News Thompson signs with Essendon

This works well for us.

It's more fuel, it wont be used publicly, but Balme will make sure it burns a fire within the club.

Lock up Bartel early, potentially name a new captain (or at least a succession plan in place for this year) and we're on pace to unite a core group that we can build around.

Would love to see Tom Harley back with the club in some kind of role, but the Gaj and Thompson moves remind everyone that it's a business to some people at the end of the day. But a business has never won a premiership (maybe Carlton bought one). It takes more than a business mindset to win a premiership and we've just unloaded some baggage that should be of benefit short and long term.

Watching the press conference live now. What a bunch of blatant bloody lies. Honestly how dumb do these pricks think people are. "Bomber showed up at training this morning unexpected". What a complete load of BS.

Gutless prick, isn't even going to speak at the press conference. Can turn up to training, but no balls to speak.... pathetic.

Bottom line, he doesn't want to coach Geelong, so we don't want him, it would only have a negative effect. The worst part is he'll always be one of the best Coaches we've ever had, that hurts, because I kind of don't respect him anymore.

Its a sad day for me in that I think it will finally close the door on loyalty and honesty within the AFL community.

That being the case, here's what I don't understand. Why don't the clubs put a clause into the contracts of every coach that prohibits them from joining a rival club if they resign? If the coach is sacked, he's free to do what he wants. However, if he voluntarily resigns he has legally agreed (and will therefore be legally prohibited) to not join any other club within the AFL in any official capacity (full or part-time). I'd also be putting in a few lines about them not holding talks, informal or otherwise, with other clubs while they're contracted.

If you can't expect loyalty and honesty then why not plan ahead and legally force the buggers from leaving you in the lurch?

What is his actual role there?

Senior assistant coach right? Considering James Hird who has little to no experience in coaching I'll bet Hird becomes Bombers mouthpiece this upcoming season.

Geez, I'm not a geelong supporter, but even I feel a little incensed on your behalf. Pretty ugly end to what was a brilliant period of success he had at your club...

Should of fronted the press himself and explained his decision himself i recon. Pretty cowardly move from what i think is normally a pretty upfront and honest kind of bloke

Well, im guessing no clubs want a coach to stay on, who heart isnt in it anymore. Id rather get rid of THompson and him stick around, than him sit ther all 2011 wishing he was at Essendont....could stuff our season.

We had him til the end of 2011, but wiht him obviously wanting to go...there was no way they were going to make him honor his contract.

Any club would be stupid to MAKE someone honor thier contract.

They should have a clause saying, "If you want to leave thats fine, but you cant work for any other AFL club for 12 months afterwoods". That might have the same effect i stated above though...

At least burnout wont be a problem for him anymore.......

The bombers have played 4 weeks less than us for the last few years and will continue to do with the list they have for sometime yet!

I think you'll find press conferences rarely feature assistant coaches anyway, regardless of who they are and where they come from.

It's disappointing how it's all panned out, but after the past few years I wish Bomber himself nothing but the best. Can't say the same for the Bombers, but this also applies for any other team that isn't Geelong. :thumbsu:

Hasn't been handled particularly well by Essendon, but if a change of scenery is what Thompson needed for his state of mind and future career, then so be it. I'm more interested in Geelong, and how we bounce back from season 2010 both on- and off-field.

I can't see how it would be legally enforceable because it would infringe on their rights of freedom. It would be like prohibiting the average worker from taking another job in the event of their resignation.

Mind you,

a) I'm not a lawyer, and

b) when you buy a business, there is often a clause in the contract of
sale that prohibits the vendor from practicing in the industry within a
certain time-frame and distance from the establishment. ??

The point I'm high-lighting really is that the very soul of the game is being destroyed by the pursuit of money above all else, which is being promoted by the guardians of the game themselves.

Had to have a laugh at Hamilton during his presser "We started talking to Mark a long time ago" and then a few minutes later comes out with " We only started looking for assistant coaches when Jame was appointed coach and Mark was on that list" the poor guy has told so many lies he cant keep track of them all.

At least this makes Hirds presser the other day make sense he was trying to soften the PR blow of this announcement by saying Thompson hasn't signed yet. Hird then just happens to have a interstate scouting mission leaving Hamilton to deal with all the negative PR

My 2 cents:

Dirty on the fact that Bomber drilled Gaz all year just to pull this in the end.
IMO, he has lost alot of credibility / respect from supporters.

On the flip, it is probably the best thing to happen. New coach. New ideas. Players will have to EARN their place in the 22.

And best of all, we are still a very talented list - throw ina few unexpected suprise packets like Mitch Duncan, Daniel Menzal, T.Hunt etc with another pre season behind them, The Cats are still a force.

GO CATS!

I still dont understand why Bomber didnt come out with a statement earlier stating the truth ie "i have lost the passion to be a senior coach and have been presented with an opportunity stay in football in a lesser role at Essendon, the club i played my whole career at and would love to be involved with again."

Done. No more needs to be said, he doesnt lose all credibility and Essendon and himself get what they want without all the cloak and daggers stuff that they now look like idiots for.

I for one wouldnt have begrudged him at all and thanked him for his efforts in bringing 2 premierships to the cats. Maybe i am too naive about the whole thing....

I think the entire football community would have appreciated this. I really cant understand why he went down the path he did with the whole burn out crap. I'm not a cats supporter but as a supporter of football I really find this an odd situation that I reckon has been handled incredibly poorly by those concerned.

He will be playing with his nuts...won't do sh!t over there...list is no good...Geelong had an A class list...Essendon has a C class list...if that...
