So, what makes the 76'ers an exciting team for the future?
Joel Hans Embiid.

+ Simmons/Fultz/Saric/Covington + 30 million cap space this off season + possibly the Lakers pick this year or the Kings unprotected 1st next year.

They've got one of the most, if not the most promising young core with top tier talent in the league locked up via contract to grow together whilst still having tons of flexibility to add to it.

Love watching them play together. Just want to know what is stopping them from moving into champinship/playoff contention?

Without being a baller tragic, suggested before that perimeter shooting looks to be a short fall and an over reliance on points in the paint. Was very good yesterday against the Celtics. Embiid sensational. Enjoying MCConnel's cameo's from the bench.

The biggest immediate issue is experience and chemistry, the two best players only have a total of a 100 games between them so that holds them back a bit, as a group they just havn't played together long enough so only time and reps can really cure some of that.

Personal wise they need Fultz to get over whatever he's going through because his skill set represents something neither Ben nor Joel has, the ability to be a really good pick and roll ball handler who can create and make tough shots which has been a constant problem for the team when they get in a funk they just don't have enough guys who can create a shot which is where you get an over-reliance on the 3 ball (which obviously has high variance and is subject to long cold streaks) or an over reliance on Joel and sometimes he can be turnover prone or other teams will double him hard and if other guys aren't contributing it leads to poor offensive stretches (and in turn bad defense since misses lead to good offensive opportunities for the opposition).

The bench has been pretty meh overall and they just need another couple of creators, the starting 5 unit they're using has one of the best net ratings in the league (+17.6 points per 100 possessions, compare that to Golden States starting 5's net rating of +18.6) so this off season will be pretty big in sort of rounding out the roster to make it one to best take advantage of Joel/Ben/Fultz (if he returns to getting over whatever yips is ailing him)

the bench kills them. when Bayless is on the floor he is awful. they should trade Holmes if they wont play him. TLC played ok last game but has been poor shooting outside. Booker I like. he has a crack.

too often Ben brings the ball up court, dumps it off and then stands on the wings and doesn't move. why?

3 in a row, 7 of last 8, 8 of last 10.
Great play at present, and in spite of ongoing injuries troubles.
Embiid showing for all concerned his all-star both when he is on the court, and when we are missing him.

they've lost a couple of shockers but also beaten Rockets, Celtics, Raptors, Wolves, Bucks, Wizards, Pacers, Spurs, Portland.

They're going to be a very good team in a year or two.

Where does LBJ go next year?

I must confess I'm not a huge basketball fan but I've been interested in watching Simmons so I've been following most Philly games this year.

So for the experts out there...why do they run Simmons on and off the court using almost exactly the same schedule of rotations every game? It's like they programmed their rotations at the start of the year and won't change them for anything. Simmons always starts well with a couple of baskets and assists, then when he's looking good and dominating the game he goes to the bench after 7 minutes and reappears about 4 minutes into the 2nd quarter by which time he seems to have been sitting for an age and has lost all momentum and his feel for the game. It's the same in the 4th quarter where he always starts on the bench and checks in with 8 or 9 minutes to go regardless of the score or how well he's been playing.

It's like the coach completely ignores the state of the game just to follow some preset pattern to maximise rest and recovery. Doesn't make sense to me. Thoughts?

Yep you're spot on. But you can't say anything about the coach on here. Coach needs to get better as does the players.

Collapses been happening semi-frequently throughout the season though.
Oh yeah, no doubt, they've been a bit better at arresting momentum back recently but I think the meltdowns are going to be around for a little bit yet.

One trend that I think Jo needs to grow out of, and I think he will in time, is that he has a tendency to only really get himself going for games against big opposition in really loud arenas where he can feed off the energy. If he's going to be a real top guy in the league, he's going to play in a lot of dead arena's against shit teams so he's gotta find a way to get himself going because you can basically tell from the jump when he's going to have bad games from his energy levels/demeanour.

It's not just about Ben, it's about being able to stagger his minutes with Joel so one of them is on the floor at all times and we don't have to see any extended minutes of line ups without both of them which would make people say "wtf is Brett doing, why are they both on the bench". And due to Joel's lack of conditioning Simmons plays in longer spurts so you'll see Joel go out 1st in the first quarter and Simmons stay in, then Joel come in to be the best player on the floor. He plays 35 minutes a game, which is good for 17th in the league and 1st among rookies, he's playing plenty. Can't just be burning him out because of feel, other guys have to be able to do things.

The makeup of their roster is led by two players that have played a tick over a seasons worth of games between them. They're extremely limited in players that can create their own shot, and their bench is poor.

And yet, they've won 8 of their last 10, are a top 5 team defensively, and are placed no more or no less than they need to be.

Say what you need to about Brett, but if you're understanding of why they're giving up leads is how Simmons is being rotated, then there's a pretty large disconnect from what you think is happening and what the reality is.
