Yes really. Remember if not for the interchange debacle we would’ve beaten Sydney and this conversation would be irrelevant or you’d be saying ahhhh **** we shouldn’t have beaten Sydney. Come on. I am 100% certain you would’ve taken 4 or 5 wins last year even over finishing bottom again. Anyway I just think we all need to move on. It’s so irrelevant. I want a club that wins, not one that either can’t win (which unfortunately we have at the moment) or tanks. And tanking disgusts me.

If I could go back in time to any date it would August 25th 2023. I would travel to Hobart and find the hotel North are staying at. I would infiltrate the kitchen and make sure there's something not quite right about the dinner that is served that night. Then, I would vanish out the back door for a cigarette to contemplate the miracle I have just performed.
You're a bit soft, I personally would have broken all 46 of their legs with a baseball bat if that was what it would have took.

Karma always comes back to bite you in the arse. The only way we will ever stop the what ifs is if we become a top 4 side and contender in the next 5-10 years.
Lol I'm loving all the good karma and fortune we're getting for say delisting Thomas, not tanking, donating Richmond our picks and taking one of the worst 200cm players of all time off their list.

yerh but we didn’t win, soo it is relevant when we were sitting last on the ladder with 1 game to go. would of rather have finished bottom and get bette access to the top talent in the draft. i too want a club that wins with players who know how to win. reid is one of them. we lost 20 games in a row last year, we didn’t need to tank to lose that game.

Well clearly we did cos we won 🤷🏻‍♀️

The media loves to push it, and the general public lap it up, but there is no single saviour at footy clubs, regardless of how good the player is.

Geelong was just fine once Gary Ablett Jr left
Hawthorn didn't fall apart without Lance Franklin
GWS haven't bottomed out since Jeremy Cameron left
Adelaide made a Grand Final 2 years after Dangerfield left

Harley Reid is a gun, and I'd love him in North colours. I'm not lamenting the fact we don't have him and it's cringeworthy reading posts by North fans in particular who are heartbroken that he isn't in North colours.

A team of 23 guys knowing and playing their role within a system and game plan that is effective is what wins you flags. It'll be amazing how much easier it'll be for someone like Duursma to look and play like a match winner when we've got 23 guys playing their role and pulling in the same direction.

Disagree to an extent. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed that win last year and am happy with who we got but it’s pretty natural to look back and think what if. If that win had carried over into this year and we got a few wins early most of us could comfortably stomach what Harley is doing.
The reality is we haven’t and if anything have gotten worse. Now obviously there’s multiple reasons for that, losing experienced players, our current experienced players being dross etc.

I don’t begrudge anyone who feels shit about where we’re currently at and lamenting missing out on Reid. campaigners an absolute star. Would we be winning games with him out there? No idea, but I think most would feel a little better about our current plight.

Anyway, as always it’s just a game, but I’m hardly gonna sit here and tell others how they should feel about it.

Again, and as often as it takes, Reid can only play the way he is because he has senior, experienced, premiership winning quality players around him. If he played in our team no-one would be seeing what they have seen this year. Good luck to him. And after 23 rounds we were not the worst team in it so we didn’t get the first draft pick, because that’s how it works. I’ll
never be sorry about a win and they have been so rare they’ve only become more precious.

I can't stand the naval gazing. Maybe others can - there's a time and place for feeling crap about something happening (Comben injury last year, George shoulder, Bergman recurring injuries etc.) but the constant Eeyore attitude really is something else.

If people at the club in any way have let the victim mentality of 'poor us' seep in, it's no wonder we're in the position we are. We need to stop taking on the attitude of being 'poor North Melbourne, nothing ever goes right for us' and resolve to our destiny being in our own hands.

While it's nice watching Sheezel have it 32 times yesterday or Comben show a fair bit in defense again, the thing that I enjoyed more out of yesterday was some semblance of a game plan with players doing little selfless things in the first half to show we might be moving in the right direction. There were some really nice tap ons, defensive pressure around stoppage and some really clean clearances that were signs of players perhaps starting to get on the same page. There's still a lot of work to be done with defensive transition and skills which were the 2 biggest killers, but we're not going to improve across the board overnight.

Green shoots from young blokes is nice, but it means nothing when compared to team cohesion.

Surely if that’s where you got to after yesterday’s game you can understand why others are feeling a way that you can’t stand. We might be moving the right direction? I think that every so often too. Then a quarter like the third happens and I realize that “might” is doing some serious heavy lifting.

I really felt when I heard Todd on the radio answer a question about assistance with “we used assistance to have five first round picks last year and we are very happy with the players we drafted”, it was a clear message that no-one internally is bemoaning the past or being negative about where we are and where we can go with hard work and patience. Every player interview backs that view up. It’s only some supporters who choose to wallow in misery.

And I say that as someone who shed tears yet again at the game yesterday (at three quarter time). You don’t have to pretend it’s great, it’s how you decide to move ahead.

100%. Sometimes moving ahead means feeling shit and having a whine about something in the past that ultimately we have no control over. That’s okay, we can let people feel things even if we don’t feel the same things.

And then the fourth happened as well.

Zach Tuohy was good on the radio at three quarter time - he said very calmly that he hoped North could come back and not drop their heads and let it get further away, but to feel that even if wouldn’t win the game this week they still had an important opportunity to show some progress to keep building on. And they seemed to do just that. I didn’t love the day and I hated the third quarter but I definitely saw a lot I liked as well. I was overseas for the Freo game so it’s been a long while since I stood in the stands and had that much to cheer about.

I'm with you in this H2H, but I'll just note that the older players West Coast have are guys like Jamie Cripps, Tom Cole, Liam Duggan, Josh Rotham, Alex Witherden, Jack Petrucelle - all of whom are solid citizens but no world-beaters.

Food for thought for those who want to gut that section of our list yet again.

Kelly, Yeo, McGovern and others who are better than solid as well. They won the flag five years ago with some solid citizens as well as some stars.

We, on the other hand, need our older players to work up to being reliable contributors - Corr and LMac and Fisher seem to have done that for a couple of weeks but those guys we still have need to show up every week for the kids to have room to take risks and grow.

True, but keeping All-Australians is a pretty easy decision. I think we cut a bunch of serviceable players too soon but instead of arguing about the past yet again, I'll just say the Eagles recovery shows the benefit of keeping some of those middle-ranking guys (the Cole/ Petrucelle types) as well as the elite ones.
