tony cochane was the former president of the 'suns'. he was interviewed today. he’s been part of the group that has reported to the qld gov’t on the way forward for the olympic games, including stadiums. he said the proposed stadium would end up costing at least $1.4 billion and too much focus is on it. the afl/gov’t should forget it. put extra funds into the launceston development and get the focus back on the knitting, which is putting together a competitive team.

What did you add, besides your summary of another person's opinion and a mis-quote? Posting a link to the source would have been helpful. We would also then know how to spell his name correctly.

I know a lot of important "part of a group" people. I used to be one myself, and we would say all sorts of things. Not sure how much this particular POAG guy knows about building stadiums with local timber though, considering he appears to have no experience whatsoever in this domain.

Was the group this guy was a part of, the same group that said the way forward for the olympic games was not to hold them?

He also said the AFL shouldn’t back out of a Tasmanian team now, as they have gone too far down the road to turn back and would cause too much damage to its image and the game in Tasmania. But went on to say that any such team should be based in Launceston and play its game there. Make of that what you will - perhaps he doesn’t know how small Launnie is.

He also spoke at some length of the grass roots strength of the game on the Gold Coast, with junior participation now well ahead of rugby league as the game of choice to both play and follow and the Suns now having a much greater following than the Titans. To me, this seemed like another good reason to have a Tasmanian team.

as I mentioned, he was part of the government team established to examine the infrastructure needed for the olympics, among other things. so, he’d be aware of current-day costs and requirements. i think he had a bit to do with metricon. and his years of experience as a promoter and entrepreneur, which required dealing with stadium managements, would give him insight.

i’m not a huge fan, but i do think his opinion has some merit.

The Carrara redevelopment was completed in 2011, while he was still involved in Supercars and well before he got involved in the Suns' board.

anyhoo, he’s entitled to a viewpoint that is based on having way more knowledge of current infrastructure costs than either you or i. and i say that not as a fan as i regard him as a loudmouth - albeit it a successful one - but, unlike you, i’m prepared to park that and examine what he says without prejudice. you should try it.
