There is another option that Fev is in no fit state to play football for the foreseeable future and the main issue is he is away from his family. If the Lions figure they will get nothing from Fev except grief for the next couple of years, maybe they figure the kindest thing to do is cut him loose, pay him out and let him go home. Keeping him on the list would mean he still has to do the work, and stay close to the club when he comes out and my not recover from the depression.

No doubt they probably want to cut their losses but in a way that might benefit Fev as well. He still gets paid but gets the time he needs to get himself right without worrying about income for the next two years.

Lions have to pay him but can move forward without the distraction, and elevate a rookie. Fev gets paid and takes time to get himself completely right. If he plays again next year, then the Lions only have to pay him the difference between the two contracts I believe.

Would seem to be good option for all. IMO he will always be at risk away from Melbourne & his Kids. Let him go home to family - maybe play in the VFL with, as you say, the Lions making up the difference.

Not really, keeping him on the list is pretty meaningless. Voss was on our list for a year after he retired because of salary cap restrictions, Aker had six months on our list after he was fired, Alex Keath is still on the GC list even though he's playing cricket, and none of those were training or present with the club. I suspect Proud is still on our list. Keeping him on the list is basically just an administrative issue - it only becomes meaningful when we start talking about next year because it impacts on our ability to potentially trade him or whether or not we need to include all his salary in this year's cap or not.

I have to say that i'm still abit disappointed, certainly fev climbed to the ledge himself however it was bingle, max and the media (HS) in general that pushed him over.

Just waiting for the "I told ya So" from the general masses that enjoy the bloodletting when infact it's lamentable day for the club, players and supporters.
