Article in yesterday's age by Melissa Ryan stating that Richmond were almost certain to enter into an 'alignment' with the Coburg -Fitzroy Lions. Apparently just waiting on final confirmation from the Tigers.

Could be interesting. What colours would they wear? Were would they play? (Please say Punt Rd - I understand that the conditions out there are shite) How would the coaching structure operate?

More importantly, as Coburg-Fitzroy had an administrator appointed this year, will it impose some kind of financial risk for us? As they are broke, do we take over ownership and/or liabilities? Will we have to put up with Phil Cleary?

Obviously it would be nice to have more details, but in a general sense I'm in favour.

The old Fitzroy jumper should be worn in my opinion, but play at Punt Road.

I'm sure we don't want him either ... but I reckon Collingwood might.

We'll trade Cleary for Didak. Joffa and Alf might actually go for that one.

TigerTank,

I read that the Fitzroy name and colours were going to be dropped from the new entity.
The team will be purely a Coburg Richmond side. I believe that Collingwood, in their merger with Williamstown, will be wearing the blue and gold of the seagulls for all games apart from the curtain raisers. I could be wrong with that but if not, the Tigers may do the same thing.

That's just what I read so I am not sure how much truth there is to it. If it is the case, it will be just another disappointment for the Fitzroy supporters who supported the VFL club. Of course, Richmond are under no obligation to continue on with the Fitzroy tradition and I wouldn't expect them too either.

By the way, sorry for popping into enemy territory. Just thought I would wish Sziller every luck and that I'm sure he will be a great acquisition. He doesn't have much pace, skill or flair but he makes up for it with determination, hardness at the ball and consistency. Personally I think salary cap congestion is the main reason why he was delisted. For someone to play all 22 games and then get the axe has to be considered unlucky.

That's correct Sainter . The remnants of the Fitzroy Football Club Ltd., the Fitzroy name and the Fitzroy colours have been dropped at Richmond's insistence. As a 1999 and 2000 member of Coburg-Fitzroy, I am very disappointed for myself and all the other Fitzroy supporters who supported the club, since the FFC Ltd. became involved. It was something to do when Brisbane wasn't playing in Melbourne. As a result Coburg-Fitzroy regularly attracted 4,000-5,000 people to each Home and Away game last year easily the best of any VFL club. Projections were that possibly 7,000-8,000 people could have ben attending Coburg-Fitzroy game's in Season 2001. All that will be lost now, to the VFL's detriment. It was the VFL administration that insisted that Coburg seek an alignment with an AFL club or be removed from the competition after 120 years, for breaches of their VFL licence. Coburg had little bargaining power as a result and had no choice, but to ditch Fitzroy....as I said before at Richmond's insistance. It is believed that Richmond wanted the Coburg City Oval as a summer training ground, as Punt Road was unavailable in summer due to cricket commitments.

Sainter/Roylion,

If what you are saying is true then I am disappointed too.

I can't see any harm at all in retaining some of Fitzroy's identity with the VFL club - if it is a Richmond decision to drop the Fitzroy element, I think it is a bad decision for Richmond.

On the other hand, I accept that Brisbane merged with Fitzroy and that the Richmond link with Old Fitzroy would be detrimental to Brisbane's Fitzroy connection. I can understand why the AFL and the Brisbane Lions would not like Richmond to "poach" Brisbane's territory.

But Brisbane had their chance and blew it - as it stands though, a Richmond-Coburg club with Fitzroy excluded looks like a messy proposition indeed.

It's a shame that the powers that be cannot allow a fitzroy into the 'new' VFL in their own right. If your crowd figures are correct then the would be close to viable.

For those who say Relocate, Merge or die is this not a fourth option - move lock stock and barrel into the VFL.

For those ot you with the vision of a 'national' AFL of say six teams in melbourne and six outside - why can't the 'unimportant' clubs move into the VFL ? If you disagree with that it means you want your cake and eat it too.

Sainter,

Of course I have no authority to grant or deny you access here, but my opinion is that you can 'pop into enemy territory' any time you like!

Unlike morons associated with other teams/boards I don't think anyone on this particular board minds representatives of other teams coming forward offering considered intelligent points on facets of the Richmond Football Club even if those comments are contrary. Objective discussion is always welcome and should be fostered as much as possible.

That is a bloody shame what happened to Coburg-Fitzroy. I enjoyed the atmosphere and the crowd at the C-F V Geelong VFL game at the Coburg City oval - I think it is a much better venue to watch football then boring Punt Rd. There is no definitive atmosphere at Punt Rd, I don't even give a *$$# looking at the old grandstands. No offense, but Punt Rd is a souless and artifical ground 'just look at all the crown casino' signs, and as a result, i hate going to watch Geelong play there in the VFL > I propose that all Geelong games against Richmond-Coburg be played at Shell Stadium.

A brilliant piece of hypocrisy G4E. You belittle Richmond about having a the Crown logo painted onto the roof of the Jack Dyer Stand and in the very same sentence refer to Geelong's ground by it's atificial sponsors name - Shell Stadium.

I also fail to see how the atmosphere could be any better down there in cultural Siberia.

I was going to jump onto the Geelong board to respond back but I forgot - you aren't important enough to get one!

haha buddy - AT LEAST WE STILL PLAY OUR HOME GAMES at our spirtual home, Richmond hasn't had one since that alcholic Jack Dyer was serving drinks behind the bar in Swan St in the 1950's - Ah the joys of beating Richmond (94 rnd 22, 95 prelim final)it doesn't get much better

There are a few older Richmond fans out there geelong4eva who have very happy memories of their team belting the !@#$ out of your mob in 1969, first semi final, 25.17.167 to 7.7.49. The Tigers kicked more in the first quarter than Geelong kicked during the whole game. Most Geelong fans left before half-time and I think half the players might have also. For all the !@#$ you throw at the Tigers, when was the last time your pack of handbaggers won a flag? You are probably not old enough to remember but it was 1963. At least Richmond memories only have to go back to 1980. If you're so smart, why ain't you rich? And If you're so smart, why don't you establish your own website like this one?
