The most amazing crowd of all time

This was another massive one - Didak got reported for bumping Heath Scotland, and that kicked off a brawl, and so the crowd was at fever pitch, and then the ump restarted play, and Carlton went forward and Eddie Betts kicked goal of the year.

Suffice to say, the Carlton supporters went nuts.

Essendon vs Sydney in round 21, 1996 was a "way above par" crowd. 69,237.

Especially considering the week before we played Collingwood in front of 51,057.

The Plugger factor.

I don't think there's been a guy in recent history who has drawn a crowd as well as Plugger. In the second half of the 90s we'd regularly draw 35k+ to the SCG. Our membership had a waiting list. He was huge (literally and figuratively).

The most atmospheric crowd I've ever been in was the 1990 Second Semi-Final between Essendon and Collingwood. Simply amazing crowd noise - I can remember being seated in the (Old) Southern Stand at about the 50 metre line towards the (Old) Ponsford Stand end. I can still see Peter Daicos spinning out of a pack at that end and snapping a goal. The entire Southern and Ponsford Stands went totally bananas, the roar was just mind blowing and it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. :thumbsu:

The most amazing crowd I experienced (living in Queensland, never been to Victoria) would be the A-League Grand Final between Brisbane Roar v Central Coast Mariners.

In AFL I would say the 2009 EF Lions v Carlton as the Lions came from 30 points down to win.

i got to the ground before 7am - the queue at the sydney rd gates end was back to the footpath. id suggest that by 8am the queue was so long that if you arrived after that you didnt get in.

Thanks for providing the link. Daicos 7 goals from 14 kicks against that great Carlton side was pretty impressive for a 19 year old. That Carlton backline may have been the greatest backline of all time. Hunter, Doull, Southby, Perovic and English. I remember the crowds lined up outside were incredible. Dad took us through the Carlton rooms which were empty bar a few officials and in to the ground before gates opened. It was a absolute cracker of a crowd.

Small crowd of 39 863 but the 1986 State of Origin Game WA v Vics remains one of the greatest crowd experiences in my life.

Last quarter there were 7 lead changes.

It was just before the Eagles came in and I think this game is why the Eages went in with such a following.

Rioli, Dermie, Peake, Weightman, Keene, Salmon, Diesel, Narkle, Leon Baker, Buckenara ...had some talent.

On the siren the crowd went up as one, it was simply an amazing game and had it all....hangers, smothers, hits.

Sort of game that you say thank **** I went.

:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

Agreed, greatest atmosphere I've ever been involved in. Standing on the terrace as well, southern wing. A couple of blokes next to me left when WA were 9 points down only for a hanging Macnish mark and goal plus a great Buckenara snap sent the crowd absolutely bonkers. From the bounce, Vic ruckman plam down to Brian Royle who was about to kick on goal when Wayne Blackwell dived on his boot and smothered. Just brilliant footy.

In terms of a Freo game, the collective ecstatic release at the conclusion of Freo-St Kilda 2005 was something to behold. The amount of noise at the 2006 final v Melbourns was also fantastic.

I was also there at Waverley in 1981 to see Collingwood-Essendon: I'd never seen anything like it.

Port verses Sturt in the 1976 Grand Final, Footy Park, 66-67,000 crowd, standing room only.
Port verses St. Kilda 2004 Prelim. Sure the stadium was actually shaking that night.

Not AFL, but the Australia World Cup Qualifier in Sydney when we beet Uruguay on penalties to go through was amazing.

Love the AFL crowds with the supporters opposing each other, but to be in a stadium with 86,000 people and 85,500 of them going for the same victorious team really was something I've never experienced before. Spine tingling, especially the National Anthem.

Only having been to subi, i cant quite comment on 'massive' crowds, but for mine, the 2009 game West Coast v Hawthorn will forever stick out in my memory. It was a horrible night, wind howling, rain pouring, and the eagles were a goal or two down at 3/4 time. Enter Nic Naitanui. 3 Goals in the last quarter, and the place was electric. Ive been to much bigger crowds, (there was only 31k there apparently, ive been to 36-40k games) but ive never felt an atmosphere like that. It was electric. :thumbsu:

A couple stick in my mind for different reasons.

