Time Capsule - 11 June 2010 (Fri night victory over Carlton)

As a few people have suggested, last night was probably a watershed game. One key milestone on the road to greater success. (Of course we're still going to have many ups and downs, but let's go with the gut here...)

So, what about noting your favourite aspects (passages of play, overall performances, TV comments, observations of crowd etc.) for posterity.

For me...

• Lindsay's use of the body in the 2nd quarter , then running on for his third goal.
• Hansen's handball off the ground to a running Sam Wright
• Sam Wright, receiving the ball under pressure, balking then kicking the goal
• Spud's I50s, hitting the forwards on the lead
• Boomer run, two bounces and a dead straight kick from just inside 50m for a great running goal (that's poetic... Boomer). The crowd's roar!

Our intensity/pressure over four quarters really impressed me, that's something we've been missing for a long time.

The noise from the crowd, we haven't been so vocal (and have rarely had cause to be) for a long time.

When the team plays to the game plan it works and looks fantastic.

Being able to watch and being apart of the crowd erupting when the siren went. I haven't been to a game like that since we beat Collingwood at the G' in round 5 2008.

The unbelievable atmosphere, the likes of which I haven't felt for a long time.

Seeing our youngsters in Bastinac, Ziebell, Cunnington, and Wright controlling the midfield.

Our rock solid defensive unit repelling attack after attack with composure and fluidity.

It's a good time to be a North supporter.

Yeah, this too. Not being a member of BF at that point, I was probably unaware of the significance of the game. But even so, just being a supporter of North Melbourne that night was an unparalleled feeling at the football. Hands down the best game I've ever been too, and that includes the semi-final against the Hawks.

That was as emotional as I and many others have ever been at the football. not sure of the poignancy and desperation of that moment can ever be repeated.

-Getting belted by 100 the week before.

-Toppling the media darlings

-The sheer balls of the performance.

-The isolation of being one of the 8,000 North fans amongst a crowd of 70,000.

-The sense that that would be the last time we'd ever see our team.

I was on level 3 and not one of us left until every player was off the ground. I was not the only North fan emotional after the game

As for the game....

Loved Grima's back with the flight spoil in the Last. Twas huge. Same with his spoil.

Loved watching Spud toy with one of the Carlton players (forget which one) on the outer wing/HF. Gave the bloke all the time in the world to ping him, but Spud just kept effortlessly avoiding him. Funny shit.

Loved Lindsay's chase down and tackle. Add that moment to his 7 goals, and the bloke had a truly stellar night. Wonder what mavtime made of his game.

Loved Goldy's clutch mark late in the game, too.

The list, like the beat, goes on....

Collingwood game at the G - last with Lidge, and Hawks final are up and about.

But we ****ing arrived last night. We arrived like guns.

Thompson's pirouette on the wing early, and his 100 step, no bounce 15m run later on.

The Strange World of Hansen's kicking for goal.

Bastinac's first goal... bends it like Beckham!? benefiting from more of LT's work on the night (he got the handball out of congestion).

TOD, Spud went ring-a-ring-a-rosie with O'Hopeless. Made him look like the big Irish pile of shiezen that he is, too.

Definitely. It really felt as if we had a good strong presence there both nights too, or maybe it was just the usual 10-12,000 going nuts as we beat them.

Personally, the Collingwood game was better. I was but a mere 15 year old at that time and didn't pay much attention to the media as I do now, as prompted by BigFooty. I was happy we won, and more excited that we were giving ourself the chance to play in a Grand Final, but I have always hated Collingwood and the pure elation you could almost feel in the air when we beat them was just something else.

I would love to see the archives for the week before & after the Hawks semi-final though, I've thought a few times about what SLF & co were like on Bay 13 in the weeks preceding & after the game. Must have been an absolute bloodbath.

The sheer intensity all over the ground for almost the entire game - no easy possessions for Carlton, and the way the forwards fought to lock it in.

Boomers goal - hadn't been able to relax up till that stage, given our recent history (and the fact I went to THAT game in 2001 against the Bombers) - once he got the ball and took off, you just knew that the game was finally ours.

The members getting up and chanting every time there was a throw-in on the wing, to fire up the boys.

The crush of people outside the Dome afterwards. Left from the members wing, and it took ages to get to the footbridge to Southern Cross. Haven't experienced such a mass of people after a game before (Never an issue at the 'G, as there are so many ways to get out).

That Colliwobbles post game feeling's a good comparison. Wherever last night rates it certainly felt "up there" for post match winning feelings from the past couple of years. The youth amongst the team makes the difference. We can see the future, and it looks bloody good!

It's was even better that the streets were cleared of Fiats and Alfa Romeo's by the time we wandered out through the city.

For what it's worth, this is as comprehensive as a highlights package as I think you're going to get of the semi-final.

If you do watch that, it might seem traitorous - but that shot of Franklin celebrating to the full Hawthorn crowd after the winning goal always sends shivers down my spine. Just an awesome camera angle.

People have been saying last nights game is/was the turning point, I believe the game against Freo will inevitably become the turning point, that was the low, the season turned from that point.
