Not sure what the plan was in the 2nd half. The player changes were mostly defensive. It seemed like they were playing it like the middle game in tournament mode, defending the lead and hoping to make a scoring chance on the counter. The two goals were disappointing to concede although they were both excellent finishes.

Seemed to be practicing defending a lead in tournament mode, which I don’t mind. We almost played 6 at the back the last 20 minutes, but we sat too deep and invited them on.

Agree about sitting too deep, they were slicing us apart with their passing. It was actually enjoyable to watch, their control on the ball was way better.

I get trying a different defensive formation though I do think backing ourselves to beat them on the break and simply outscore the opposition has always been this team's strength. The problem was that once Foord, Vine and Raso were off, we just had Kerr isolated up front and not enough speed.

I still don't see the point of Crummer and surely we know what we're going to get with van Egmond and it's not good enough at this level.

Quite an enjoyable game . First half we went at them and they didn't like it . Vine was very good , Promising debut from Hunt , Raso did Raso things . I thought we lost the fluency in the 2nd half and Spain had us on the back foot for most of it . Kerr looked really tired towards the end (understandably) , but if he is going to practice scenarios during a game , maybe take Kerr off at half time . It will be interesting to see his team for the 3rd match , i would like to see Chidiac start . Must say i thought the commentary was a bit over the top , maybe that's just me .
I still think he more or less know his squad for the WC no matter what he says . Barring injuries of course .

Who's the massive poser, male commentator on Ch 10 who put on the faux Spanish accents during the last game? :tongueoutv1: It's painful, and the height of w@nkerness.
Martin Tyler doesn't do it, nor did the other main English guy who we heard on SBS. Despite claims by some of those posers, it's not correct or respectful, etc, etc,.

An English commentator called Robbie Thomson isn't it? I know he does a bit of A-Leauge Men's too and has been around for a few years now. He was on the ABC for a while doing some A-League games and other sports for radio at the same time as doing his commercial media jobs.

Can't say I really noticed the pronounciations of Spanish names but I did think he went on a bit too much on irrelevant stuff the other night - like when he talked about Barcelona's Woman's club side for about 3 minutes while the ball was going end to end.

I prefer Teo Pellizzeri's call. He seems to put in the right amount of knowledge about the teams and players as well as call the actual game properly, but there's probably people who can't stand him either.

I also quite like Grace Gill as a special commentator and I heard her recently calling an A League Women's game solo and thought she might turn out to be a pretty good main commentator.

The previous commentator who did if for years on Fox used to give me the irrits, and he sort of modelled his style on Martin Tyler, turning the call of game into a boring monologue of miscellaneous trivia - but I actually don't mind him when he does AFL games.

Simon Hill annoys me too.

Thanks. I'm not sure. I thought it was an Aussie, but I might be wrong. I'll see if he's on tonight.
There are a couple of Poms on Eurosport who do cycling, and they are way over the top. Rob Hatch is THE WORST, followed by Richard Kirby

I was referring to the commentry on 10 Bold.

Perhaps there were two different coverages of the game, because I saw earlier in the day on Monday that Teo Pellizzeri and Sarah Walsh were going to call the game and maybe they did it for the subscription service.

With Thomson, he has a strong english accent and what I notice was how ingrained he was into supporting the Matildas, but I don't think he's been in Australia more than a decade. I kind of wondered if he would be supporting Australia if we played England in a knockout game of the World Cup. The Irish sideline commentator was even more pro-Matildas with his call.

There was a bit of bias. Overall there tends to be a lack of perspective sometimes about the Matildas performances. While have come in for criticism by some of the studio panel during games in the past - when someone has a good game, its like they've always played well. Vine had a terrible game against Canberra in the last round of the A League (she was fantastic the week prior) and Arnold was in goal for West Ham when Chelsea put 7 past her the other week.

Thanks again. Yes, it was the last game on Ten Bold. I'll pay attention tonight.
Do any soccer commentators go crazy like many the over-the-top AFL commentators? Some of the footy radio guys seem to have a scream-off contest to outdo each other. I remember a few games on 3aw last year when Bruce Eva and Daniel Harford were shouting like WW3 had started and they were at ground zero of the first nukes going off.

Geez, what a yawnfest.

Cooney-Cross and Foord have shown a little bit of class and Gorry with that sweet strike but everything is so slow and stop/ start.

Just shows how much more Grant and Raso give you down that right side with pace.

Gustavsson would be very generous if he keeps Crummer on after half-time.

I wonder where Grant fits in when Carpenter returns, she is almost a Carpenter clone in the way she covers so much ground in attack and defense.

One negative was that the defenders lost the ball in challenges maybe 3 times in the last defensive line and put them in with a good chance of scoring against the keeper where Arnold did ok and Grant came back and blocked one.

The first half could have been fixed with better starting selections.

Hmm still more questions but I guess the results look good on paper . 3 quality goals . Still wonder why so few minutes for quite a few of the girls, especially when 3-0 up this game . Also Kerr finishing with a knee issue is not good tournament management for her .

Agree, would have taken Gorry and Kerr off straight after 3rd goal. Wheeler needs more time. I really don't get the obsession with Crummer.

Australia to play France in the final friendly before the World Cup at Marvel Stadium on 14 July 2023. Tickets on-sale from 17 March.

Excellent. Can't say we're not being tested against the best before the World Cup with this and the game against England.

Like Spain, France are another team with players withdrawing because of issues between players and coach. The great Wendie Renard saying she won't play for the national team. Be a shame not to see her in Australia.
