Nightshift investigations have revealed a curious turn of events leading to the sudden disappearance of a gun breakout star of the SweetFA in S37.
No sooner had the Dragons announced him as Captain for S38, than he vanished in a puff of smoke with a hint of acrimony.
His tour de force in the media throughout the season had been nothing less than sensational and betrayed a knowledge beyond his reported years.
Any skepticism at the time had been allayed by reports that a Dragons powerbroker had guided his “protege” through the deeper mysteries of the Land of Sweet, to being widely lauded for his quality media.
For the new Dragon to become Captain seemed a just return for those long nights sweating over bar graphs and pie charts. Around the league, clubs had welcomed his insights and were challenged by his compelling analyses.
But within days of him finishing 3rd in the beez trophy (an extraordinary feat for a sophomore) and after being anointed as the new Captain, he was suddenly exposed as a veteran with considerable experience and subsequently de-registered.
#Nightshift can now reveal an eery symmetry between this scandal and one that saw him leave the league in acrimony in the first place
Two mates who had formed a close bond from S30 to S32 when they were at the Warriors, would cross paths again down the track.
In the preseason of S33 the then veteran moved from the Warriors to the Furies, joining amongst others the club Vice Captain - an experienced campaigner.
By the end of that season, the veteran’s mate from the Warriors had decided to join him at the Furies.
But things didn’t go to plan and the veteran was de-registered before the start of S34, unable to play alongside his mate.
Around that time, the campaigner also moved on from the Furies, passing the veteran’s mate in the hallway.
After two seasons in the wilderness, the veteran attempted to restart his career at the Dragons in S36 … just as the campaigner arrived there from the Old Boys.
In S37, the campaigner was Captain of the Dragons, but by the end of that season the veteran had done enough to be promoted to the new Dragons Captain ….. notwithstanding that the campaigner had other ideas and wanted to keep the job himself.
Days later, the campaigner - under siege and refusing to vacate his seat as Captain - announced the veteran’s mate would also be joining the Dragons in S38.
But once again, a few days after that, the veteran was outed for who he really is and was de-registered, again without playing a game alongside his old mate.
There may be plenty yet to play out in this curious echo of days gone by.
