Just earlier in the Essendon v. Richmond game, Hocking ran 20 metres and got tackled and dropped the ball, yet no free kick! Essendon went straight on to kick a goal. This dropping the ball while getting tackled rarely gets payed and this frustrates me.

Also, players that get first to the ball are also pinged way too much for simply getting to the ball first. A player can dive on the footy in desperation, then have players jump on him, and he can get pinged for holding the ball, even though there was no prior opportunity and an attempt cannot be possibly made..

Thoughts?

Not a fan of the player getting pinged when they're the ones trying to make the play. Might as well have everyone surround the ball and wait for a fool to grab it then just tackle him.

I must have missed the announcement, but it appears this rule has been eliminated by the AFL to improve TV appeal and ease the pressure on umpires.

Observations are form the season not just tonight, which was particularly poor

You need to learn about the game before complaining about rules. You need to tackle someone to earn a free kick.

What about when Maric got spun around in a cirle in tackle. And the same happened when martin got tackled. I thought that if you got spun 360 in a tackle it was a free. But i'm not complaining.

He ran maybe 6-8 metres so don't get carried away. I don't think the tackle really stuck anyway.

So incorrect disposal then? Hocking neither handballed or kicked the ball, if by your definition he got partially tackled, and then drops the ball, it's dropping the ball?

3 free kicks could have been paid out of that one incident and the umpire paid neither!!

The free kick against Maric when Stanton pinned him to the ground was also a shocker. In the end it was Stanton who was actually holding the ball.

This was the worst. Plus a 50 metre penalty and almost certain goal. Woeful umpiring Maric had every right to be livid

It's not umpire bashing, it's rule bashing.

So what is your point?

This is the only game in the world where there is not an ounce of respect for the officials.

Union, League, Soccer - one bloke is in charge, and his decision is final.

Our game with it's 586 rules is a slagfest.

Just sayin'

Personally I am more pissed off with the fact that we have seen about 5 years worth of blatant throws in only 7.5 rounds of footy.

A ball gets knocked out of the carrying players hand all the time. You have to tackle and properly to be given holding the ball or incorrect disposal

Complaning about umpiring it never gets old.

Not wrong, its a bloody joke. To make it worse they will allow 9 throws and on the 10th some poor bastard will get done for illegal disposal... it's just like WTF? May as well have another rule change, the AFL don't do it enough. The only sport in the world where the players, coaches and fans don't even know what the rules are.

As a fan of both football (soccer) and footy i can tell you the players give the umpires a lot more respect in AFL than they do to the officials in football. When it comes to fans, there is always umpires bashing due to the passion. The reason sports are billio n dollar industries is because the fans love it so much and get involved.

For mine, i dont like the current holding the ball/ incorrect disposal rules. I also dont like the way the AFL changes rules so much. For mine it should be simple, if you have prior opportunity and u dont kick or handball it should be a free, whether or not its knocked out by an opposition player or not. Dragging the ball in free can be so frustrating when you see hard tough players putting their bodies on the line to be penalised.

The ball wasn't knocked out of his hands, you need to go re-watch the vision, he got tackled, and dropped the ball, he didn't get a hand on it, a foot, he got nada.

It's either

A) Holding the ball
B) Dropping the ball
C) Incorrect disposal

Take ya pick.

And that Maric decision was a disgrace, Maric was getting to his feet before the ump even blew his whistle and the maggot still calls holding the ball.

My original thought was Hocking was very lucky but the replay clearly showed that the tackle did not stick. Did not even have a hold of him when the ball was dislodged.

Maric free kick, absolutely bull.

I don't think so. hocking collided with the player and the ball spilt free. He was never actually tackled.

Play on. Correct decision.

I agree the Maric one was frustrating, but also consistent with how the game has been umpired for many years now.

Mate stop being so biased, the ball came out of his hands whilst he was falling to the ground from the tackle, as I said, take your pick as to which interpretation you want to implement and each one would have suited.
