I love Perth. Was born here, raised here and have lived here all my life bar a stint in Sydney. If you love the outdoors lifestyle, it's fantastic. Great fishing, surfing, camping, weather ( I'd take 40+ in Perth over 30+ in Brisbane/Darwin anyday ) etc. I live right on the edge of the Swan Valley so for someone who loves their wine, beer and good food, it's ideal.

One thing I really dislike about Perth and I'm suprised no one has mentioned it, is the driving. Atrocious.

People here have no idea. I've driven in most states, mostly in Melbourne as I go there often, and I never fail to be amazed when I come back here. Maybe this phenomenon of peak hour congestion is new to us but we are not learning what it's all about. We are so used to our spread out lifestyle, we guard every inch around our vehicles tooth and nail.

They really should emphasise merging and giving way to pedestrians when they teach people how to drive. Every other state gets it. I always forget my self when I come back here after a Melbourne trip. Drivers give way to people crossing the street. In Perth if I step out when I see the little green man, I end up spread eagle on a car bonnet with my face up against the windshield.

Did a job in Subi today..driving home south on Kwinana...2.30pm...thinking "sweet, avoiding peak hour traffic"....come up towards Roe hwy merger and 3kms of built up traffic is there to meet me.

I just can't believe the state of Perth's freeways...its truly mindboggling.

10 years ago, I was based in Balcatta. We used to race to make sure we got on the Freeway by 7.30 am to beat the traffic.

We are now based in Neerabup at the very end of the Freeway and even at 5.30 am, it's shocking.

If the Freeways are Perths main arteries, they are the arteries of a 60 year old man who has been smoking, drinking and tucking into a KFC Family Feast every night.

I'm down the other end past Port Kennedy. If you're not on the freeway at Baldivis going north by 5.15am then prepare for the shit 15kms up the road.

I pity you.

You Southerners have it worse than we do.

Yep that's a shocking spot. Roe hwy backs up for a few kms at most of the day as well. Was driving down there at 11am last week and it was building up then :(

Its ridiculous that a major freeway like the Roe Hwy can have thousands of cars and semi trailer trucks all converge on a merge road that goes uphill and has a 200 mtr bend in it.

Perth drivers are that bad its not funny.

No idea what so ever..

The Roe Hwy off ramp does have those funky light poles.

Winning.

Its that bloody hill!!! Either way you're going..in the early morning...mid morning..noon and after 2.30pm going south.

Perth drivers slow down when going over that hill.

I want to kill them all...

The most Perth thing in this thread so far. Gotta love associating typically poor, low-cost, cheap-and-nasty alcohol with typically poor groups like... the poor, uni students, and... Aboriginals!

Or you know... he could be commenting on the fact that many Aboriginal people prefer EE over other options. You can put away the paper bag and cease your PC panic attack.

I work at a drive-thru and it's $45 for a block, so it's certainly not the cheapest beer, yet i'd say it's still the beer they buy most. How is this any worse than saying bogans love their Jim Beam, Indians love their Scotch and teenage girls love Cruisers?

Being born and bred and currently living outside of Perth I find myself having a love hate relationship with the place.

The beaches and weather are completely in a league of their own as is the access to fresh food, after living in a place that has to import much of its food I really miss Perth produce. Locals have a relaxed outlook on life and in most cases there is a genuine community spirit and openness.

The problem with Perth is the sprawl and lack of transport infrastructure, after living in a city with Subways and not needing a car I can't imagine going back to driving to work or sitting at bus stops or train stations for 20 minutes waiting to get picked up. Thankfully some steps are being taken to increase the density and make the city itself a place you want to live and spend your time. The "small isolated town" mentality is disappearing as people can afford to travel and experience other cities and cultures. Alcohol violence is still a massive problem but this is tied to the lack of density and transport.

Perth I feel is at a fork on the road, will it continue to go down the Detroit path of car reliant expansion and reliance on one industry or will it diversify its industries and focus on communities that are walkable. I think my generation (Y) has spent enough time in New York and London to realize the benefit of rarely using a car, so I think we will take option two but the mentality of needing a big back yard and excessive rooms and bathrooms is still a massive hurdle to overcome.

Woah I played football for Girrawheen! I didn't punch anyone in the face personally though.

I like how everyone's complaining about random suburbs of Perth. They've got nothing on growing up in Girrawheen/Koondoola. Like when people say places "could be worse" the "worse" is the area I lived in for 25 years.
Yeah I played footy for the Pumas too. Wasn't too happy when they folded after 2004.

When I went to Girrawheen SHS, I had to walk through the joint daily and I can also confirm that the stereotypes of suburb and school are true.

Ahaha I went to Girrawheen too. Classy classy joint. I hear it's being torn down soon. Can't come soon enough.

I'm sad about the Pumas folding though. They used to have so many kids playing for them, and some of the teams were pretty successful too. It's not like there's a bunch of other teams around the area for the kids to go to either. I guess Kingsley would be closest

Yeah it's supposed to come down in the near future. I can't say I'll be sad to see it go.

The Pumas folding was a sad time for me, as my team had quite a few characters and we all tended to get along okay. Would hate to think where most of them are today though. Had to play for Ballajura after which just wasn't as fun, although it did mean we could get a full team together every week which wasn't the case during the last season at Girra.

I didn't realise they had folded, is there a another team that has replaced them?

I played against the Pumas from 1992-1996 and they won the flag every year apart from 1996 which was under 17's and they didn't even have a team that year.

By then their better players were at East Perth and the rest were getting in to 'other' things.

Not that I'm aware of. Girrawheen and Koondoola are largely soccer dominated now with high African, Asian and Middle Eastern populations. Hudson Park had soccer goals up last time I went past.

Hudson Park, the oval built on top of a old rubbish tip.

I remember playing their one day and it had been raining pretty heavily all week and the whole oval was ankle deep in water.

We might've played against each other then! I was just a fill in for the team though cos technically i was too young to play for them. So if I wasn't playing I was a pretty awesome water girl. Some of the guys in that team were stupidly talented footballers

Were/are you a female footballer? Is that why you've got the photo of another chick as your avi? :D
