Sad to see the NBL slowly fade into obscurity over the years and I agree with a lot that has been said here, particularly the following factors:
- TV coverage
- Advertising/Marketing
- The fact that the NBA is now readily available to viewers. Will we follow a local league that is not the highest standard? Is it possible to follow both NBL and NBA these days?...The crossover between fans on this board is quite small.
- Involvement of the fans - need to give the general public a reason to follow the teams. NBL hasn't seemed to create a meaningful relationship with the public. Teams folding hasn't helped.
- Lack of money
Awful.

Got nothing on Chris Blakemore's chest.Who doesn't remember the funny names of Leeroy Loggins and David Stiff, Tony Ronaldson's chest,
Yeah, the 36ers have played the same songs since forever as well..."We will rock you", that country sounding one that starts of "We're the Adelaide 36ers..."At Tigers games, they still play music and sound effects from the 90's! It's extremely tacky and cheesy and they need to move on!
Awful.
Dunk comp died when Bret Rainbow left the league ...I remember that year where he robbed Calvin Talford & Mario Donaldson of the title.Involve fans in things like voting for the NBL All star teams, the dunk contest etc
It was an indictment on the league (and Earl himself) that Acie Earl came in and dominated - he was obviously overweight and out of shape but still couldn't be stopped. For me the NBL died when Acie Earl, Bennett Davison, James Smith and Kevin Brooks all left.
Yeah, you summed it up nicely there. Hopefully the NBL keeps heading in the right direction.Basically the league was run disgracefully between 2001-2009 and it may end up being the period that killed the game, hopefully not. They seem to be trying really hard to bring the league up to scratch and they are getting there. It basically boils down to money. They're isn't enough money that the clubs are sustainable enough, so the salary cap isn't increased, so better players won't come because the money is shit, so people don't watch because the standard isn't great, and clubs don't make money. It's a vicious cycle.
I'd like to see them go maybe a couple of seasons as an 8 team league, try and get it as sustainable as possible. Then look at bringing a team in from Brisbane, and perhaps a second Melbourne team. Just need to keep slowly building and hopefully they can return to the glory days.
