Agree with this but I would go a step further and pay out Tom Bell 1yr early for another draftee

I think I'd be careful about paying out contracts...it isn't a good way to breed loyalty. On the one hand you want guys to buy in but at the same time tell them they can be cut early if they don't fit into our plans...

Only people that should be paid out early should be like Frost with ongoing concussions, if he doesn't play again. Not sure how severe Bell's injury is, may well be back next year. Even if he is out for most of the year we're still better off demoting him to Rookie list if absolutely necessary.

We have enough players to shed through natural attrition without cutting contracted players, making people fear for their future. The moment they fear for their future is when they stop playing selfless football, which Fagan has worked hard to grow.

Delist: Freeman, Close, Harwood, CBeams, Jansen, Clayton, Barrett, William, Grewar

Elevate: Hammer and McInerney

Turn 14 into McKenna and Cameron.

Draft Dow, Ballenden and Payne

Attempt to trade/pay out/re-rookie: Bell and Frost

A like a lot of this, but that's only 5 off the senior list, including Paparone, with 7 players added to the senior list. I find it hard it hard to work out who to cut, as I like our players and you'd need 2 more de-listings or trades to do all of that. Hanley will need special AFL permission to stay on the rookie list for more than 3 years as well. Hammer has to be upgraded, the Big O doesn't have to be as Cat A rookies can play seniors next year. I don't envy the list managers & coaches at this time of year.

Yeah I was too lazy to even up the incoming and outgoing numbers. Also I forgot to add c beams to the delist category

Big O I reckon will attract interest so might need to be upgraded to keep him perhaps.

Delist: Clayton, Jansen, C Beams (senior list), William, Grewar (from rookie list),
Trade out: Freeman, Close
Rookie upgrade: Hammelmann
Trade in: Charlie Cameron for a mid-late 2nd rounder at the most
Draft: Dow, Worpel (would prefer Higgins or Coffield but I doubt they'll slide to our second pick), Ballenden + Jack Clayton or Jack Payne as a rookie (if they fall that far). Use the second rookie spot on a small forward.

I'd be looking to swap pick 18 for two later picks (maybe 18 for Gold Coast's 24 and 33/37), so that we can use one to get Cameron and the other (plus the rest of our later picks) to match a bid for Ballenden. If we could get a 3rd-4th rounder for Close we should have enough points without going into deficit.

Personally not underestimating Bells worth to the team if he can get back to career best form. His best is best 22 next year imo.
Fagan's game plan requires good users of the ball by hand and foot. Rules Bell out imo.

My GM move would be dangling Stef on the market.

Rationale:
  • A gap is beginning to emerge between his best and worst footy.
  • Archie 'should' go ahead of him next season & McInerney looks likely.
  • He will be 31 next season - get some currency out of him while we can.
The problem with my grand plan is there isn't a market for ruckmen this year. No one is desperately crying out for a position that's seemingly becoming less important and additionally there are probably better options available - Goldstein or Preuss.

But if someone took a particular fancy for Martin I'd welcome a late second/early third round pick - bank the points for Ballenden and try to move up from 18.

Yeah I was tempted to suggest something similar but there is also the fact that he was pretty loyal to us a couple of years ago when he could have moved on

Think people are underselling Barrett a bit. I thought he was pretty reasonable in his games... not bad for a rookie playing in the worst forward line in the comp with the least amount of inside 50s. Puts his body on the line and his disposal by foot has improved a lot since round 1. His next step is to put himself into more positions to score goals. He's pretty good at grabbing the opportunistic goals. Certainly a better fit for our team than Green. Regardless I think he'll have to take the next step if Cameron comes to our club.

Well said. Although he's older than average it was essentially his first year of senior footy - it takes time to adjust to the tempo. Despite coming from the rookie list he managed 16 games and was rated one of the best pressure forwards in the comp. We all know what he needs to improve but Jake's season was one of the club's minor victories of the year.

My wish list for this off season-

1) Hugh McCluggage, Jacob Allison and Alex Witherden sign extensions to the end of 2020.
2) Draft- Paddy Dow, Lochie O'Brien, James Worpel, Connor Ballenden, Jack Payne + one of Adam Sambono/Liam Ryan*/Sam Switkowski as a very late draft or rookie selection.
3) Tom Rockliff re signs.
4) Trade in- Charlie Cameron and Levi Casboult.
5) Springfield signed sealed and delivered and ready for the 2019 AFLW season.

* Liam has been invited to the WA state combine, will be interesting to see if he has improved his endurance and attitude.

I would be open to trade offers for still contracted players Marco Paparone and Stefan Martin.

That's 7-8 new players on the primary list, will be hard to do but I'm sure we could manage it. I'll leave it to Noble and Ambrogio to work out who gets delisted or traded out.

Bell isnt agile enough to play that pressure role.
How many chances will Bell get next year?bad break wouldn't think he gets up until halfway through the year.Already been surpassed on the wing and half forward not agile or clean enough disposal disgraceful. Cannot see him continuing past next year let him go early and get development into a draftee.

I cant see him getting back in, I havent heard how the injury is going, but I had a teammate who had the same injury and it was well over a year.

i was on board until Casboult.

Caveat- Casboult to play up the ground as the target for the bail out kick from D50 and only has a set shot for goal from inside 10 or outside 50;), he's a free agent so no trade needed and he's a bloody good contested pack mark, IMO he would be worth the list spot that Freeman or Close is taking ATM. Send Josh Walker back as the mature big body we need down there.

Wouldn't be de listing at all. Good depth player. Became quite good in link up plays towards the end of the season.
