Review The most idiotic media call about Hawthorns rebuild

Who deserves the most ridicule about how Hawthorn has gone about the rebuild since three-peting?

But let’s not give a sucker an even break. Montagna’s an idiot !!!

I think it goes past him being a bit of an idiot with this call, into territory that paints him as a spiteful one who came at our coach off a long run for reasons best known to himself.

The only defense for Leigh is that his opinion maybe reflects his personal experience and the culture of relative failure at his own club. Maybe he's bitter after being toweled up by Sam and Hawthorn even when St.Kilda was at its most recent best.

The fact is that Mitchell had already been through one expedited rebuild as a player under Clarkson pre coaching our team. That had to count for at least something re: our current edition, given what a savvy player and hard worker he was.

Plus, Sam was at WC as a coach when they won a flag in 2018 after spending a year there as a player in 2107. So he's been around winning environments as a coach and player twice.

How far we rise this time remains up the air. But was it really reasonable to suggest that Mitchell would fail and be sacked, and that Hawthorn wouldn't make finals for ten years?

That's a fool's prediction even without taking into account Hawthorn's history of success or Sam's track record of achievement.

A week is a long time in football, and there are a LOT of weeks in a decade.

Purple's foolish call might have been the most visible, but this one is the most offensive and most unwarranted. There was less than little to no reality in it.

I think too you need to recruit the right people, and have the right people in place to help them. In our previous rebuilds we seem to look at character first, skills secondary in our early primary targets. In our rebuild, we targeted Will Day, Josh Weddle, Cam McKenzie and Jai Newcomb. All strong characters. We then surrounded them with players like Dylan Moore, Luke Breust, Jack Gunston and James Sicily. So I think we develop culture first, that then transitions well into our development.

North got badly burned by the JHF pick. In the top 2 of the most talented player in 2021. Traded out in 2022. Rumours of ice baths, home sickness ect. Just a waste of a pick. He was always a flight risk. Would have been better to have drafted some one like Mac Andrew, while a slow burn, is going to be an absolute jet. Seems to have that don’t quit attitude that North desperately needs currently.

We have a long history of picking based on character too, the #15 the most cut and dry example of this.

There was all kinds of nonsense being written about the club's decision afterwards, and it went on for years.

It proved to be the right choice, and nobody would change that. Not even the nay sayers screaming loudest after the fact.

We didn’t pick Hodgey on character. We picked him on his ability.

Leadership, character and ability.

It was said over and over, they saw traits in his character that the other two candidates for number one didn't have.

It proved to be correct too. Hodge was a natural leader with the ability to impose himself on a game by force of will and talent.

He said that we had absolutely no youth and the rebuild would take 10 years. Also said Sam would get sacked before he got a chance to even show if he could coach or not.

He also criticised us for getting “nothing” from the Mitchell and JOM trades and at the start of last year said that we were telling the world “we had no hope and are tanking”.

Then a few rounds into the 23 season he was calling us the most “irrelevant” team in the comp.

Did a complete 180 since then and rightly so but let’s not have short memories.

I cannot remember Saturdays game!

Hitler could be on a 'who is the worst out of this lot' list and Barrett would still win.
Who'd have thought Godwin's law could make it into this thread?
