We used to get one game a round on TV and the grand final wasn't on until 1977. Don't hear anyone pining for those 'traditions'.

Afl has post game entertainment with fireworks, but the hmmered corporates dont hang around. Plenty of peope sho cant get a ticket come in, and several of those leave before the winning team is re presented.

why is the NRL atmosphere better ? Theres a lot more fans and a lot less corporates for a start.

Personally Id trade off a night afl grand final with the participating clubs given first dibs on 50k tickets

I have a suspicion (pure conjecture, I swear) that people are going to get absolutely shitfaced on grand final day, no matter what time it's on at. Do you think everyone stops drinking at 5.30 because the game is over by then?

Its not about the stop time (of course people will keep drinking no matter what time it finishes), it's about the start time ie. I think people start drinking around the time that the GF starts. So ironically I reckon moving it to night time would actually mean most people would get less pissed as they haven't been 'on it' literally all day.

I reckon it's time to give it a go. And NOT because thugby league does it, but because it would be an even more spectacular spectacle at night, and would rate its arse off.

The dumbest reason in history not to change something is that 'it's the way it's always been done'.

It should be trialed, at the very least.
please explain to me why is would be more "spectacular", is this so we can have fireworks at the end of the game? Is that the reason?

Why should we follow what other sports do? The reason the superbowl, nrl, world cup final etc are at night are tv ratings plain and simple. So if it is changed make no mistake the reason will not be because it is more spectacular but because of tv ratings. Once they change it to night the next thing will be to change it to sunday night as guess what, that is more prime time than Saturday night.

The reason why the NRL rate well is because it's a Sunday night more so than it's just at night. Saturday is a blackhole for ratings, putting the telecast on a Saturday night will make little diference to the ratings.

If you include the areas that are not included in the rating (predominantly AFL regions) and discount the areas that are double counted (predominantly NRL regions) than I not even sure if the NRL had more viewers anyway.

5 - 5.30pm best start time. Half the crowd spends the day looking into the sun at present.
Late enough to for decent half time entertainment.
8pm finish not too late for kids.

For kids over 8, one night late shouldn't matter. I use to stay up for the brownlow at that age.

For kids under 8, they usually watch 5 minutes, get bored and go do something else.

I think twilight is ideal. The Spectacle would be amazing and we should embrace the notion of showcasing the best two teams in primetime.

I really hate when people say, "It's bad for families!"

It's not 1950.

Yep, that one has me mystified as well. I guess this is the contemporary "football supporter", they seem to need the fireworks, singers, and all the other shit because they don't understand football all that much and need other things to occupy their feeble minds. "Ooooh, look at the pretty lights!!!!!"

I prefer watching football at night anyway without any of those things, especially at the ground.

How could you possible think that... Saturday night games outrate Saturday afternoon games the entire season.

I am the complete opposite. The less lights involved the better.

Yeah, **** having it at night. Bad enough the preliminary finals are now.
The atmosphere at the 1994 preliminary final between North and Geelong and also 1999 Essendon and Carlton were incredible. Both Saturday arvo day finals at the G.
I miss so many of the finals not being in the arvo. Best time for a football game.
Could not care less of tv ratings getting a few hundred thousand more at night. Not worth changing a great tradition for that. If it ain't broken, don't fix it.
Really enjoyed the rare day finals at the G in recent years of the last three elimination finals. Carlton v Essendon, Richmond v Carlton and Richmond v North. The build up to those games and atmosphere in the day is the special part of September arvo day finals at the G. Should be more of it, not less. Lets get at least one more of the preliminary finals back in the day.

Exactly. Nothing better than walking to the G for a big final on a sunny spring afternoon. I also love watching the premiers hoist the cup as the sun goes down on the day and the season.

They should both be on Saturday if they are played at different venues, with one in the arvo and the other at night. Thus used to be the case before the AFL made the Fri Night prelim a permanent fixture in 2004 regardless of the prelim venues.

Every time they change the frickin schedule it fracks with my church going. ******* atheist scum. heathen campaigners the lot of 'em. How can one ******* worship our loving ******* Jesus ******* Christ AND follow the frickin' football. campaigners!

I know I'm not supposed to but...

LOL
