Time to cull sharks in WA

If you want to swim safely you swim in swimming pools, if you want to swim or surf in the ocean you take your chances of being eaten by a shark.

Stay in the pool if you don't want to be eaten by a shark, don't blame the shark if you go into their territory and they eat you, you're asking for trouble.

Or swim at netted beaches.

Mr Schmucker said he believed the great white population had been "exploding" ever since gillnet fishing was banned along South Australia's west coast about 15 years ago.

The latest fatal attack follows the 25th anniversary of protections being placed on great whites, after the federal government declared the species vulnerable to extinction.

In October, scientists and surfers told the ABC they wanted to know whether steps to protect the marine predators along Australia's coasts were linked to a recent wave of attacks.

The WA state government has previously rejected proposals to cull sharks in the wake of fatal attacks.

However, early last year a taskforce was formed to review current shark mitigation measures in South Australia.

It recently announced it would invest half a million dollars in initiatives aimed at reducing the likelihood of shark attacks, including procuring surveillance hubs, drones and trauma kits, as well as running education programs.

Just came across this part in the article after another fatal attack in South Australia:

I'm anti-cull but it will be interesting to see if the governments change their stance if these things happen more often going forward.

Good thread tbh.

Amazing how the people who go on about 'don't swim in their environment!' are people who live in land.

Bunch of pasty indoor addicts, you want to tell a parent their 16 year old daughter 'deserved to die' because she swam in the Swan River?

Also, bet all of these people who want to protect beautiful sharks shovel red meat down their gullet like it's going out of fashion. in fact, sort of people who think stuff like 'I ate two steaks to negate a vegan!!!!!' is funny.

Every year, usually just before summer some muppet does this thread.

Almost always a West Australian who will scream that we dont understand it in the eastern states.

Was a shit take the last few times it got done and its no less a shit take now.
Victoria has the shittest beaches in the country. imagine thinking an ugly as ****, windy, yellow sanded, choppy shithole like Ocean Grove is good. **** me dead.

Victorians should admit the state is about footy, drugs, and pubs and never even try to be some sort of coastal area.

Sharks are horrible creatures.

If you're think they're beautiful you probably think Essendon born Steve Irwin is a good guy.

Sharks deserve to win every now and then.
It should be taught in schools that swimming in the ocean is a risk and to be enjoyed if you survive.
Only Neanderthal English blooded fools want to cull.
Schools don't teach anything these days.

And like, they kind of did say 'don't swim too far' and how to recognise a rip.

I'd like to see a big mouth bigfooty user even identify unsafe waters lol.

Well this was definitely worth bumping from just over 3 years ago.

You know the east coast isn’t just Victoria yeh?

In any event thanks for proving my point, keep doing exactly what’s expected and having a worlds leading shit take.

Do you peacefully let out spiders? or snakes?

Urban Melburnian/Sydneysiders have such an obsession with appearing like experts on things they've never encountered.

Absolutely piss funny.
Yeah I don’t kill spiders and I used to live in a snake prone suburb. As long as we left them alone they left us alone for the most part, otherwise we called the snake catcher and he’d just move them back into the bush.

Not far fetched to say the majority opinion includes sharks in ocean waters are to be expected and people should be warned about hotspots.

I don't think many people in a state super paranoid about a Corona virus to the point there were strict hard borders to try and stop it coming in are saying that humans who get attacked "deserve it" either and there should be human culls.