The 99 prelim vs Ess - I remember Carlton being such huge underdogs that day that the the Blues fans gave standing ovation at quarter time just for being in front by a couple of goals at quarter time. Same again at half time. Never seen anything like that since. And the last qurter still gives me goose bumps.

The 2001 game vs Gee - the one where Milburn knocked out SOS. I most rabid crowd I have seen and the closest I've seen to the crowd jumping the fence to attack a player. 10 years on Milburn is still copping the boos from Blues fans.

I initially only put my thoughts down for AFL games. And still, 2002 Prelim is the best, however, the 2007 A-League GF @ Etihad was amazing. I got tickets with a few mates off ebay and unfortunately the seating was smack bang in the middle of the Adelaide Utd supporters (who had to be allowed into the stadium 2 hrs prior to kick-off and before public entry). Security wouldn't let us sit there as they'd already had trouble. So we stood near the same section and watched the 6-0 onslaught. The Utd fans were feral that night. I went and picked up a few beers from the beer prior to kickoff and had them deliberately knocked so they'd spill. There was a couple of punch-ons (1 almost right on top of us). But the most memorable part of the game was the chanting and cheering that went on. Truly amazing. AFL is fantastic, but the atmosphere at a big soccer game beats it hands down.

The loudest single cheer I've ever heard at a game was when Anthony Rocca kicked that 70m torp against Adelaide in the 2002 Prelim.

There were 88,000 people there, and being against an interstate side, it was very heavily weighted towards Collingwood. When he kicked the goal, the crowd exploded.

I agree VV. The roar for that goal was enourmous. The biggest roar I have experienced.

Second would be probably Micky Maguanes goals in 1994 when he took seven bouces.

Port verses Sturt in the 1976 Grand Final, Footy Park, 66-67,000 crowd, standing room only.
The '76 GF is legendary, not just because Sturt won in an upset, but the fact that the crowd spilled onto the playing arena (inside the fence, behind the boundary).

An enduring Footy Park memory for me was the 1984 SA vs Vic game (Kernahan kicked 10), going along with the primary school footy side and an official just opening a big gate and letting us all in. Officially a crowd of around 53k.

Adelaide Oval used to squeeze big numbers in back in the day.
The record was a crowd of 62,543 which attended the 1965 GF.

Noone has mentioned those classic state of origin games at Football Park.

You could feel the atmosphere from the television.

Both teams chocked full of stars.

South Aussies baying for Vic blood.:D

Absolutely brilliant stuff.

State Of Origin at it's best.

2004 Prelim was huge.

In recent years, a bit of weird one but the 2009 Round 8 Port vs Richmond game.

Where Tredders got us back in it in the last few minutes, the roar of the crowd was insane. One of the loudest I have ever heard, and the crowd was tiny that day only 20 something thousand from memory.

My fav small crowd atmosphere was when we beat West Coast for the first time in 10 years at Princes Park.

17k turned up but the atmosphere was like 70k.

I met Flea at the game who was in the outer.

He said that the game had an amazing atmosphere like a 70k crowd also.

LOL @me.
I remember getting 2 reserved seats.

I got there and they were all empty except for our 2.

Took my cuz along who was keen to go to a football match and he doesn't barrack for anyone.
Made him wear a Richmond head band HAHA McEnroe style.

LMAOOOOO.

North v Dogs in Round 22 1998 - 68k

That sized crowd between the two teams will bever be surpassed in H&A

Back in the 70s,a North game between Richmond would get 60k.

North had a bigger following back then.

Great thread. Lucky to support a big drawing team and have enjoyed other neutral games and finals/grand finals - many mentioned already.
On neutral games and this game may have already been discussed but nevertheless- I remember attending a Collingwood v Brisbane match at the dome back in 2003 perhaps when Bris were at the peak of their powers and the pies were building. Probably 50k, roof shut. Amazing. Think from memory, Collingwood won by under a kick. Great game and roar. The pies fans were feral - it was awesome

It will never happen!

But wouldn't it be great to see what kind of atmosphere would generate from a Grand Final where only the rank and file supporters of each club could attend.
