you don't have enough accrued, then unpaid leave. Best to ask what they're going to make you do before you go.

same boat here. due to go to Fiji on the 25th of April. except I'm a DH and didn't get my travel insurance until mid Feb.

Been told I'm only covered if the flights to fiji are cancelled or Fiji won't let me in due to restrictions.

But seriously, I have a trip booked to the US for late October and I'm not sure if this is going to be settled by then. I'll wait till July/August to make my decision.

Do not like your chances on two fronts. Trump actually letting people in and our borders being opened within 6 months.

Yeah even if we are allowed to fly we're going to cancel. October 2021 looks a little better!

We are avid campers, we try to get out most school holidays ECT but the appeal of a weekender is sullied by the prospect of putting the tent up and down with all its attached trappings. (Foot pump air bed in looking at you)

We have settled upon the notion of getting a camper trailer.. you know the wind up roof, pop out bed ends, kitchen and couches in the centre.

Reliably told you can arrive and be set up stoking the fire in 20 mins.

Probably looking at the Jayco eagle or hawk, 2nd hand, maybe looking at a budget 15 - 20k absolute max.

Does anyone have experience? Own one? Know the ins and outs?

It seems easy til you start reading about towijg capacity, electric brakes, Anderson plugs, deep cycle batteries, 3 phase fridges ....then the worry of worn canvas , wheel bearings.. god knows what else I don't know that I'm looking for.

You can go private sale and use your instinct on identifying the fastidious owner who cared for it muchly....and has added all the mod cons

Or go the dealer, pay 2-4 grand more for the supposed peace of mind of a 3 month warranty...but knowing it's been serviced and dealer checked.

Guess it's no diff to a car really.

Anyhow, anyone with knowledge?

Scenes around Seville. Seville was very quiet.

Bombers beat Adelaide while I was away. I think Essendon wins about 85% of the time when I am away.

anyone got any darwin experience?

have ten days there next year, trying to figure out a rough itinerary

from what i can tell kakadu might be the thing we miss if we dont want to explode the budget.

are Litchfield and Katherine gorge valid substitutes?

is it possible to get to the tiwi with the kids to give them some indigenous learnings ?

I used to live there mate! I know it well.

Katherine gorge is about 300km out of Darwin. There is a really nice spot nearby called Mataranka hot springs. You’d need to stay in Katherine. Check out Humpty Doo on the way.

LichfieldPark is a good spot.

Howard Springs/ Berry springs are not far from Darwin and have greatwater halls.

jim Jim and Twin falls are food spots.

I’d recommend you go on late May/ early June as it is nice and cool as the humidity drops off.

Mindle beach market for paw paw salad and pho while you watch the sunset.

perfect!!

we really want to camp a little bit but obv cant take tents with us, reckon theres places to hire tents? I guess you could always get a kmart burner for a week..

was thinking of hanging in darwin a few days, especially on the night market days - drive down to Litchfield, stay at dundee beach/crab claw island, do some fishing, then further down to katherine gorge, then return to darwin for a couple more days - maybe tiwi

is that about a ten day thing?

hesitant on the whole kakadu thing cause we wont have a 4wd (so you miss the best bits) and tours are mega expensive

perhaps the mary river wetlends might be the substitute

Ok, I missed this as I was busy but allow me to indulge myself while I reminisce for a bit and hopefully give you a few ideas. I used to camp on the Daly River as a kid. This was in the mid 80's and culling had only just finished so there were a lot less salt water crocs around. Even still, you'd go out at night and shine a torch and you could see the reflections of the eyes across the other side of the river bank! Probably (hopefully) fresh water crocs but a few people had been taken trying to cross the crossing in the wet season.
We also used to go camping on the Wildman river in Kakadu and this is where a lot of Barramundi were caught from our tinnie. Not as nice and full of crocs so no swimming. Kakadu has some nice spots.
We also did a lot of camping near Katherine Gorge which is a beautiful spot. There are lots of places nearby with the sort of gentle rapids that kids love with a tyre tube or lilo. We used to fish for freshwater prawns and Barra.
I never made it to Bathurst island but my Dad used to go there for work as a magistrate. He loved it. Great fishing and he had a great love of the indigenous community.
Adelaide River is on the way to Katherine and has a good cruise where you will see a lot of crocs. They even feed them and have them jumping out of the water. Only 100kms out of Darwin.
Darwin is really battling these days now that the gas plant has been built. It is very quiet and a lot of businesses are closed in the CBD. Cullen bay has some good restaurants and was actually mangroves when I live there. The Marina has some great restaurants and there is a wave pool that is pretty popular. There is also some second world war museums that are worth a look but might bore the kids silly.
Unfortunately you will see no doubt come across drunken locals which can be a bit confronting but you need to be ready for it.

Are you familiar with Dundee beach? Bout an hour from Darwin around the Litchfield loop, was thinking of camping there, the Mary river wetlands and nitmiluk no near the gorge. Fun times!

My only concern is arriving at 1am and the after dark locals concern

I'm not actually. I have a brother who still lives up there so I might see if he can give me some ideas. They do a lot of camping.

We are thinking of popping into the local kmart, spend a coupla hunge on a tent and what not, maybe leave it with some locals when we leave, or backpackers who whoever wants it, oppy.

One off cost will house us for a week but only cost less than a night in a hotel, plus campings funner anyway

So my bro has some suggestions for you. June is almost the perfect time (July/August). You’ll get into Kakadu and all the off tracks, Jim Jim Falls, Gunlom Falls, all those. Litchfield / Batchelor which is just a day trip but you can camp out there too.

also, said Dundee beach is good. You can hire a boat there if you want to go fishing.
