Toast To our Dads

Whether it was 10 years ago or closer to 50 years ago it is likely that your Dad introduced you to the Collingwood Football Club. If your house was like mine you had no choice to support the black and white unless you wanted to leave home at the young age of four.

He was the one who took you to your first football game. He held your hand as you took on the ground at the MCG, Victoria Park or Waverly.

He was the one who taught you the words to 'Good Old Collingwood' or if your Dad was like mine you grew up knowing the words because it was sung to you as a lullaby.

Dad is the one who tells you about the players of old and how much you would have loved them.

Before 2010 he tells you just what it feels like to win a Premiership...

Today, we tell our Dads we love them and buy them a present but let's thank them for introducing us to the greatest club in the world. It's their doing that made us live through years of heartache, debt and yet another loss but it's because of them we know what it feels like to be on top of the world when we won the 2010 premiership. After the win my Dad was happiest because I finally got to see one... that shows the true love of a Dad

Dads

Great post!

Always loved going to games with my old man, and forever indebted to him for introducing me too the way of black and white

Hear, Hear.:thumbsu::thumbsu:

In most cases, it's been our Dads that introduced us to this great club, and it's been our Dad who has made us sit through the poor times so that when teams like the one we have now come along, we all are so grateful to them for making us follow this great club.

Happy Father's Day, to the all the Collingwood Dad's out there.:thumbsu::D

Good post.

Yep my dad was responsible for my Collingwood faith.

We had our family reserved seats at Vic Park for over a decade. We went every week.

When I think of it, I still can't believe we used to drive all the way out to Waverley from the northern suburbs, even for night games.

I adored my dad and still do even though he died a decade ago.

Shellz, thanks for this wonderful post. I will never forget the walks along Johnston St to Vic Park with my dad's hand on my shoulder, telling me tales of Bobby Rose,Marcus Whelan, Ron Todd, Jack Regan and Nuts Coventry.

Thanks for everything, dad. I love you.

Not to put a dampener on things but my dad is a knob and a Melbourne supporter (these 2 don't actually go hand-in-hand).

Great thread though Shellz :thumbsu:

Yeah unfortunately my Dad is a knob to who barracks for Essendon, thanks f@*k he walk out out me when I was 3 and my hero my Pop is a Collingwood man.

My Dad set me straight when at age 4 i thought Richmond was the team i wanted to follow.
"You want to eat son" was the ultimatum, and im glad i changed putting it lightly.

My dad had a serious health scare recently, when he woke up in hospital his first words to mum were "How'd we go?" "they havn't done the tests yet Joe" mum said "No not me bloody Collingwood!"

Dad loves the dashers, his favs were Mannasa, Magro, Barham and he loves Daisy and Blairy now and just this morning he described to me 186 different ways in which he would love to see Milne hurt on a footy ground, and proceeded to tell me for the 97th time about his hatred for him and StKilda.

Tonight we are off for a Korean feed where no doubt the subject will be raised again :)

What a fantastic idea for a thread!
Being a Juventus supporter (black & white stripes) there was really no other team he was going to support when he came to Australia over 40 years ago.
First game Dad took me to was in '88 at the MCG v Melbourne; sitting in the old wooden seats. He would lift me up so I could see better on the old hill at Vic Park.
Great memories and I still enjoy going to the footy with him.
Buying his ticket for next weeks game as a gift so here's hoping he enjoys it & sees a pies win!

another knob dad !!

was 3yo, i was begging for a jumper in an essendon family, but he wouldnt buy me one. a distant uncle bought me one - a pies jumper with 6 on the back - late 60's - might have been named peter something .

he wouldnt take me to pies games, cos vic park was 'dangerous'. went to windy hill a lot tho - again work that one out ???

so thanks dad for being a knob cos i was pushed the right way :D

Nice Post, even though I never had anything to do with my father.

As a father of 5, I feel it my duty that they all grow up following the Pies.

I have negotiated this with the missus who is sadly a Blues supporter.

She gets the final word on the unimportant stuff like their education etc. :D
