Tippett to Swans - Will It End in Tears??

Sorry? Where did I assume players spend all their money in Sydney? That's a two edged sword. Victorian or WA players earn more in real terms, but why would they only spend it in their states? Perhaps they chip away at the Sydney property market themselves?

You cannot account for what happens after the money is earned. Players can spend it on hookers and cabbage patch doll collections for all it matters. The issue is: how much do they get paid in their hand. And is that sum equivalent to a sum they would earn in another state?

As for the logic of it all, I did point out that it is the AFL trying to fix everything with a magic bullet here. So this is their logic not mine. But when consultants fly around the world doing contracts, they always include a CoL factor in their remuneration. Are they all gettting a cheque in one hand and instructions from their employers in the other ordering them where they have to spend it to make it fair? Of course not.

If you are trying to determine what CoLA will accurately account for a difference in cost of living, you can't just increase income by the % difference in the cost of living. This will over-compensate for the difference. That's all I'm saying. If Sydney is 10% more expensive than Melbourne, increasing income by 10% in Sydney will leave those in Sydney with more money than those in Melbourne, so long as they don't spend every cent they earn.

But as you said, the CoLA had nothing to do with the cost of living in Sydney. I'm surprised a Swans fans would admit that. I admire your honesty.

You may be right.

Still, even some sort of attempt to explain how living expenses in Sydney are $80,000 more than Perth would be interesting.

All I've seen so far is "it's 10% more expensive in Sydney therefore you need 10% more money to even it out". This fanciful argument assume that every cent of income is spent in Sydney - no saving, no investing, no overseas holidays, no spending interstate, no giving any to family members...
Well, the ABS stats quouted on one of the thousands of pages in several different threads actually list the difference between Melbourne and Sydney at 15%, naturally enough this was roundly ignored for various reasons, the fact is, to accountants, like I was trained at, real money means purchasing power, it's just not a sgood in Sydney as anywhere else in Aus, all other arguments are spurious

Purchasing power, nail on the head. A CoLA should mean two players (on the same non-CoL income) could buy the same things (rent comparable places, eat comparable foods, pay all local taxes etc) in two cities over the course of a year, and end up with the same money left over. For that to happen, a CoLA should be less in percentage terms than the difference in the CoL, to account for the fact that people generally save/invest some income.

And it's less than 10% difference between Sydney and Perth.

Ah, but that's a different point. You were claiming that the Swans used the COLA to outbid the other clubs - now you're saying they had the $ but weren't prepared to pay the price.

It's certainly big $ but the Swans have a pretty good record of getting the value of players right. Only the future will tell...

No I didn't say that at all...you've come up with that all by yourself..

My reply was to this..
Hang on a minute, how about all those clubs lining up to pay Cloke $1.5M pa? Why couldn't they have outbid us?

The Clubs that were interested in Cloke were not the same suitors..(Dees, Blues, Freo, GWS & Adelaide)...GWS, BL, GC and SS that were interested clubs chasing Tippett...IIRMC.. GWS and Adelaide were the only 2 clubs that openly chased both...and all were outbidded by the Swans.

Really? When was that? GWS never spoke to him so pretty sure they never offered a contract or discussed figures. So, when were they (or Brisbane) told they were "not in the ballpark"?

Yeah no problems Numbered Days...Here you go! - Sydney morning herald

KURT Tippett's path to Sydney in today's pre-season draft is assured after the AFL informed the Brisbane Lions and Greater Western Sydney that they did not have sufficient room in their salary caps to accommodate Tippett's nominated price and did not allow them to see details of the Tippett contract demands
.

Because Geelong dont get extra to spend in theirs.

What a stupid comment.

yet sydney haven't out performed them despite some great cap advantage, could it be there is no advantage to be had from it and it is just needed.

Is it March yet?

Nah.

You can tell by the fact that people think we have a good list, a chance at another flag and are complaining that we are rich with talent and it is really really unfair that we play footy well.

Come March they will rate us from an 8th -10th team maybe, Richmond probably have a lock on 9th though, and be talking about Buckleys crew, the soon to be Hawk dynasty, Geelong's ability to win another one, Essedon being certainties, Carlton cracking it finally because Judd is really really good and so is someone else, Freo finally coming of age, the Crows (having dumped the deadweight of a spud power forward) are in line because they can just concentrate on kicking it to Tex ...... you get the story.

We will be forgotten again.

So in fact Sydney did not outbid anyone. It's not that other clubs didn't have "the coin" as you put it but that they chose to not use it on Tippett specifically because for a variety of subjective issues he wasn't as good a fit for their lists as ours at Sydney.

Sounds like the complaint you really have is more based on personal opinions you have of Tippett as an individual and nothing more?

Turn it up!!....And even if that was the case... It is a public forum and the topic is 'Tippett to the Swans -Will it End in Tears??"....It doesn't list any restrictions on personal opinions or individual assessments of Tippett or his character or lack off. Does it?

As for Clubs not having 'the coin' - the article below backs me up..Sydney worked with Tippett to help price outbid fellow suitors, (I have no problems with that.) According to that article both GWS and BL were still interested in him right up to the the PSD...

The AFL has informed the Lions and Giants that they would not be able fit Tippett into their total player payments (TPP).... The Lions are understood to have had as much as $500,000-$600,000 remaining in the TPP - what is otherwise known as the salary cap - and a further amount of $250-$350,000 in the Additional Services Agreements,

Lol @ all the Crows flogs saying Tippett is a dickhead. IF he is actually a dickhead, look who raised him to be a dickhead, The Adelaide Football Club.

....Actually, if you want to go pointing the finger... His old man, Tony Tippett, ( as you guys will soon find out!),..is a real piece of work... He launched legal proceedings against Adelaide in a bid to move his son to Sydney..and all fingers seem to point to him scripting the letter of agreement for Kurt to be traded to the club of his choice at the end of three years..

What is failed to be mentioned in a lot of this debate is why cost of living is higher in different states. There are certainly a lot of extra perks to living in Sydney and Melbourne in terms of shopping, entertainment, arts etc than what you will find in other cities and this has a lot to do with why things cost more in these states... it is the land of opportunity for business and individuals alike.

For example if, we had an AFL team in tennant creek would we apply a cost of living penalty?

Sure, we recognise that COL in Sydney and Melbourne is higher than many other places... but it is not material for people earning an average of $270k per year. If there is a COL allowance it should only apply to rookies and drafted kids. THE END!
