Okay with Kelly at 21 but nothing lower. It's a very strong draft and we need quality replacements in 4 years for our midfield

I am sure that every, if not most, draft period you've state this.

The club will always have one eye on the future.

However, given Gaff is staying, we don't have that pressing need to get Tim now, so if our offer of 20 or 21 is knocked back, so be it. Use the pick on the available talent. We aren't selling the farm here.

The amount of faith you put in the auskickers is amazing. The AFL is not a junior competition.
Yes of course you look at the future but we have truck loads of young guys on our list now. Grabbing another kid at pick 20 is like just grabbing anyone for the sake of it.

So basically win a flag rebuild is the way?

This is possibly why we have never gone back to back because of this attitude., hopefully the club has now learnt what to do to stay in a premiership window.

So you have no faith in what we have now that is a talented relatively young balanced squad

Drafting one person does not make a rebuild. Infact we have to draft a minimum amount of players each year, at least turnover a certain amount of spots.

Yes I have plenty of faith, I just think Kelly is a better option than any kid in the country we could get with our picks. Potential means nothing to me. You either can or you can't.

That is actually quite disrespectful to the young blokes trying to make into the big league.

Not sure I made this point tbh.

It is not disrespectful as they should never be put near an AFL list until they are ready to play. You should have to earn a spot on an AFL list, not be given one because you possibly could become good at the game one day.

Which of Brander, Allen, Ryan, Petruccelle, Ainsworth and Brayshaw do you think didn't deserve a spot on an AFL list in 2018?

I love you guys but objectively speaking Tim Kelly is easily worth a top 10 pick.

Have a look at picks 4-10 in the 2001/08 'Superdrafts' - how many in hindsight would you take over Kelly? Bartel, Hurley, Ziebull (3/14)?

We have a chance to top up a premiership team with a gun mid with decent upside, who will only cost $120k (!) next year and likely $600k over the next 5 after. 17 other teams would snap up that contract in a heartbeat.

Geelong will likely give up some value on compassionate grounds, and re-signing Gaff strengthens our position but geez, let's be real here..

Well if kelly is forced to stay then i hope he sits out next season..geelong remember selwood wanted to come home too

I don't. I hope he plays and then looks at it again at the end of next year. Geelong have every right to try to maximise their position and Selwood was a completely different situation. I also understand Kelly's situation is a difficult one for him and his family and I assume a deal will get done because of that. But Clubs need to get some control back and I hope Geelong are posturing and West Coast are fair and we both walk away happy(ish) (or unhappyish as this is more often the way to know it's fair, when both sets of supporters are a bit unhappy but can live with it).

How do these young fellas develop if not on an AFL List ? Pretty sure thats why squads are quite large so the young guys are developed alongside senior AFL players at a much higher level than local leagues. And it is disrespectful to the young guys to call them "auskickers" .
On Kelly though, I agree.

Hard to answer as Brander, Brayshaw, Petruccelle had not played league football and got drafted. Allen and Ryan had both played league footy and deserved their spot.
It is my view until you have played at least one full season of League footy at state league level I don't know if you can play.
Now obviously clubs see it differently and just keep drafting the unknowns one after another. It is not rocket science to understand why so few of them play 100 games.

To answer your question directly because you asked I would not of recruited Brander, Brayshaw, Petraccelle simply because I don't know if they can play yet.
It's just my view.

The same way all good footballers have developed. Playing with and against men in state leagues.

Offer next years 1st round pick

Would need to throw in some steak knives. Cats aren't stupid. We'll be up towards the top end of town again next year.

Kelly will be worth whatever we end up paying. Realistically speaking that won't be a top 10 pick as we simply don't have the currency.

We've smashed open the window this year, so I'd much prefer to trade next years future 1st (and this years first) if it means we get Kelly now instead of 12months. Maybe Cats send back their future 2nd in that scenario or this years 2nd or 3rd rounder.

So your stance is - no draft at all?

Rather the lads go through the WAFL/VFL etc and earn a spot then go through a mature age draft?

Still don't think they deserve to be called "auskickers" , those lads have worked their arse off and sacrificed a fair bit to get that chance to play at the top level.
