Daniel Ellsberg wrote a book called the doomsday machine.
he was the original pentagon leaker, he goes through how the decision making process and how in the event of nuclear war the firing of weapons was/is given to the Admirals and Generals on the ground, that way even if they strike the WH there's a bunch of people who can respond.

He has had many conversations with his Russian counterparts since the cold war and basically came to the conclusion they have the same process in place. all the old timers believe these current lot are nuts/tv generals, they're desperate for the name in history books.

That a great read, plenty of terrifying fact in that fiction.

I'm watching "Turning point" now, which runs a line from the end of WW2 to the Ukraine situation. It reminds me of that book in that it highlights some disasterous decision making in that time. Genious intellect does not mean wisdom.

I can’t remember the exact story, but many years ago a large flock of birds almost triggered a nuclear exchange. I’ll try to find it.

Here’s an article about it. I think the closest we’ve come though was in 1983 where stanislav petrov went against protocol and saved a lot of lives.

And the NMFC footy forum mods didn't sign up to moderate political debates. They don't want to do that, and I don't blame them.
