The NBL and why has it gone to the dogs?

I just wanted to say I wonder if any of the people posting on here realize there is actually free to air tv coverage on One hd on friday night and sunday afternoon well there is on the Sunshine Coast but do agree with the fact that the NBL is run in an amateurish fashion and without american imports would have no chance of surviving as the lack of participation at junior levels is basically non existent I live in the Sunshine Coast and could not tell you where some basketball courts would be let alone if there is any sort of junior comp here I would say probably not as sports like rugby union and tennis are big here and I also feel basketball has died due to the fact even at junior levels you have a fairly good level of fitness and with the growing obesity epidemic amongst kids these days it's a sport that they would be more likely to move away from and at the top level lack of advertising and the fact that Australians always want things on the cheap is another reason for it's demise people might just have to be prepared to fork out a bit more for a ticket as they do in the states because of the smaller stadiums if they want the league to survive and unless a shit load more money is found it's probably on it's last season and would be unlikely to return

Wow okay. For future reference please try to use full-stops

And basketball is the 4th most participated sport by girls behind Swimming, Netball and Gymnastics whilst it's 6th most participated by boys behind Soccer, Swimming, AFL, Cricket and Tennis.

Over 200,000 aussie kids play basketball every year, not including Mens and Womens open age comps, which would increase the number even further.

It's not a lack of participation thats the issue, but the fact that the league has been poorly run, poorly funded, poorly advertised and produced poor quality of basketball, which no one wants to see when they can watch NBA all day for a couple of hundred bucks a year.

While it has huge participation rate at junior and senior levels in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne... and we have no team...

NBA rules incl 3 point line moved back to avoid 3 point shootouts,

Thats actually not too bad an idea, even a guy like Luke Nevil jacked up a trey because its effectively a "long two" by NBA standards

Also, make the shot clock 30 (or 35 NCAA style :D ) seconds per possession (but keep the 10 minute quarters) to improve quality of play on offence, the "fast forward roadrunner" offence for the quality of player in Australia lacks flow and takes out "playmaking" (in both offense and defense) in the Australian game.
Most the time players bring the ball up the court with 16 seconds left on the shotclock to set up an offence, and then they jack up a shot from anywhere (and not from any play in any playbook).
At the moment in the NBL, there are No "picks" for setting up specialist Jumpshooters, or clever set ups, just bring the ball up and 'jack it', and on D players just clog the keyway as a form of defence. <- Even I can coach and implement that strategy

When teams like Cairns struggle to even score 60 points a game it can't help. Many casuals will come back if they're entertained and low scoring spectacles that the Snakes have displayed in the last couple of seasons (they failed to get to 50 a couple of times last season) cannot help.

In terms of media coverage in Qld I couldn't see anything in the Friday Courier Mail (a by product of zero presence in the metro corridor), and we get the odd news story in the local news for the Crocs and Snakes, but I reckon the 2nd tier QBL comp gets more coverage. That said, there was barely a mention of Cameron Tregardh for example heading to play for Cairns or Melbourne or Stephen Weigh heading to Adelaide after they finished their commitments with the local team up here (Rockhampton Rockets, lost to Mackay Meteors in the QBL GF). (Curiously there was more of a mention regarding the women's point guard Nicole Romeo playing in the WNBL and tossing up whether to come back......)

The scheduling is also a bit dumb if you think about it. It's great that 10 are showing a game live on Sunday Afternoons (there's only so long they can shove Andrew Bolt down our throats), but last week that was competing with Bathurst which close to 2 Million viewers saw the finish of. This week there will probably be more watching the MotoGP and F1 on ONE which is on the same time as the Crocs-Wildcats game, shown on an hour's delay into the state where the match is played. Surely the administrators and the TV executives can pour through a schedule that may increase the potential viewership?

Melbourne Tigers will usually get an article in the HUN every week, but it's rarely anything more than a side column.

What you're talking about r.e. the TV schedule, it's all Channel 10. When the NBL originally struck the deal with 10, it was that there would be 2 live games a week on ONE HD + New Zealand Breakers games via satellite on Sky Sports or some sh*t (they were all shown on ONE HD) + a weekly show (Overtime I think it was called - hosted by Steve Carfino). Anyway the contract was a 5 year deal that would eventually see 3 live games a week + New Zealand Games + a weekly show for this year and the next two.

But the knob-heads at Channel 10 decided that ONE HD would no longer be a sport channel, but an 'entertainment' channel. So because of some bs regarding them changing programming, they were able to change the contract. They offered 3 games a week shown on 3 hour delay or get f**ked. The NBL had no choice but to take the 3 on delay. Before this season the NBL negotiated and finally got at least 1 game to be shown live but it had to be a regular Sunday afternoon slot of 1PM or something like that + another delay game on Friday night.

So basically the NBL had their hands tied this past two seasons. The decision by Channel 10 to change ONE HD was ridiculous. The live NBL + Overtime had received great ratings and the league was getting great advertisements for the season. With added exposure, advertisement and live sport, the NBL saw a huge growth during the 2010/11 season and saw one of the best GF series in recent times. Now if you want to watch the NBL, you have to sit through 10-year old re-runs of COPS until 9/10PM or wait til Sunday.

not solely nbl, but for some reason when teams are referred to (nbl and a league) they are referred to as such:

..."last night melbourne tigers defeated perth wildcats"

instead of

"last night the melbourne tigers defeated the perth wildcats".

often happens on SEN, teams referred to without "the". But when speaking about american sporting teams, they always throw in a "the".

for those who have a degree in linguistics or English, is it correct to use "the"?

Basketball is not about 'as high a score as possible'

Who here plays it and plays 'first to 7'? or 11? and who here takes 40 minutes to get to a win with a winning margin of 2?

Scoring should be hard

YES! And in the complete opposite, AFL commentators refer to teams as the GWS or the West Coast instead of the GWS Giants or the West Coast Eagles. Really gets up my goat. Anyway, thread back on track.

thanks for your support. ive been bangin on about this for some time and no one has agreed with me.

the west coast is interesting. its akin to saying "the melbourne"

'The' West Coast actually makes grammatical sense (although I don't say it that way, just sounds weird to me). 'The' GWS however makes absolutely no sense, and Gerard Healy is the main culprit of this. Shits me to no end.

Back on topic, the fact that Ten/One HD essentially left the NBL hanging has never sat well with me. Would like to see the ratings shows like COPS get compared to when the NBL occupied those timeslots.

TV time costs money.

Blame those paying the bills which are the NBL not the broadcasters.

OneHD as it is now with the premium USA sports you can't watch elsewhere is better than not having OneHD at all as it would have been as a pure sports channel.
