Gustavsson has announced the 23-person squad for the World Cup. Lydia Williams and Clare Polkinghorne will be playing in their fifth World Cup finals (albeit Williams is probably in the squad as a back-up keeper).

So focused on the World Cup we forgot that our girls have Olympic qualifying in just a couple of months time. All matches to be played in Perth.

The CommBank Matildas' path to the Paris 2024™ Olympic Games has been made clearer following today’s Official Draw of the Women's Olympic Football Tournament Paris 2024™ Asian Qualifiers Round 2 at AFC House in Kuala Lumpur.

Australia will host Chinese Taipei (world no.37), Philippines (world no. 49) and IR Iran (world no. 67) in a round-robin tournament with the matches to take place between 23 October – 1 November 2023.

CommBank Matildas’ Head Coach Tony Gustavsson said: “The Olympics hold a very special place in my heart as it was the first tournament I experienced with the CommBank Matildas in 2021. It was during the Tokyo Olympics that I was privileged to share an inspiring run with this group of players and also truly understand the unique qualities of this team and what they stand for.”

“To find out what our path to Paris 2024 looks like provides much welcome clarity as to the task at hand, and we are excited to begin our campaign on home soil with the support of our amazing fans.”

Divided into four pots according to their seeding, 12 teams were drawn into three groups of four nations. Each group will play a single round-robin format on three separate match days.

Four teams – the three group winners and the best-ranked runners-up – will then progress to Round 3 with two sets of home and away matches to decide who will represent the Asian Football Confederation in Pairs.

Reigning A-League Women Coach of the Year, Mark Torcaso, has been named as the head coach of the Philippines women's team, replacing Alen Stajcic, who resigned after the World Cup to take him the head coaching role at Perth Glory. Western United have confirmed that Torcaso and Andrew Durante will remain in their roles as the head coach and assistant coach of the Western United A-League Women's team.

US Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker said to reporters that plans remain for the next USWNT coach to be in place in time for a training camp in December. It's all gone a bit quiet after Vlatko Andonovski resigned as coach of the USWNT after the World Cup, regarding the rumours of Gustavsson being the preferred target for the USWNT.

Was there an actual award for Goal of the Tournament in the recent World Cup? When watching YouTube footage of Sam Kerr's goal against England one particular commentator mentions that he's not on the panel for the Goal of the Tournament award, which makes me think the award exists.

Linda Caicedo (Colombia) won it for her goal against Germany.

Let's be honest, it's all Robbie Thomson's commentary

Honestly think it's a fabulous goal, but it was a fan vote. Hyundai Goal of the Tournament it's called. 2nd Place was that strike from a long range set free kick by the Panama player Martha Cox against France. 0.5% between 1st and 2nd place.

There's also the open category Puskas award which FIFA are currently conducting, where Caicedo and Kerr are both nominated, which is for the best goal of 2023.

Gustavsson named his squad for the opening Olympics qualifiers, to be played in Perth. The squad is 22 players strong, with Australia slated to play Iran (26 October), the Philippines (29 October) and Chinese Taipei (1 November) in Group A. From the World Cup squad, Aivi Luik and Kyah Simon are omitted through injury, while U-23 captain Amy Sayer and Charlize Rule named to the squad. However, Rule is not eligible for the qualifiers and is included in the squad in a train-on/development squad capacity.

Six matches will be played across three different match days with the group winner joining the winners of groups B and C, as well as the best-ranked runners-up, in Round 3. Round 3 will take place on 24 and 28 February 2024, with the winners of the two home-and-away series progressing to the Olympics.

It's going to be the next coach that brings on the next generation, isn't it?

I haven't seen vision of it but I was on social media early this morning and saw a post said that Charlize Rule had saved a goal with a clearance off the goal line last night for Brighton, so she might be playing as a defender.

In the young Matildas they were playing her as an attacker but in the few games I saw her, she looked kind of lost in that role.

Ante Juric seemed to convert her to a right back for Sydney. She's quite tall for that role. Seems to be about the same height as Kennedy, so maybe in time she can be a central defender.

Absolutely no idea to break down an Iranian defence that isn't even that good. Cannot wait until Gustavsson pisses off and we get a decent coach. Sick of watching an Australian team that has no creativity.
