The Jumper Debate

Should we wear the traditional fitzroy jumpers for our melbourne based games?

What sought of things about the jumper were said?

There was almost unanimous condemnation of the white clash strip.

The response from the board was that new jumper designs are locked in for 2 years by the AFL, so we are stuck with it for next year at the very least. They also said that a poll on the website showed alot of support for the strip. So who knows what will happen there.

The rest of the debate seemed to focus mainly on the Fitzroy jumper.

Some people want it worn for every Melbourne game, some want it used once or twice a year, and others don't want it worn outside of heritage round events (cycling between Bears and Fitzroy).

One woman seemed to indicate that wearing it for every Melbourne game would re-ignite the Bears vs Fitzroy stoushes that happened in the early days of the Brisbane Lions.

Alot of people had different opinions, and all of them were valid.

I really don't know exactly where I personally stand on this issue, there are pros and cons for each suggestion.

If I had to decide, I'd probably go with a system where a Bears jumper is worn in Brisbane as a clash jumper only, and the Fitzroy strip is worn once in Melbourne as a clash jumper only. If there is no clash, the regular Lions Jumper must be worn.

Thanks for that BrownDog:thumbsu:

I can see where you are coming from. I guess what makes this so hard is that no matter what the club decide we are going to have a group of supporters angry at the decision.

Sounds like the crowd is a pretty good indication of what all Lions supporters think with everyone being on a different side to this issue. It will be interesting to see what the final decision is.

Very good point lionbear. I personally don't really mind which way we go but plenty of people obviously do. Chances are that a decision will be made that no-one is happy with!

What annoys me about this issue is the anger that seems to be boiling under the surface.

My path to being a Brisbane Lions supporter came from being a Bears supporter. I get a kick out of seeing a Bears jumper get worn on occassion, but I also got a kick from seeing the Fitzroy strip getting worn over the last few years.

Despite not being a Fitzroy supporter, I am proud to know that their history is now woven into the fabric of our merged club.

For some people to insinuate that massive tensions will arise (on all sides) depending on what decision is made in regards to the jumper issue is a little disturbing.

I agree with you 100% BrownDog, If I was to write my current stance on this issue I would word it basically the same as you:thumbsu:

I barrack for the Brisbane Lions. I think the only time a bears or fitzroy jersey should be worn is in heritage round.
I agree......I also think that at some time we have to let go with our other jumpers (both sides) and just wear the jumpers of the Brisbane Lions...thats who we are now.......IMO while we keep wearing one, the other is going to want theirs worn, (as I do, if Roys Jumper worn) and so it goes on....so lets just stick with our jumper of the present day (while never forgetting our respective history) and concentrate on winning games in the Brisbane Lions jumpers (home or away)....otherwise this debate will continue for ever more.....it really is the only solution, and time to bite the bullet (so to speak) and to make a decision to take our team into the future...

While I agree with much of what you are saying MacMum, the bolded parts are a bit baffling, because it seems to imply that those who hold contrary views aren't also interested in the team's future or winning games.

There really is no crystal clear obvious solution, and attending the AGM was a bit of an eye opener that helped me realise that.

We need to accept that as a merged club, there are many paths that led people to supporting the club, and their feelings are also valid.

I'll do agree though that it is important that we continue to forge our identity as the Brisbane Lions and wearing the regular Lions jersey as often as possible is central to that. The urine stained monstrosity on the other hand....

I see your point...wasn't meant to imply that, definately not, so sorry if that was how it was taken.....no intention to offend anyone.....I guess I was trying to say I just want to look forward, and not keep having these discussions....so that we can all be as one ... but I might just shutup, before I write something else that offends .......as I said, not intended too....duly chastised TBD

Here is a hypothetical jumper question for Bears supporters?

If it was announced next week that the Fitzroy jumper will be worn once a year and the Bears jumper would also be used once a year, so 2 games in our heritage jumper, what would former Bears supporters want to see?

A. The original Maroon Triangle jumper (Used in our 1st game)
B. The Clash Yellow Triangle jumper (Used against Hawthorn and as an Away jumper in 91)
C. The final Maroon V Jumper.

I hope the club can make a final decision on this either way in the next 2 or 3 weeks so we can move on and forget about arguing jumpers and just watch our team and cheer for them to win:cool:

C. It's the most represenative to me of all we acheived but also what we lost. It's the jumper we were wearing when we made the finals for the first ever time, the jumper Voss wore when winning his Brownlow.

Idealism at it's best I'm afraid.

I desperately try to avoide getting into this particular topic on here and have done well to date I think.

The jumper is representative of who we are. I'm fine with the odd 'showing where we came from' when deemed appropriate, BUT besides that? I want us to be US, not pander to one set of supporters over another. And like it or not, there is that going on in many different ways. Always has been and unfortunately 10 years on looks like there always will be.

:(

So BD,

you are saying , we are stuck with that white jumper for this coming season....
no way....

Yeah, even if the club wanted to change it, they can't.

Only thing that is allowed to be changed is sponsorship logos etc....

They were both ordinary IMO, but at least the yellow one wasn't soaked in urine.

I was going to say could we soak out the urine stain at least:D

Geelong have changed theres after one season, but they had a change of clothing sponsor so I would presume there would be a clause in the rule allowing that.

Found a couple of great designs by a poster on this thread: http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=376621&page=6

I reckon a Brisbane clash strip modelled on that Eagles design would be awesome. A maroon yoke (instead of the blue), a blue collar and sides (instead of the yellow) and the gold Lion instead of the Eagle. Shorts and socks could stay the same as in the first picture. :thumbsu:

The creator hasn't been online for a while, but if he does log on soon I will see if he could create the jumper I have described to see how it would look.

Maybe we should have a thread some time into next year where we all putforward some designs to (a) put our money where our mouths are, and (b) to at least show the club the type of deisgns that we like.

Agree that one's a bobby dazzler!

This is the design I had in mind. I combined the two jumpers that demon roadz did of the Lions and Eagles and added the shorts and socks he created. The number could be gold and the shorts and socks could be different but you get the general idea. It's a bit dodgy because I did it in Paint - it would be great to see the original creator fix it up in his program to see what it looks like. I would love to see us wearing something like this.

Would buy this in a microsecond. Gold number would be the go I reckon.

Maroon, blue, gold and white are such classy, workable colours. The fact that industry professionals came up with our current clash monstrosity is really astonishing.
