I meant to say Hawkins played 329 games for us.
That's a pretty good run, but then he had to leave and play against us.

IMO he wasnt completely past it when he left, but was pretty damn close. Its always hard for a player to retire and when the club you love tells you that you wont get another contract you would be absolutely shattered. Another club says, those guys are idiots you can still play, what are you supposed to do?

Fair enough but I still hope Granty gets the record!

Me too, Hawkins was a star when I was young and my grasp of footy wasnt great. Grant has been a star during my 'I actually know something about football' years. Just an out and out great bloke. Used to love occassionally seeing him at his shop in highpoint.

Hawkins had broken the record and played,I think 229 games for us, and then went to an opposition team which played against us, a team which tried to take us over in 1989.
Hawkins had a pretty good run and did not do the right thing by the team at the end.
Chris Grant would be a better holder of the record.
I think you are the fool.
how old are you 10? if you remember he was forced out of the club to say that hawkins left the club on his own free will. Hawkings was one of the most loyal players ever to bull on the jumper and would have died for his club
how can you call me a fool for telling you the facts?

Grant is a far better representative of true loyalty.
He knocked back heaps from Port Adelaide and will be a one club player.
Hawkins finished as a Fitzroy player and I wouldn't be surprised if he really regretted it now.

For what it worth I think the Turtle will play on. His form has been too good for him not to.

I could watch that blind turn goal 1,000,000 times. Poetry in motion.

Doug will tell you himself he regrets having played for Fitzroy. In his prime he knocked back real money and premiersip glory from more tham one club to stick with us. Whether he played for another club or not he is still a legend of our club the same as Chris Grant and we're lucky they're both Bulldogs.

Thanks to a mutual friend, I had the privilege to have lunch with the great man a few years back.

He did indeed wish to finish his career with the Dogs but they told him he was finished. He said that he knew it too, but just loved playing footy that much he wanted to keep going and Fitzroy gave him the chance.

There was also the money. He left school at 14 and thought his career prospects were pretty grim. He said he knew his media work was going to die "I've only got one joke and when everyone gets sick of it, I'll be out on my arse".

I hope that it isnt the end for him - Reading by some of the comments you've made, I will continue my reluctance(sp????) to write champions off so I will refrain from making a prediction for now!!!

Fingers Crossed & all the best Chris!

Only time will tell but we can only hope that things don't turn out as bad as they seem at the moment and Chris gets back into the team soon.
