Perhaps more a mystery than a crime, but... is he the new Somerton Man?

The Pakenham Man's body was discovered on train tracks on the night of August 14th, 2008.

CCTV footage from a Melbourne-bound train from Pakenham show the man pacing about, seemingly in some distress.

He disappears and reappears on CCTV a couple of times. It's believed he exited the train between carriages while it was stopped at a station, and lay on the tracks.

He has never been reported as missing, nobody has ever come forward to claim his body, and public and media pleas for his identity have gone unanswered for more than 15 years.

He is Asian or sub-continental in appearance and thought to be between 20 and 30 years of age at the time of his death.

There has been speculation that he was an international runaway or illegal immigrant that made his way to Australia alone in the hope of starting a new life.

Other more dramatic theories include the man:

  • Being a mule for an international drug or crime syndicate, who was left abandoned by his associates in Australia with no way of returning home.
  • Being a member of an international terrorism group who was sent to Australia to commit a terrorist act, before getting cold feet and instead taking his own life.

That's quite sad. Eventually, I think we'll find out who he is.

Meanwhile, a man found on train tracks in Perth 1998 has been identified.
