Is it just me or does the term interstate annoy other people.
We are in a NATIONAL competition yet every side that isn't Vic based is known as an interstate team. So therefore that means everything revolves around Victoria so it really hasn't moved on from the VFL.
Yes I know Victoria has 10 teams, even though it can only really support 6 teams successfully.
Yes I know the MCG is the best stadium in Australia for footy.
Yes I know the AFL commission resides in Victoria.

While the term interstate continues to be used it will typify what the AFL is all about. The same thing goes for the fact that certain Vic teams can play outside Victoria 4-5 times a year and say it's fair. How can a side play at the same ground 15 times in the home and away season, 8 times in a row, and say the draw is even when the reigning premiers play on that ground once.

To be a truly recognised even national competition there are a few facets of the way things are run that need to be looked at. Stop changing the rules and the game and start making an even national competition.

It really annoys me. I grew up in Melbourne but have lived over here in Perth for quite a while now.

It wasn't until I moved here that I saw this "us versus them" mentally adopted by so many. My group of friends back in Melb never thought of the National competition in that way, even though we grew up with the old VFL. The AFL was certianly embraced but granted, the history remained - and with good reason.

From what I have been exposed to this "interstate" mentality stems largely from those outside Vic, not in Vic. And it's a real battle for me to accept the mentality of a lot of people over here...

Your post is obviously geared towards Collingwood - but that is more financial, and a seperate issue. They get the games at the "G" because their opponents request that....

Maybe
- we can leave the 10 Vic Clubs to the VFL
- the 6 non-Vic clubs, plus extra 1 ACT, 1 Tas, 1 WA and 1 SA clubs to make an NFL (National Football League)
- each comp can play a full 18 round season (2x9)
- each comp plays a 3 week, final 4 system to determine the League champion.
- the 2 league champions play off in the Australian Football World Championship.
- the showcase mid-season game between the VFL and NFL to determine home-ground advantage for the Grand Final.

don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Our door would be fine. An all-Victorian 10-team competition would seriously lack funds to survive against a 10-team non-Victorian competition. It's these sides that are keeping the poor Victorian clubs afloat.

really? show me proof that it's only the Interstate teams keeping them afloat.

the term instate is outdated, but I think the vics will have a hard time dropping it.
In hindsight a national league created from scratch instead of the expanded VFl would've been the better option IMO. We would've avoided alot of the issues and problems that we have in todays league.

exactly, we could have avoided shit clubs like Fremantle tarnishing the brand

If the financial and sponsorship contributions that Adelaide and Perth give the AFL were taken away and moved into an alternative competition, the Kangaroos and Western Bulldogs would be in serious, serious financial trouble.

I don't tihnk that term has ever been dated....

so your saying the biggest state out of the main 3 football states would be in trouble if Adelaide and Perth no longer contributed?

Victoria would find enough sponsors, don't let the media misguide you into thinking 90% of Victorian clubs are in trouble.

The term Interstate used used to describe a situation. It can only be used by the Victorian teams.

Its a TERM nothing more.

If you dont like the term interstate.

here are some other terms you can pick from:

the unfriendlies
the faultfinders
the moaners
the nit-pickers
or more simply my favourite the whiners

That's exactly what I'm saying. If a 10-team Victorian-only competition had to compete with a 10-team National competition it would struggle. Largely because a 10-team Victorian competition would fail to survive - the Kangaroos and the Bulldogs would either have to merge or fold. It would function, sure, but it would not be able to compete with a wider National competition.

I never said that 90% were in trouble. Collingwood and Essendon are powerhouses. But the Kangaroos and the Bulldogs would go close to folding.

Lance, you're on the money, matey.

As the old saying goes, "If you don't like it, **** off!"

cool- we'll create a new proper de-centralised national league and leave you to play in the VFL. See how you go without all the non victorian teams under writing some of Vic's poorer performing clubs financially.
