See the above discussion with bourbons. Apparently it wasn't in the game so it might not feature in the show.

At some point Riley would 'turn' and attack Ellie. Ellie's self-preservation instincts would kick in and after a struggle she kills Riley. Then she is faced with the huge question of what to do next. She believes she's infected so would be inclined to kill herself, like the option 1 they talked about. There's even greater motivation for her to do that than Henry after he kills his son, Sam. But we know she doesn't. Maybe they could fudge it by having Ellie knocked unconscious for long enough for her to realise her infection wasn't spreading.

You'd think she's distraught from killing her friend and passes out from drinking, wakes up still unconverted and figures it out.

Haven't played the game but pretty much knew the story.

I expected one of three scenes to come as the finale of this episode (or all of them):

1. Riley's "turn", Ellie forced to kill Riley in emotional battle. (Thought this may have been a 'last goodbye' shot and jump-scare - first person perspective as Ellie, kisses Riley, closes her eyes (fade to black), music fades to silence. "Zombie" roar, eyes open (Riley's face fills the whole screen), switch to wide shot to see Ellie wrestling Riley and screaming, wriggle free and grab the gun, shooting Riley, her screaming changing from fear/panic to despair/depression.

2. Ellie with the (now dead) body of Riley propped up against the counter, wrapping herself in Riley's lifeless arms, before turning the gun onto herself (switch to first person staring into the barrel), but lacks the willpower to pull the trigger, sees the bottle of alcohol and downs that instead, blacking out whilst still holding the gun.

(Post-credit)

3. Marlene (looking for Riley), finding the dead (turned) Riley, and the alive (but unconscious/wounded) Ellie, and taking Ellie.

Was an ok episode, but it's not a rewatchable. From memory I have watched episodes 1,2,3, 4 and 6 twice.

One thing I really like about this series is the color palette, it's visually very pleasing to me for some reason. And also the two leads are knocking it out of the park.

I also would like to find out how Marline found Ellie and chained her up instead of killing her when finding out she was infected. Maybe Marline found them both together with Riley dead and Ellie beside her figured it out that she was different (immune) and decided to chain her and find out for sure.

oh and Henry was Sams brother not son.
Yeah my assumption would be Marlene comes to grab Riley to ship her off to the other city and finds her dead, and Ellie bitten but immune.

I was thinking two teenage girls who had been drinking alcohol until the early hours might both fall asleep. Ellie later wakes up, surprised that she hasn't turned. She wakes Riley up, who has turned - and a frantic fight breaks loose.

Marlene comes looking for Riley because she hasn't shown up for her post. She kills Riley who is clearly infected but doesn't kill Ellie who shows no signs. A subsequent examination shows Ellie is bitten but there's enough time passed for it to arouse curiosity and to keep her prisoner rather than kill her.

Addendum to 1. In the ensuing struggle, Zombie blares through the speakers and obliterates your eardrum.

Addendum to 2. Ellie picks up the gun, pulls trigger. click, no bullets. Everyone breathes sigh of relief (although given this is as flashback we know ellie lives)

Is it written into lore that infected do not attack sleeping persons? Sam was infected and had Ellie there asleep ready to be eaten. But he instead sat up and waited for E to wake and engage, then attack.

Just on YouTube now and it’s made me wonder, does anyone who hasn’t played the games worry about getting spoilers for the second game on YouTube? The algorithm has just given me a few Game/Part II videos that completely spoil the game.

It’s really hard not to get those videos on YouTube if you’re googling the show.
I got a massive spoiler about early season 2 from a screen rant article that should have been totally unrelated based on title. Was very pissed off and will affect my viewing of the next episodes. Haven't watched anything last of us related on YouTube to avoid things popping up.

Enjoyed the episode. Simple yet effective. Sets the show up. Storytelling of the past. I just thought how does a 14 year old know what fascist is
A 14 year old at your local high school might not know it, but a 14 year old in a fedra run colony that's been chatting to fireflies would.

I think that's because Sam was deaf. He turned away from ellie while they slept so when he woke he wouldn't see her

I thoroughly enjoyed that episode. I know it didn't add much to the story considering it was a full episode, but that doesn't worry me. If the joel/ ellie episodes were being affected by these side plot episodes, there'd be a reason to complain. But it hasn't happened so far and the people making it have given no reason to think it will.

Oh btw, Mortal Kombat 2 is the best MK game, I remember playing it on the PC in the 90s, sharing a keyboard with my brother.

Epic
Yeah listened to the podcast for this ep, they went with MK2 coz they felt it was the best Mortal Kombat game.

They actually wanted to use it in the original game/DLC but licensing was too hard at that point, so created their own ripoff title.

would anyone here if transported into the mall setting perhaps avoid speaking loudly or playing accade games that create noise?
Or look in every room and shop before acting like it’s a free for all.
Riley had been living there for weeks to be fair, reasonable-ish assumption that it was clear.
