There is another option that Fev is in no fit state to play football for the foreseeable future and the main issue is he is away from his family. If the Lions figure they will get nothing from Fev except grief for the next couple of years, maybe they figure the kindest thing to do is cut him loose, pay him out and let him go home. Keeping him on the list would mean he still has to do the work, and stay close to the club when he comes out and my not recover from the depression.
No doubt they probably want to cut their losses but in a way that might benefit Fev as well. He still gets paid but gets the time he needs to get himself right without worrying about income for the next two years.
Lions have to pay him but can move forward without the distraction, and elevate a rookie. Fev gets paid and takes time to get himself completely right. If he plays again next year, then the Lions only have to pay him the difference between the two contracts I believe.
